I have a 2005 GT and this morning (-20 degree F) when I strated the car, I let it run for about 3 minutes. Then after driving for a while the temp gauge went up to the normail postition. I turned the heat on, all the way to the high setting. But it kept blowing ice cold air, nothing but ice cold air.

I'm suppose to go to my in-laws house with my family in just a few hours and the Hyundai Service is closed. What do I do guys?? Please help!!

You can send me email to: emailATbengalsbayDOTcom Please HELP!!

First, check all fuses. make sure they are good.
If not that that, it is probably the dial not changing the vent over to heat. Try changing first the area (ie floor, defrost, both) then try to turn it to cold then hot and listen if the vents change sound. If they do, you should be good. If not the knob is probably bad. In this case pull the handle off, use some needle nose to change it from cold to hot. Also try these things with and without the A/C button. Also with that cold, let the car run a bit....

Hope this helps and fixes it....Merry Christmas.

spextar, there are only two possible reasons for this problem:

1) the heater core is not getting hot engine coolant flowing through it (not likely)

2) the heater control flap is not opening (more likely)

the heater control flap is a flap that is electrically activated and opens the flow of air over the heater core. the temperature dial on the HVAC cluster electrically controls the position of the flap (the degree to which the flap opens). my personal bet is that either the flap is stuck or the electric actuator is not working.

get it to the dealer first thing on monday...sorry you have to drive it with ice-cold air. that really sucks.

where are all the fuses? Any particular one I need to change? The knob seems to work okay.

(#2)That was the principal I was working off as well. Southpaw confirmed it.

Checking the fuses and turning that dial to listen for the change should help it release. Also try recirc, no recirc air.

And I diito Southpaw, time for a trip to the dealer...come monday

Left side, by the dumb pedal. Right under the hood release lever. There is a door on the side. Fuse panel ids there

I just went outside and listened very carefully and heard motorized sound at every notch up/down of the temp knob, also, all other buttons/knobs seems to work. Do you think the flap might still be stuck even if I hear the movement when turning the dial?

I would drive it around for about 15min in the neighborhood and see if it helps. Temp guage (thermometer in the water neck) could just not have opened up yet. Try that and post again I would say. How long to get this fixed? (till you leave?)

Dayum...where'd you go? Did it work? at least let us know....

I just came back from the dealer.. update coming in the next post..

after you guys asked me to, I checked the motor movement and it seemed fine. I called the dealer and unfortunately the service dept was closed but the sales manager offered me a Buick Regal for the weekend until they can take a look at it.

I ran the car for a little bit and it seemed like if I put the knob at the coldest, it seems to blow colder air than it does in the hottest setting. I knew something started to working.

Now the only problem is, the temp gauge won't rise very high, usually it's past half line. Now it's only a little above 'C'. But once in a while it will go up and air comes out a little hotter and then it goes back down again.

I have 2 child seats in my car and didn't want to install these in the Buick they offered me. I told the manager that I would run the car for a bit and see it improves the situation. He suggested that I put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator to block the (-20/25 cold air) and just watch the gauge.

What do you guys say? I have about an hour to say yes/no to the Buick..

Go for the reliable car if he's offering. He did not have to. He is just speading "Christmas cheer". Take the buick until the Hyundai is fixed and have a Merry Christmas! Don't forget to tell that guy thanks for the hookup.

Merry Christmas.

the cardboard idea is an old trick that may work, IF the problem is a faulty thermostat that is not closing properly (allowing too much flow through the radiator). but that is also potentially dangerous, because if the cardboard is blocking the flow of air to the radiator, you run the slight risk of overheating the engine. it is open to debate whether hyundai would honor THAT damage...

Thanks guys for the input. My wife thinks it's too much hassle to move the car seats back and forth. Besides it seems to be heating a little better now. Also, her main concern is that the infant seat was installed and verified, so she doesn't want to remove it. I guess I will have to try my luck. The place we are going is 3 hrs south of here and it's usually warmer than here. Please wish me good luck. Merry Christmas to all of you guys!!

I am not going to use the card board trick.

Hey guys!
Just came back from the Xmas trip and I thought it'd be nice to give you an update.
Throughout the trip, I didn't have any problem at all. In fact, the heat was too hot at the hottest setting, so I had to trun in down a few notches.
One thing that I noticed, the car takes a little longer to get warm than most other cars I have owned.
Thanks for your posts again and happy new year!!
