good find ilan!!! i am going to order that. the price is better than the best aftermarket price i could find, and it's OEM... where do the OEM switches go? don't the korean/canadian market elantras have a different center console with places for the switches?

oh, and i doubt the sensors will be a problem. the heating pad will probably not interfere with the pressure put on the sensors.

I think the switch goes on the panel by the interior dimmer switch (on the 01-03). I could be wrong though.

hyunelan, i can see the driver's seat switch going next to the dimmer (quite nicely in fact, since there are those bazillion blank switch plates there, lol), but the passenger's as well??? that wouldn't seem logical to have to ask the driver to turn the seat heater off!

Very nice! I'm going to wait for you guys to install it first before I try it though. It'd be nice to fill in some of those blank switches over there. I Just emailed and asked about the hands-free kit/coinholder thingie that goes around the lip of the cubbyhole under the ashtray. *crosses fingers* All this stuff, just in time for christmas :)

leviathant, isn't that where the canadian OEM seat heater switches also go??? also hooking up an OEM hands-free is not that easy. it has to integrate into the audio system, which our OEM stereo can't do.

the switches will go here

ilan, that picture illustrates exactly my point. the US elantras don't have that console section to hold the switches, unless that console part comes with the OEM kit.

or we can get them ;)
I already contacted them about it :D

Frankly, I don't care about hooking up the hands-free, I just want the lip. Sometimes I stack my CDs too high, and on turns they slip out of that spot and land right under my feet. Not cool.

The dimmer switch blanks are mostly filled by handsfree stuff.

Here is a closeup of the handsfree plugin and the button next to it:
http://www.elantraxd.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=737

In Russia, rather than a handsfree thing, they have coin holders, and there's a button in the middle of the coin holders. I'll attach that image, because the remote link (http://www.autocentre.ua/ac/03/46/images/222/222-5.jpg) is really slow. I sent an email asking about the coin-holder/whatever lip, if I hear anything back I'll post about it.

Pretty cool. Wonder what they would cost to get installed?

southpawboston
12-15-2004, 02:13 PM
the cost should basically be the cost of removing the front seat upholstery and reinstalling it, then just running some wiring. i would bring the car to an auto upholstery shop to make sure the seat fabric gets taken off and put back on correctly. i would imagine it's easy to mess it up.

There have been some discussions about removing the cloth that came up earlier this week I thought. The most annoying thing was the set of rings on the back of the seat or something. I'm prepared for a DIY, as long as everything fits correctly.

I saw these yesterday when I was looking at the chrome tweeter things. The only thing I don't like is the way the element itself is set up. It doesn't look like they are of the same quality as those ones I posted about a while back. Definately interesting though, can't wait to see someone else get on it and make a DIY.

Did anyone find anything else out I spoke with my service department and they said it would be a learning experment for them but they will be glad to install it. I also e-mailed the website before i saw this post asking if the US version elantra's have the right wireing harness available in the car so it would be like plug and play.

i don't think the wiring harness is there in the car. it will have to be wired. definitely not plug-n-play. but it's an easy two-wire hookup. just needs 12V (and lots of it, haha).

that's still a great deal, considering it includes the OEM switches and console tray. i am going to have to order this set soon. i need to check with an upholstery shop first to see how much they will charge to install them (i'll do the wiring part/switches myself). i don't trust the dealership to remove and reinstall the leather. i'd rather leave that to an upholstery shop.

I think this is an awsome mod, but here in Vegas, there just isnt much need for heat lol

southpawboston
12-24-2004, 06:43 PM
haha, i suppose you're right 2bits. here in the northeast, getting into a frigid car is hellish. i can't wait to do this mod, since i already have the remote start. i can leave the seat heaters on so that when i remote start they'll get the seats all toasty by the time i get in to the car...

I wouldn't mind a hot *** seat in my car. With my back having stainless steel rods holding my spine straight, it gets mighty cold in winter weather; and that hurts like hell.

You will not be able to have the seats hot for when you get into the car. Mine do not come on unless the switch is on AND there is someone sitting in the seat. They must have a pressure switch as well.
That is how the OEM ones work anyway. :D

what if you left something on your seat. say a box of telephone books or something
just an idea

that should be pretty easy to circumvent with a DIY installation...

I was talking through my **s when I said that there had to be someone in the seats for the heat to come on. :hand: That is wrong. It takes about 10-15 mins to notice any heat coming from the seat.
Using a remote starter, the seats should be warm when you get in. :D

SPB, you will get a chance to re-install your iPod base with the new console. Think you might mount it lower so you just have a slot in the bottom of the console with the base mounted flush underneath? Someone here did that and it looks really clean. You could even turn the cutout into a 'cap' of sorts so you can cover it when the iPod isn't in there!

southpawboston
01-16-2005, 08:42 PM
yep roy, i saw that guy's ipod dock installation and liked it!!! so yes, if i get the new console insert with the heater pads and switches, i will definitely so something along those lines.

the only drawback (and this is apple's fault) is that the dock housing is white. you can try painting it black, but the way it's designed is to hold the ipod in by friction. there's no latch that clicks it into place. so after awhile, any paint job is going to get scuffed and the white is going to show. so i'll probably just leave it white.

i like your idea of a cover. [as the gears mesh in SPB's head] in fact, the rubber layer in that console insert is removable, it's only held down in four places by little nubs that pop through the plastic below it. you could leave the rubber piece uncut, and just roll it back to slip the ipod in. then with the ipod out, the rubber just lays flat and there's no cutout... hmm... looks like i'm going to have to get those seat heaters sooner rather than later...

alas...new baby, new job = no mods for SPB until next vacation... :(

How much are the heating units?

southpawboston

if i remember correctly, it was $165 for the OEM pads, switches, and console insert (which is molded to accomodate the switches). grear price.

I found a pic of the 04 console kit, I don't know the direct link for the pic but it is in there http://www.bobaedream.co.kr/cyber/CyberCarView.php?cat=&gubun=KoreaCar&number=35999 I see where the heated seat switches go, I want that hands free kit also, I wonder what the other blank switch is used for?
