Hi
i was just wondering if you guys in the US have the same center console as our base model has. i havent seen any pics of this being in one of your cars
http://dstaber.customer.netspace.net.au/Console.jpg
Also, i was puting a head unit into this guys 2004 elantra base model (like mine) and notised that he had a center console with the arm rest and compartment.
I asked him how he got that and he told me that he complained that it was hard to get the car into reverse (5sp) if the park brake was on. so they replaced his center console and gave him one of a totally diff design.
I went down to my local Hyundai dealership and told them that my car has a problem geting into reverse and the guy there tried to tell me that it was just a normal thing.
Untill i mentioned the guys name and that they swaped over consoles for free and his attitude changed completely. he then tried to tell me that it was changed over a fair while ago (it hapened in novenber, not that long ago  )
I told him that i wanted my console changed over just like he did for the guy i was talking to, and he said that they may have another way of fixing the problem, i asked him too find out for me and ring me, but i will ring them in a weeks time because they are terible for not ringing back.
i also asked what the price wood be if they wouldnt do it under warranty and i wanted it done, and he told me that they have to completly change the park break pushrod cables and a new park break assembly as well as the console, and that wood likely be around $1200
any thoughts?????

That console is entirely different than anything I've seen on any US Spec Elantra...
What I noticed is that I really like the seats in there, they don't look like a confetti bomb exploded in the cabin.

Yea but you'll have to learn how to drive on the left hand side of the road, in the right hand side of the car ;)
Also i have noticed that we have a different dash/headunit/pocket configuration than that of the US models
http://dstaber.customer.netspace.net.au/Radio.jpg
The Headunit is an oem mp3 cd player in all elantras that is mounted in a cradel with 2 clips down each side of the unit, like an aftermarket clarion headunit. The pocket is part of the dash facia that removes with it when it is removed.
You do not need to pull the whole dash off to remove the headunit, but if you want to remove the dash, the headunit has to come out.
It is a great shape as you can install an aftermarkef headunit with the headinits facia/surrounding and it looks much nicer.
i have installed one before as stated in the first topic starter, i will be doing mine soon :D pics will follow when this is done

Wow, that HU looks great also, much nicer than the Kenwood they were issuing with US Elantras. :P
Why do other countries always get all the nice stuff and the US get stuck with things that look like bad afterthoughts?

The older Elantra GL's (not GLS's) in Canada came with the center console like that.
About the center of the dash, that's eww. The headunit looks all big and out of place. You do have the card holder instead of the airbag light thing, which I like more.

That radio looks out of place, it breaks the flow of the dash
I have noticed the select reverse glitch: if the park brake is on, its hard if not impossible to select reverse gear ( manual trans obviously) well you `can` but its a lil easier to release park brake then select reverse then re-apply park brake if you on a hill. The cup holders in our base model console are a little tricky iff you put a macdonalds style drink in them the drink sits low and if you arent on the ball when you go to remove the drink you squeeze top off and coke and swear words fill the cabin.

Yea jh0n, its just a glitch that isnt really such a problem as i dont even use the park brake to do hill starts (let alone reverse hill starts)
but id really like a center console with the armrest and storage compartment and i know they have swaped it over for another guy under waranty.
so if its good for him then i want it too

Yes everything in the car is factory/stock

I'm going to have to say "Me too!" on the seats.
Confetti Bomb :) Hehe. I joke that my wife's '04 Accent's interior cloth was based off party napkins. It's awful!

ROFL. I can really relate to that. :D
As for the center console, I really miss not having an armrest. I believe that the XD's from '02,'03 do have the armrest, and the part should be easily interchangable.
Take a look at this mini picture from elantra 2003 aussie brochure:
http://www.hyundai.com.au/images/brochure/elantra2003/elantra_08.jpg
Also I thought that the elite models on the 04's do have the armrest, but not sure.

canadian 04's have what looks like the 01-03 HVAC as well. but the connectors are the same as the US 04.

I was thinking... don't the seats' cloth covering come off? I wonder if you can buy just the nice cloth covering on the seat. That would be a hell of a lot cheaper than buying & shipping entire seats from Australia. I haven't messed with my seats at all in that regard, but if you can install heated seats underneath the cloth, couldn't you swap out the cloth covering?
yes the cloth comes off, its kind of a pain in the ***...
i am redoing my rear seats in the same fake leather as the door panels and center console lid, its not easy to get that **** off let me tell you
shawn :)
