View Full Version : Wrath of the Volvo

Also titled, "Monkey in the Middle."

You know that point at which your car becomes unweighted and the center of gravity is transferring itself back to the middle of the car. Yea, the thing that happens when you've just come to a stop? Well, at that instant a volvo S70 (tankish car) eats me so hard, that she doesn't just bounce me, she rams me into the jeep in front of me! Actually, launches me 3/4th's a car length into this monster, and squishes me up! I got gang banged!

The front actually took more damage than the rear (I think.) In the rear it appears the bumpers and underneathness are screwed, as well as the tow hook as it is at a funny angle and shifted sideways (along with whatever it is welded to.) The front of my car is a different story. The radiator was torn away from its mounting and sliced through my heat shield, past the headers and embedded into the engine. A pulley is sitting crooked; my strut towers are actually warped inwards towards the car and it appears the motor mounts may have been pushed around a bit. Oi! Not only that, my airbags FAILED TO DEPLOY. This would be the second time around. I filed a claim with Hyundai. I actually struck my head against the steering wheel. What kind of *** crap are they putting in these cars?

I'm glad you are ok...

one thing, airbags dont open unless you are moving at a certain speed ... i think... lol

That sucks. Sounds like the car is done for. Faulty Airbags... in a Hyundai... noooo. (sorry to make jokes of this terrrible situation). Didn't we previously learn the car has to be moving at X miles per hour for airbags to have the option of deploying?

Sorry to hear about this... without pictures and just descriptions, I vote totaled.

That might be the first time I've used that icon........

(if you have any...it's hard to tell the extreme damage to the car, although it does sound pretty bad.)

Not sure of the laws in Texas, but in Ontario, weither you were stopped or not, you're responsible for hitting the person in front of you. So when I see you said you were launched 3/4's car length, the cops will say you were too close. I always stay back at a light until a few cars get behind me, then i'll move up.

But sorry to hear about your troubles. Would like to see pictures though.

It's interesting, the laws in Texas are very similar. However, the officer did not cite me for being too close, only cited the driver of the volvo for failure to abate speed. I think physics won out on this one. That volvo was a tank, and by how hard she hit me and by how hard she squished me, if I would not have been there she would have eaten the jeep. I will get pics up asap. We went and took some yesterday of the car. :( She bent my muffler down, too.

That's good news to hear. So her insurance we'll pay for both vehicles? Also from what you said, sounds like it'll be written off.

In Illinois, if it's a chain reaction and they can tell that the car in the rear hit the car in the middle, before the middle car hit the one in front of it - the car in the end is responsible for all collisions ahead of it. When I was in high school I knew a girl who caused a chain-reaction crash. She was ultimately responsible for paying for 4 cars' repairs, even though she only hit one.

Precisely what I think will happen. That happened a few years ago to my bro-in-law, he was rear ended or something with 4 cars involved.....the last one to hit paid for all 4 cars.

Glad to hear you're OK...

Here's hoping you get enough out of the insurance to pay your's off and have a down payment on another car.....

I am pretty confident that Geiko will end up doing both cars. The claims guy said something about he didn't know if they were gonna have to pay for the front end of the vehicle (mine.) Those are lawsuit words there. However, I don't believe they will have any reason not to. Like I said before about the physics thing, if I hadn't of been there the jeep would have gotten it. If Geiko gives me ****, I will pull out the lawyer. I don't think it will come to that though. Everyone is human. She hit me, whoopie. Her insurance pays for mine and the jeep and everyone is happy. If Geiko decides to get stupid, that's another story altogether.

I know you said last night that your back and neck was hurting, you should get that checked out as well. It was good to hear that you were okay (mostly).

I find out today if it totaled. The insurance company is covering both cars, so big relief there. I got my back checked out; apparently I pulled a few muscles in me back and they gave me wonderful drugs. Woot! :( Poor Seabiscuit.

So, are you hoping it's totaled or not. Some people would rather have their car repaired, others want to move on.

Did they hook you up with a rental yet?

I recieved a rental the very same day as the accident. Apparently the adjustor has already been there and looked at everything, just waiting on the word.

I am kind of torn between the two. I love the car, though I am 5000 upside down on it. :( Honestly, I do hope they total it. If for no other reason than to get me out of this horrible debt.

That, and with the airbags not going off twice in a row, I can't help be feel uncomfortable about driving the car. We will see though. If they do total it I am leaning towards a truck or small SUV. Perhaps the Tuscon? :) Never know.

Peace out, and thanks to everyone for their support.

Keep us informed. The only thing I can add to what you said is that the Tucson is small and expensive (relative), and in its first year of production. You could just about steal a Santa Fe that has a little more room, for less than the Tucson is going for.

Damn, I didn't read this thread til now. Sorry to hear about that David, that sucks.

I'm one of the "I hope it's totaled" people, getting a new car is usually pretty exciting, no matter how much you liked your previous one. I agree with Mike, right now you can get Santa Fes for REALLY cheap, look into it.

same thing happened to me once. i was the 3rd car in a 5 car pile up. car #4 rammed me right into car #2...after i came to a stop behind car#2. car #4 was deemed responsible for car #3 (me) and car #2.

how did they determine this? car #2 claimed they only felt one impact. if they had felt two, it would have been interpreted as me hitting car #2 first, then car #4 hitting me, causing car #2 two impacts. clever...

I was lead car in a four car crack up. The third car had to foot the bill for both the cars in front of it and it's front end. The first car (me) and the second car were stopped (I was turning off the highway) the third car braked hard hitting the second car, which was forced into mine. The third car stopped so quick that the rear end jacked up in the air. The fourth car, who was also breaking hard and had it's nose to the ground went underneath the third car. The third car sat down on the fourth car's hood. The fourth car, I believe, ended up paying for damage to the rear of the third car and the front of it's own.

I am happy to say I will not be leaving your great presence.

I am sad to say I will not be getting out of my gigantic debt.

;) Daddy's back.

Wow..... what did they estimate the dollar amount of damage was? It sure sounded like there was a lot of damage to the car...
