man...i hate taxes...ive made about 9k (claimed) this year, paid 800 to federal thru the year, and when i just did the 1040ez form, it came that i will probably be getting back 400...guess i jest need to make right around that 4850 mark from the exemption credit and pay almost no taxes and get everything back...oh well, i guess everyone has to do it...this is like, one part of the year that i like, but i hate, caus i know im getting money back, but its never what i thought it would be

actually for 2004 it's somewhere around $7500 mark (single no dependants) to get all your money back...that's not using any tricky deductions and filing 1040EZ...unless i'm just stupid and don't know what i'm talking about.
EDIT: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040ez.pdf line 5 looks like standard deduction for single filer for 2004 is $7950. if anybody knows about accounting more than i do please correct this. this is though how i filed my return for 2004 and am getting around $300 back

my parents claim me as a dependent (sp) on their form, seeing how i live w/ them, and they pay for my living expenses...so mine is 4850

I'm going to about break even this year.... I was kinda expecting a big return, but I suppose I just need to realize that now that I have a real job (well, had) I'm not going to be getting those big returns anymore.... At least I don't have to pay like I did the last couple years....

yeah my wife and I owed 1500 last year. that sucked bigtime... she had accidentally claimed too much on her tax forms so her company wasn't witholding enough.

Feel lucky... my wife and I are getting $64.00. Yep, a whole sixty-four dollars. I guess that indicates we are getting close to all we can out of our paychecks without paying the gov't at the end of the year, but a nice big refund would be nice for once.

You should feel lucky Evan my man, I had more taken out of one paycheck than you had taken all year! And I'm not getting no 50% back either, God I love being middle-class, NOT!

If you think filling out a 1040EZ form and getting $300 back sucks, try filling out a Schedule C and owing two and a half grand! I'm glad I'm working a job where I get plain old W2s again. I hope to someday fill out a 1040EZ again, but I fear those days are long gone.

I don't really know why some of you guys are complaining about not receiving a big refund. I am happy if I receive a little back from the gov'tor if I owe a little back. If you get a big refund on your taxes and you're filing 1040EZ, then you're letting Uncle Sam borrow your own money interest free. Now that's getting shafted. Every year I like to break even when it comes to taxes. Also, if your company has a 401k plan, PLEASE use it to your advantage. Not only is it usually free money (company match), but it will also put you into a lower tax bracket.

Well, my brother is going to do mine this weekend (he just uses Turbo Tax, which although I haven't had any problems, many people said they don't get the biggest refund possible with it). I hadn't been really making a lot of money since I was in school, so I didn't have that much in taxes taken out either, so we'll see what happens. As long as I don't have to pay money like I had to when I was an "independent contractor" at my job I'll be happy.

Probably earned income credit. I claim 0 on my taxes and I get back about 900 back. I do pay megabucks in taxes because I own a shop plus my teaching job puts me in a bracket that requires me to pay alot.

Just thought I'd point out that you can file your taxes online for free. There are some restrictions, but I think for most singles it's completely free for federal taxes. You still have to pay to e-file your state taxes if you want (depending on your state of course).
It's quick and easy, I filled mine you in about an hour or so....
The IRS link to get started is HERE! (http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html)

I'll know what I'm looking at tonight when I do my taxes but I know that ever since I got married my tax situation sucks.... they talk about wanting to encourage marriage but you get penalized for it financially. :(

well, if you're in a two income marriage you're more than likely pushed into a higher tax bracket and loose much more of your money than you would if each of you were single and earning the same income.

Since my wife and I both make decent money we get the crap taxed out of us.

I believe that even if you're married, you can still file seperately.
shadow5606
01-29-2005, 03:02 AM
you can file seperately but the same married tax laws applies. so the total combined income determines the overall bracket... when you file seperately some things change but it's pretty small. when you do your returns online most placed will have a button to click to see what the results are filing seperately vs jointly (tax people at h&r block/jackson hewitt, etc can do the same thing to give you a comparison) either way you still get screwed if you're a 2 significant income family.
if one of us didn't work or just didn't work enough to make much money it wouldn't throw us off much but the cutoff is right aournd 59K so if between the two of us we're pushed over 59K then we're both taxed as if we made 59K... :(
I'm planing on filing this weekend so we'll see where the dice land...
