First off, thanks for those that posted pics of their cars in COTM so I could get a hatch and a sedan with the same angle for the photochop.
Now, They look like they're so close to fitting on their own, it should only take a minor bit of modification to make them fit... what do you think?
http://www.nitrousworld.com/pictures/4lights.jpg
so you are adding hatch tails to sedan?

Oh, I guess I should have made that statement... lol.
Yes, adding the hatch tails on either side of the license plate to a sedan.
oooooooooooooooo
i see what you are talking about now!!!!!
ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww :(
I think it will look good, very custom. Take plenty of picts, I'm interested in how hard this will be.

I need to track down a set of lights first. Dealer wants $76 each - so NO. Ebay's got nothing, and I'm waiting for a response from allhyundaiisuzu. If any of you guys make a junkyard trip, keep your eyes open.

If I could take mine off Mike....I'd give them to you free of charge....you could happily keep them..... I hate the look they give on my car...hence why I covered them up.

I really like mine, maybe because they are the same color as my car, red. This would definately make the car unique, although I don't think I would go through the hassle if I were you. Unless, you had the time and money, just doesn't seem worth it. Nice photochop, I still needs lots of practice, just got the program and a new scanner.

Well you'd be very unique, i think it will look good, but is it worth the money and time?

if this were any other car(namely american) i would tell you thatthe easiest thing would be to buuy a hatch's lid and cut it and then weld/sand/primer/paint it onto your egg shaped hatch wanna be(lol jfwy) you'd be done. but the odds/price of finding that would be ridiculous. looks like you got some from jo, convince her to take them off and you're home free. much like with pants ;)
Here are two places close to your area with the whole hatch for sale, call them and see if they would sell you just the lights

 LOL.... Well, I wanted to take them off, and just shave the whole back, but then I was stuck with where to put the reverse lights considering I was not keeping my bumper on throughout the seasons....

I think it's pretty cool looking.
I'm sure you could get just the light assemblies from a junkyard pretty cheaply. Try calling Stoystown Auto (1-800-358-8770 ) in Stoystown PA. I know they have at least one totalled XD GT that I scavenged some parts from... I think it was wrecked from behind but the lenses might be OK.

I've been thinking about this for a long time, but since it's so much work I never thought about it too hard.
The problem I see is that the outer edge of the new taillights don't match up correctly with the lines of the sedan trunk lid. The new taillights kind of curve in, while the trunk lid lines stay straight. Do you know what I'm saying?
That's not even the hardest part, mounting them seems like a lot of work to me. Maybe a shop that does custom work on pickup trucks could mold them in for you (I'm thinking S-10's with Corvette lights in the back bumper... I'm sure you've seen that).
Good luck though, I'd be next in line if you had a reasonable plan on making it work.

lol. I'll steal your lights and you'll like it.
GMAN/Kylemorg: Thanks for the numbers, I'll be giving them a call once I hear back from AHI.
SuperGLS: yea, I worry a little about that curve, but we'll see how much of a difference it'll be after I can find some loose lights to physically hold up there. As far as mounting, it'll most likely call for holes to be cut/drilled through the trunklid... won't be the first holes I've put in it. As far as paying to have it done... no. Only as a last resort. I feel that paying a shop for repair/maintenance is ok, but modding should be something you do yourself. Paying for others to mod your car is uber-lame, something for posers with no car skill (painting being an exception).
Ilan - Thanks for showing me the rice lights... but I only want to put something there that looks like it belongs there, even if it does take a little more work to cut/mold/fill the OEM lights in there.
Like I said, I need to get my hands on a pair of lights before I know anything else about the amount of work that it will take.

I did another quick chop there from another angle, and used my actual car this time.

That chop looks really good Mike. I think if you get this done I'll have to make a trip out to Chicago. Good luck.

me likey http://www.websmileys.com/sm/fingers/fing32.gif I hope they fit
what are they going to be used for???
I mean, you have reverse lights and tail/brake lights already... are they just a 4th and 5th brake light??
If you do install them, you should put in strobes lol

Well Sed made a point... which lately its more of a negative stance on everyones projects... But I think you could go either way with lighting... transparent paint is your friend! as I made a pic for ref. top part painted tails bottom part painted lic. plate lights...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v149/diamondave/rearlightseq1.bmp
^^^ I like the idea of painting the new lights and have them as only marker lights.. as they are on the hatches
Also I debadged it.... even the crooked H.. being that your working on the trunk as a whole anyway:)
hey! hmm you do have a point...
sorry if i have been negative in the last few weeks.
Mike, its a great idea, it really is pioneering, I should have said just not for me in the beginning!
sorry again :(

Blackdiamond, I like the second chop you did also, that's the way I'd want to do it.
Forget paint, I have a BUNCH of red vinyl if anyone needs some.

why not just try to get us some of those concepto rear add on's that include lights?

hmmm. Still looking for these lights. Dealer wants $76 each. Allhyundaiisuzu wants $45 each, which $90 is still too much for not knowing if they'll work or not. I'm trying some other online junkyards right now too. A lot of the places will not sell these lights without selling the whole hatch with them... LAME.

i like the idea of all red, not red and clear. and if you do this, you should debadge everything, it looks much more luxurious and clean!
hyunelan2
02-15-2005, 09:20 PM
Well, there's a certain process that has to occur here.
1. Get the lights
2. Make them fit/install them
3. Modify them for appearance (all red, etc)
4. Other (such as debadge).
As a general preference, I don't like debadged. It cheapens the look of the car IMO, makes it look like someone gave it a paint job and didn't spring for the emblems to remount them... but that's just me. Dunno why I never jumped on the debadging wagon.
Anyway, we're on step 1. We'll consider things like debadging if we ever get that far.
