This will be updated in the future, but here are the basics:

Installing Tiburon Seats in an Elantra XD-chassis

Remove the Elantra Seats:

1. Remove the four bolts that hold the Elantra seats from car chassis.
2. Unplug the three wiring harnesses per seat from the Elantra seats.
3. Remove the Elantra seats from the car.

Remove / Prep the Elantra slide rails to install on the Tiburon seats:

1. Remove the seatbelt latch assembly from the Elantra seats.
2. Remove the three nuts on each seat slide on the bottom of the Elantra seats and remove the slide-rail assembly (the two rails and the slide handle).
3. Slot the chassis bolt holes ~1/2" wider towards the outside of the frame rails.
4. Cut off the alignment pin near the chassis-side and front of each slide rail (one on each rail).

Tiburon Seat Prep:

1. Remove the seatbelt latch from the Tiburon seats (and the slide rails if still attached).
2. Install the Elantra seat belt latch onto the Tiburon seats.
3. Mount the slide rails to the bottom of the Tiburon seats using the same nuts that you took off to remove the rails from the Elantra seats.

Put the Tiburon seats in the Elantra:

1. Carefully place the Tiburon seats in the Elantra.
2. Plug in the wiring harnesses
3. On the passenger side, use a 4.7K-ohm resistor to connect the two contacts on the extra Elantra chassis wiring harness (this will make the car think the passenger seat is occupied even when there's no one in the seat).
4. Bolt the seats to the floor using the Elantra's seat bolts.

Make sure all nuts and bolts are tight. You don't want the seats coming unbolted in the event of an accident!

PM me if you do this mod and have any questions. I'll try to upgrade this with pictures of the seat rails and how you slot them later.

Hey, I got your email, but it was all confusing for me. I'm just going to use this DIY to make the DIY page, it'll be easier for me. We definitely needs pics though. Keep up the good work.

Lets try to avoid accident all together, its better that way. Nice write up though.

Didn't you have problems with the side airbag connections?

kylemorg

Nope -- no problems with the airbag hookup if you use the Elantra seatbelt latches, those plugs work fine. The airbag trigger harnesses on the Tib seats are identical to the Elantra.

The passenger occupancy detecter is the only Elantra harness that doesn't match up to the Tib seats. What you need to do is go to radio shack and get a pack of 4.7k-ohm resistors ($0.99) and use one to short across the Elantra passenger side seat occupancy detector harness. That will set the Passenger side airbag to deploy in the event of an accident, and will make the airbag warning light on the instrument cluster go off.

This mod only takes ~2.5 hours per seat with short smoke breaks and such. It's pretty easy; I'd say a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10. Further, it's only a 6 'cause you need to cut metal and 'cause it's a pain to get the nuts off of the Elantra seats and put them back on to put the Elantra rails on the Tibby seats.

You will need safety glasses, 14 and 10mm socket wrenches, a 10mm combination wrench, phillips screwdriver, rotary tool with reinforced cutting wheels and vice grip pliers. Recommended extra tools are a jig saw, socket extension bars, diagonal cutters (to cut wire ties), extra wire ties, and adhesive bandages (if you're sometimes clumsy like me).

Man... I was looking at this and really thinking of doing it. but the one thing that holds me back is the fact that the seats are black. I prefer a black interior but it would take a LOT of work to make everything else black in the car.... so... I dig the tib seats but I'm not sure I like the black on grey... when you're in the car or getting in and out of the car do you notice it much?

I think maybe if the center console were black it might be better... it would be easy to make the center consold black... hmmmm...

Actually, the black leather goes very nicely with the black part of the dash and the doors. You don't notice the color difference much at all through the windows (since they're tinted) against the dark gray leather in the 02 XD GT.

I agree, if you could make the center console black it'd look even better, or at least if you made the pad on the top of the console and the vinyl-leather inserts on the front doors black to match.

maybe it can be one of those "down the line" projects... they do look goooood though.. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but since I have an '05 GT, I won't be needing the resistor for the passenger air bag since mine is already set up to read if someone is there or not. Right?

And is black really the only color these seats come in??

Not sure about the resistor but I do think these seats come in a 2-tone option. You could always check hyundais web site for factory options. Or call all hyundaiisuzu.com and see if they have some seats. That would be MUCH cheaper than buying from a stealer.

you would need to put the resistor for the 05.

it will help you even, it will always think someone is there, so you wont have that light on all the time.

Be careful -- I believe that the airbag modules for the 2005 XD are different than the ones for the 2001-2003 XD. I know the Tib module plugged right up to the XD1 harness, but I'm not sure about the XD2.

There's no passenger occupancy sensor in the Tib seats, so you either need to use a resistor or transplant the sensor -- I beleve both the XD1 and XD2's have the sensor in the passenger seat.

So you just left the rear seats stock?? I like the Tib seats but if you can't change the rears then I think it doesn't look right.. Good work though BTW

Well, I guess this option is out.

My daughter likes to ride up front, and when she sits in the seat, it turns off the airbag for her safety. If I would have to wire it to be on all the time, then she wouldn't be able to ride up front. As infrequently as I see her, I don't want to disappoint her in that regard. She loves cars, loves being able to see, and she loves going to the track with me, so I guess the seats are out.

As far as the color, I think the black looks great in the interior, like a racing bucket seat you'd get from APC or SPARCO or something, in which your present interior would never look the same as them. I really just wanted gray, only because black leather gets way too hot.

All right, well thanks for the information...

what about the seats themselves...so they are actually not as wide as the XD seats? how do they feel in the car...do you seat any lower...or not because you use the brackets? how about the twisties?? i'm assuming the bolstering keeps you where you need to be....and they have the lumber support too right??

kylemorg
10-10-2005, 07:34 PM
The seat itself is about as wide as the XD ones, but the brackets are about 1/2" closer together. You sit a bit lower (1-2") and they hold you in much nicer in the turns and your arm's angle to the armrest and the shifter is better. Yes, they have an adjustable lumbar support on the driver's side, but only a single tilt adjust on the bottom cushion of the driver's seat.

If you'd like to get a closer look / feel, sit in a Tib at the dealer and see how you like the seats.

Personally I don't mind the color difference between the front black seats and the rear gray ones.

shadow5606
11-20-2005, 10:33 AM
brand new would be PRICEY... :( hello dealer, let me bend over please... lol I'd call allhyundaiisuzu.com... but that's just me being a cheapo! :)

Yeah no kidding right Cliff? OUCH.

Could check around the junkyards too. The back seats wouldn't fit would they? Also, did the Tib's come in cloth or just leather?

Looks GREAT though. I remember drooling over the Tib the entire time I was in the dealership buying my car. I was just lusting over those seats like nothing else. Loved the driving position in the Tib :).

Some seats do come in cloth. Your best bet IMO would be to check NewTiburon.com. There was guy on there just selling his two front black cloth seats for $300.

Or check eBay, LKQ has a bunch of Elantra seats up for sale, I'm sure they might have some Tiburon seats every once and a while too.

thx anny thought?

also if someone in canada has some in their garage or near them pm me :). here their's a guy that is selling his, but at a not reasonable price ( 330 each    ) leather, good condition.

its a bit too much, but it's would probly cost this much also to have some us seats to my house so i'm thinking about it :(

I'am not rying to jack a thread. I was at a hyundai dealer down here at Shrewsbury, NJ, ordering some parking brake cables for my rear disc project. I was eyeing a hot red tibby. The damn thing had painted front calipers with "hyundai" casted into. And that was factory. Man those would look good on my car....I originally wanted to get a tibby,b ut when I sat in the thing, my head was scrapping the headliner. I wish I got that tibby..
