Old thread was a bit...old...so I didn't want to bring it back to life, however had a thought on this...
As many of us know, a lot of newer cars will automatically lock the doors for you upon shifting into Drive. For me, that isn't a huge issue since it's something I do in a order when getting in my car... In the old thread people were trying to come up with ideas on how to do it, I think I may have figured an idea out if anyone is intrested...
Automatic Only - Somehow wire a link between the little Green "O" on the Dash Cluster that moves when you shift gears so that it triggers the door locks upon shifting into the "D" indicator position... Can't get much more technical than this, but assuming it would work I bet it would be a helluva lot easier to wire than tapping into the speed sensor...

if there is a signal generated by the auto shift that comes on only when in park OR when in anything other than park, then that can be hooked into a pulse timer relay to trigger your door locks. it's actually quite easy once we can establish a signal from the tranny. i tried looking long ago into the possiblility of tapping into the PRND2L lights on the dash, but they're part of a circuit board, that would not be easy.

On my car, I don't have the separate lights. It is a digital readout and at the shifter, it has a single light with a transparent red dot on a small panel that is attached to the gearshift.

True, I had forgotten that GT's don't have Shift Indicators on the Dash, just the LCD Block. :P Wonder why no one has done a guage face remake of the stock GTs' for the GLSs'... Ok, totally different topic there...
Anyway, thanks for that info SPB, scuttle that concept...wonder why Hyundai hasn't added it stock yet.

Yea, I talked to SPB a while back about it. I was looking into getting a FSM for an '04, but never got around to it. It sure is a nice feature. I wish Hyundai had it.

I dont know if this has been mentioned on the older thread...
but how about if a reed swich is mounted to the automatic gear lever under the top panel.
so when its in park it opens the circut in the reed swich and when it is out
of park away from the reed swich it creates a closed circut sending ground
or +12v to a door locking relay or controll box. (nc - reed swich)
This could also be configured to unlock the doors when the shift is put back
in the park position.
just incase if ppl dont know what a reed swich is....
they use them on doors in a house security system.
they come in 2 parts, one a magnet and the other has 2 wires in it that
connect when there is a magnetic field present and disconnect when
the magnetic field is not there. (no - reed swich)
there are 2 types normaly open (no) ans normalu closed (nc)
the above description is a normaly open (no) reed swich, normaly closed
(nc) reed swiches are the opposite
uhm why not just wire the **** to lock your doors when the key is turned to acc, that would be a hell of a lot easier than trying to mess around with shifter...
shawn :)

that is an EXCELLENT idea. reed switches are also used in laptops, to signal the laptop to go to sleep when you close the clamshell.
how much do they cost? i'll bet they're not much. in fact that would be a really easy install. i believe you would need a NC switch. one wire to ground, the other to the door lock input pin on the ETACS... and voila!
it's genious, dude.

the only issue i can see with that is that if you later shift down past D, what happens when you bring it back to D... will they unlock.... as long as there are separate lock and unlock circuits, it shouldn't...
then, using another you could set it so that they unlock when you shift it into P.... just make the magnet the part that move......
hope you can find the switches small enough......
I may know where you can find tiny ones...... but you'd have to buy some laptop parts to get them... about $10 a piece last time I checked......

i'll bet radio shack has reed switches...

If I am understanding this right, the switch would sense being out of park, not any other gear selection, so shifts between R all the way to 1 and back would have no impact. Only thing is, would this be a constant signal to lock the door, so that say I stopped to pick someone up and kept it in gear, it would not unlock at all unless it was put into park, or could a pulse timer be used for this?
I am not so concerned with it unlocking when put into park as I am about it locking when put into gear.

What about something that reads the Tach? Once it goes above say 2500 then the doors lock, I think the engine usually revs to about 1500 or so when the car starts...i'll have to pay attention next time I crank it up.
