View Full Version : How can I make some extra $$
Like the title says I need to make some extra cash. The wedding bills are starting to make life really dull and I'm not sure how many more ramen noodles I can eat. So does anyone have any suggestions on how to earn a couple grand between now and the end of August? I'm looking at a 2nd job at Bestbuy or CC, but the hard part is I work 9-6 mon-fri and I do need to sleep every now and then. I've thought about looking for a pizza delivery job but I'm not sure I want to be putting alot of miles on my car to earn only a little more. Help a brother out, I need ideas.

best cash solution is to be a server or a bartender. if you get a good set up, you can probably make at least a couple hundred per weekend. you will have to sacrifice your weekends.

hell, you could make 2g in <a couple months deliverin pizzas...2 months = about 6k miles..
i did some figurin up the other day...i make about 22k a year (around that)...12 months = just under 2k a month
lets see...5.15/hr, say 30 hrs a week....about 250/per 2 week check after taxes...500/month + tips
on average, i make about 8-10$/hr in tips... so if you work 30 hrs/wk and average 10$/hr in tips, thats 1200ish a month (unclaimed, if you decide not to claim your tips which = taxfree)
so you could probably make 2g in 2 months, and night time is the best time for tips to deliver pizza...im sure you could find a place and work like 630-12 4 nights a week
30 hours is an awful lot on top of the 40 hour work week I have already. And 6k is alot of miles to put on my car in only 2 months. I've had my car 3 years and only have 38k on it right now. I think I might look into bartending though. I wonder how easy it would be to get a job behind the bar with no experience though.

bartenders do make decent money...my bro is a bartender fri and sat for wedding receptions and make 200-400 a night after splitting it with the other bartender (of course there is usually 700-1,000 people at those receptions......which is not a bad income for a 2nd job 8-10 hours a week......

yea, but its not like its 3k a month, forever....i know how you feel tho...i got mine in nov 03 w. 1,3xx miles, and im coming up on 40k...im about to find out about a job w/ my buddy at some collections agency or somethin...like 12$/hr to call people all day, and comissions (like 3-5$) if you get people to pay over the phone or somethin...
12$/hr isnt too bad at all...especially since im making just a little more than that at my current job, plus im destroyin the car
also, with this other job, no more spending 20$ every 2-3 days at the pump

Well I guess an avearge of $15hr is little money for some, I think pizza delivery is a very profitable job. I make great $$ doing it.

I never realized that you guys could make that much money delivering pizzas. I personally have thought about doing that for a 2nd job, but my problem is that I currently work 12:15 - 9:15 so I don't know if they'd want a driver for those few short hours.
2GTS, why are you so worried about putting miles on your car? It's not like we drive a Ferrari or a classic. Our car has one of the worst depreciation. Most cars are not investments and I think that people who buy their car should use it as much as possible to get the most out of it. The only reason I wouldn't put miles on a car is if I was on a lease and I had a cap on my mileage.
evan938
01-30-2005, 10:20 PM
yeah, same here, but its killin my car, and w/ the turbo about to go in, and me not getting the eclipse runnin for work, im not gonna be able to afford it
i know im gonna run into problems w/ a turbo in the car, and if i can find a job that i dont NEED a car, thats gonna be better...the place im gonna apply to is <2 miles from my house, so i know i can catch a ride if i need to
turbo car + pizza delivery = not gonna happen
and seeing how i have put 39k miles on my car in 15 months, bleh...im done
and my manager is a dick and im sick of his bull****
but if there were company cars and he wasnt there, id stay
I don't have a problem putting some time in for the extra bread. I was just hoping I could get some decent money doing about 20 extra hours on top of my real job. The only reason I'm doing this is to make it easier to pay for my wedding and I need to make sure I'm around enough that we'll still want to marry each other after 6 or 7 months of me working 2 jobs and my fiancee working 40+ hours and going to school full time. I think bartending is probably going to work out best if I don't end up at Bestbuy or Circuit City. My time is worth a good amount to me and I don't think 30 hours of pizza delivery and an extra 3k miles on my car each month is worth it for me. If it makes you happy great but it's not my first choice.
2GTS, why are you so worried about putting miles on your car?
seeing how i have put 39k miles on my car in 15 months, bleh...im done
My car is not an investment but I'd like it to last me a good long time. I'd like it to still be in one piece and enjoyable when it's paid off. Seeing how evan put 39k on in 15 months delivering pizza that car will be worn out much faster than I'd like mine to be. And before you say it, no I can not get a beater to use for pizza delivery. If I could afford a 500-1000 car and ins for it I wouldn't need a 2nd job.

you say you work till 6...say you get to circuit city or best buy @ 630...they close @ what...9? 10 on the weekends? thats not many hours...you might get close to 20 if you work 7 days a week
and for 6-7$/hr...thats not a lot at all

Besides with the $$ you would get you can get a beater and save your car, iwill be getting a beater soon. on top of that you are always on the road with no boss breathing down your neck

Personally, I'd pick the pizza delivery over the Best Buy position. You say your time is worth a lot of money, but then you settle for working at Best Buy? You'll be lucky if they start you off at $8/hr there. I have worked Xmas there about 4 years ago, and my time to them was only worth $7.50/hr, hardly worth anything. At least with the pizza delivery you know you'll get your base pay, and tips that you don't have to claim at the end of the year. I wouldn't even care about the miles on my car, it's a Hyundai.

I think there's money in bartending, but with no experience I highly doubt any place would let you do that. There are actually people going to school to be bartenders. You can still make a lot of money being a waiter. My friend worked at Macaroni Grill part time and when you figure out her base+tip, her hourly was higher than mine. I can't serve food or hold things for **** without breaking things, otherwise I'd consider it. If you don't mind working with a bunch of pretty boys and young chicks, you might wanna try that.

If he doesn't mind gyrating against another dude....which is NOT COOL!!!
No stripping or anything that envolves gyrating against, with of near another dude.
The reasons I'm considering Bestbuy and CC are location. They are spitting distance from my office, infact for Curcuit City I wouldn't even move my car just walk across the street. Also around here, being the Chicago burbs, they start at about $9-10 an hour. 20 hours wouldn't be hard at all to do if I worked 2 8hours shifts on the weekends and one evening(200 before taxes, 160 after, a week will deff help). I know the stores close at 9 but work is done at closing time, theres stuff to be finished up, cleaned and organized after the last customer walks out the door.
If I had the $1500 for a decent beater and the insurance on it I wouldn't need the 2nd job and at this point I don't even have any money to spend to try to make more money. I'm not knocking pizza delivery so please don't take it personal, I'm just not interested in the extra cost(gas, oil changes etc) and wear and tear on the car associated with it.
I'm also looking at working at a couple bike(the pedal kind) shops. One place I talked to last summer said he would pay $15 an hour for a part timer with my experience. The only problem with that is I'd have to wait till March or April to start as people don't buy or ride a bicycle when it's cold and theres snow on the ground.
I don't think the bartending would be that hard to get into if I go to the right places. I'm not looking at slinging drinks at the hot night spots downtown but more like banquet halls, golf courses(I found one less than 2 min away that says experience isn't needed, I'll be stopping there after work tomarrow) and places that are beer wine and simple drinks, none of that trendy foo foo 12 ingredient stuff.
Actually the server thing just reminded me I should call my sister. She is a waitress at Cheese Burger in Paradise(Jimmy Buffets burger and drink place), which also happens to be close to home and my real job. Maybe she can set me up with something there.
Keep the ideas(construtive ideas please) coming if you have them. I appreciate it.

If you can pull down $15/hr working at a bicycle shop, pounce on it. I used to work at a shop in downtown DC, and only the manager and head mechanic made that much.

Most likely the job at BB or CC will entice you to spend more rather than help you save money. Trust me dude I worked there for the Xmas season and you'll find deals that you just won't be able to resist on (for BB, most likely it will be car audio). If you had to pick between the 2, I would choose Circuit City because Best Buy does not pay any commission.

The shop that I worked at, I put in 5 years there, I started as a basic mechanic and was manager by the end. The only person up the ladder from me was the owner and he was never there. My experience is what probably got me that offer but I didn't follow through at the time cause the money situation was fine last year. I'll be calling him this week for sure though.

there are also "barbacks" or something like that (basically just helps the bartender out) and they can make good money too. being a bartender at a nice place is no joke of a job, they can pull down $800 on a good friday and saturday night.
but you're going to need experience or training

Well, here's what I'd do...
Have a wedding that doesn't cost as much. That way, you don't have to get another job and you'll be able to see your fiance more. If you guys are that strapped for money, I'm sure she would understand that if you can't really afford the wedding then making it less expensive makes perfect sense. I know a lot of girls want some big, expensive, extravagent wedding... but I don't know why anyone would spend $25,000 or more for one night of "fun." Oh, aren't her parents supposed to fork over some money?
More on topic... work at a 7-11. You can probably get any hours you want and free coffee and slurpees.

I second that.... I ended up spending a good bit of my check at CC when I worked there... but that's not always a bad thing, if you're buying things you were gonna buy anyway....
and CC doesn't pay commission either.....
Just elope......

Ahh... I never knew they didn't pay commission. Hopefully The Good Guys still pays commission, especially since they sell high end electronics. Maybe commission and spiffs?
Somehow I don't think he has much say in the wedding plans or the fiance has already rejected the cheaper wedding idea because I, for one, would have suggested that by now, but men are not always the boss in the house. When a woman has her mind set on something, just let her be. You're probably better off going with her idea.
As far as working in a convenience store, that's too dangerous of a job to make minimum wage...you might as well flip burgers. Plus, it would mean that he has to quit using deodorant and learn a funny Indian accent. As far as flipping burgers, I don't know if they have any similar place out where he lives, but in California, NV, and Arizona we have a burger joint called In N' Out which starts off their employees at $9/hr compared to minimum wage at most other fast food places. Sometimes nothing can satisfy your hunger like their Double Double w/ cheese and a basket of their fresh cut fries.
The wedding is already on a budget and it can't get any smaller. All the decisions are already made and deposit given to the country club, photographer, dj etc...., and actually for the size of wedding we are having we're not spending that much. The total bill including honey moon(6 nights at Sandals in Jamaica) is about 15K for 150 people. I wish there were ways to make the wedding cheaper but there really isn't. We're already doing all the decorations and flowers ourselfs, my fiancee's sister is doing the cake, the country club was actually cheaper than alot of banquet halls we looked at, and my fiancee has become a bargain hunting pro. I do wish her parents could fork over some more cash but they just got divorced about 6-8 months ago and neither one of them are any good with money. I might hit them and my parents up for another $500 each though, I just hate asking for anything from anybody. I've got a couple bike shops to call today and a golf course to stop at on my way home(bartending), so I'll let you guys know how it goes.
if i ever spent 25,000 dollars on one night of fun i better wake up in amsterdam naked with 4 piercings and 5 new tatoos!!!

Hmmm, paper route? ;) A friend of mine bartends on weekends (at a pool hall) and she makes some good money on top of her full time job. She also fills in on holidays and cycles around people's day's off. As for Best Buy....having a second job at a retail store...ok, but do they make commission there? Why not find a place that works on commission if you are a good salesman? My ex could sell **** on a stick to people, and he made some fine coin doing it, although some months were better than others at Future Shop....like Christmas. Hard to find things that operate from 6-10 or something to make any decent money. And I'm also worried you'll burn yourself out come August doing the second job for max amount of hours.
sell crack.
to children.
a lot.
:D
I've thought about that but I can't go on the honeymoon if I'm behind bars.
thats why you sell it to children, since they don't know how to contact the poilce and there are millions of them that are very trusting......

don't worry i got this **** all figured out for you... and if it doesn't work i hear mexico is really nice in august ;)

I see 2GTS, I suppose that's a reasonable amount to spend on a wedding.
No chance at 7-11? It can't be that bad... and I figure it should be pretty easy.
The problem with 7-11 is that I speak english fluently, which is an automatic disqualification. And trust me this is wedding is very resonably priced without going to a vfw hall and having kfc do the catering. I was going to stop at the golf course after work tonight but what do know they're closed mondays. I guess I'll have something to do tomorrow, along with the phone calls I had no time to make.

If you're looking for something temporary I'd suggest valet parking. You can pull in a lot of money working in the evening at restaurants or clubs. On a busy night you may make $300 in tips. My brother used to do that. The nice part is you'll get plenty of exercise on the job running to pick up cars and you'll drive plenty of nice cars.
yeah we went to a galla last night.
i saw two ferraris, three carrera gt4's and a srt-10 and that was only in the time we were waiting for our car. I gave him a 5 dollar tip, and i'm poor so imagine what they gave him

"keep your money, and go buy yourself another one of those cheap *** suits...now time to get yo' fat *** out the car...im not here for you, im here for the car"
