Well, since the wife and I have a little one on the way now, bigger things like rims / tires and such will have to be put on hold. I did sweet talk to the wife into a muffler for Christmas.

I ordered a Hooker Aerochamber (see pic). It is a reflection muffler that's sound will not change over time since there is no fiberglass to breakdown / burn up. I got an offset / offset in 2¼ size from Summit Racing for about $68 shipped. It is supposed to be here today, and I do not want to leave the house in case it comes, lol. Hopefully, if it gets here early enough, I can get it installed today. I am going to lose the resonator too at first and see how that goes. Supposably, they have a nice deep tone and are not loud at all - which is what I am going for.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Update: Muffler came yesterday, and I rushed to get it installed. They were busy and the hour I was told it would take ended up more like 2 hours. Well, when they dropped it down, and started it up, I was quite impressed w/ the sound. Really deep, not ricey, or fart can sounding and not really loud. However, there is a reverb / drone sound on the inside, whereas it does not seem that loud outside. On the way home, I hit a decent size bump, and heard a clang. I was really ticked off. I am trying to decide now if I get a resonator installed when I take it back to get the problem fixed, or if I go back to stock. Only problem is, they do not have my stock stuff anymore because the scrap metal people came early....either way, I am going to be out some cash. Looks like my OT money will be used up correcting this mess. I took some video with my digital camera at my inlaws tonight and hope the sound comes through good, but it will be a while before I get back home to upload it. Does anyone think a resonator will solve this drone / reverb sound or am I going to have to try something else?

More pics & clip 12/18: Ok, here is the short clip. Sorry it is so dark. When I converted the movie from high quality avi to wmv, it got a lot darker. Anyway, I am sure you can still make out the ugly taillight....lol.

listen here.. ( no punn intended )

the drone sound is typical of ANY aftermarket system.

If you want power you have to sacrifice some granny luxury.

I know there would be trade offs, but do you think a resonator would help, yet not hurt performance too much? I just want it a little quieter in the cabin. I am pretty pleased with the outside sound. The guys at the muffler shop messed with my seat, so I have been mostly occupied with trying to get it "just right" again, and with them not giving enough clearing over the control arms (the clang).

I reset the ECU, and did not really notice much difference until later tonight (after the seat issue was corrected). At first, I almost felt like I lost some low end, but on occasion, it seems like it is pulling harder from say 2200 up - maybe after it is warmed up?

As always Ford, thanks for your input.

u are worried about the seat and your muffler is making " clanking " noises ?

Dude, take it back, have them make it all over again. There must be absolutely NO clanking sounds coming from the exhaust !

That is unacceptable.

Mind you, This advice is coming from a guy who re-made his XD exhaust 3 times so far. And he finally got it right. LOL

:phone: Yeah, I got them on the horn today before I left to go see my inlaws and let them know of my displeasure. However, going back was not an option at the current time. I told them I was coming back first thing Monday. Its not like there is a constant clang. But if I hit a deep enough pothole, or enough of an incline in the road that would make the suspension travel quite a bit, it will do it.

As far as the seat thing - I hurt my back a few weeks back, and if the seat is not perfect, it really bothers me...... :fiddle:

u are worried about the seat and your muffler is making " clanking " noises ? I think ***-comfort comes before some "clanking noise in the muffler". I mean come on man...LOL

Update:

Well, I went back down and had them redo it. The same guy was there, and I do not fault him too much. He was working in the dark outside on the lift the other night to finish up. He redid the back end, added another hanger and put a clamp on as well. There is no minor rattling sound now, and no clangs I have heard thus far.

Now, for the noise issue. I went ahead and forked over some more cash and had them install a resonator while I was there. The outside sound changed very little (not that it was that loud in the first place) - maybe a little dampened. The inside was my concern. I got in, and to my surprise, it was almost back to stock, with very little if any drone. I was so pumped. On the drive home, the butt dyno felt some improvement as well.

This is what I wanted from the beginning, it just took a little longer to get there. Added a couple new pics to the original thread. I like the near stock look.

Sounds good but I hate the way our engines sound, that whine in the background and the way the engine revs seem to hang forever.

...I hate the way our engines sound, that whine in the background and the way the engine revs seem to hang forever.

Thanks for the compliment. Yeah, not much of a fan of it either. Maybe that can be remedied with a supercharger in the future....lol. Ford's experiment will play a large role there.

I am glad I had the resonator put in. I gave up a little sound on the outside for a big reduction inside (clip prior to install). It would have cost me over $400 to just buy the stock parts back through Knox, had I decided to go that route.

the evo exhaust sounds so much better....good luck with it though....did you get pipes made or just the muffler?

the evo exhaust sounds so much better....

Maybe so. I have exactly what I want now: A deep mellow tone that is not annoying or obtrusive, yet still yields a performance boost. I also like the fact that it can be heard, but not necessarily seen. A direct bolt up mandrel bent system would have been great, but those big cannister style mufflers make me wanna  . To each his own.

...did you get pipes made or just the muffler?

I have 2¼ crush bent pipe w/ a resonator going into the aerochamber.
