6x9's in the rear deck lid and 6 3/4's in the door. If you have the 6 speaker set up you will have an additional tweeter in the front of the arm rest on the door.

Nope, what rckozma said is only for the sedan. The hatchback has 6 3/4" speakers front & rear w/ separate front tweeters.

If you go to www.crutchfield.com and search by "what fits my car" it'll filter their products to the ones that only fit your year/model XD...

sorry for bumping an old thread but i decided to go ahead and only replace my speakers instead of getting a sub. so i kno tha rears r 6 x 9's. but whats the biggest speakers that will fit in the front doors of a 2003 GLS sedan without any modification??? ive read 6 3/4's but i just want someone to verify for me before i go out and buy any. thank you

6.75" (aka 6&3/4) is the OEM size. I don't think you can put anything bigger into the door without modification. There are few true 6.75" speakers out there, but most 6.5" speakers come with an adapter to make them fit 6.75" openings.

ok so 6 3/4's will fit without any issues. ok good, now i can go shopping. :) thanks
well. after a quick trip to bestbuy, i bought some 85$ pioneer 6x9's n installed them in the back with help from my dad. was a ***** to do tho, had to remove the 3rd brake light, remove the ends of the rear seats, and then unscrew everything and take it off, just to get to the 4 screws holding down the speakers... such a stupid design, the lil plastic grill that covers the speakers shud have been one of those snap on/snap off grills, woulda made life a hell of alot easier....
maybe in a few weeks ill go pick up some 6 3/4's for the front, hopefully those will be easier to swap than these were... but who knows... lol
these are the 6x9's

for the fronts, I highly recommend getting components and powered with an amp . I replaced my stock with aftermarket and they sound 10x better especially if you aren't gonna get a sub

don't like pioneer speakers (they are a lower end compared to other speakers), I would go with alpine or infinity. I've got a/d/s components (but they run like $400 for the pair and mine are the asia version).

returned the 6x9's i got from bestbuy, turns out the radio, which is suposedly a 200watt radio... couldnt handle the 250watt limit of the speakers... which is funny because in my 1992 excel, i installed a 200 watt pioneer radio... with brand new sony xplodes, front AND back.. and ive NEVER had ANY problems with the radio not having enough balls to play them... so either the set i got was bad or this radio is a piece of ****... but ya i returned them, n put the oem's back in and it sounds good again... lol
maybe when i get my pioneer dvd deck... ill go for a 2nd attempt at upgrading the sound... but for now, oem's it is!
btw the sound was... scary... screeching high pitched noises... like... it was painful... i got scared i was like WTF?!?!?!

when u look at the radio powering u wanna look at power per channel, that is what is going to each speaker. then u look at the rms of each speaker and match them up.

^^Yeah, limits are exactly that.............limits. You need to be more aware of the RMS rating and compare it to the HU. So, if your HU is 50x4, your new speakers should carry an RMS rating of 50w. Petes, if you go to the Newington BB, stop in the audio bay next time if you have any speaker questions. I know the guys there and I also know the guys inside have no idea what they're talking about. The install guys are the one to talk to if that's where you're gonna buy.

What they said^^^

Well, check the RMS settings on the HU carefully. Most that say they are 50x4 are "peak" 50w. RMS is usually more like 17-22w per channel.
also the older sonys were more for oem upgrades, they had really low power requirement, which is why they worked fine. Also 6x9s often have higher requirements then other sizes just because the magnet is often bigger just to much more surface area. often the alpine type s and the lower end infinity 2 way are decent oem upgrades. but some stock radios are still just so crap that very little speakers can be properly powered. hence why kenwoods low end and jensen get any business at all. they basically are the lower end of the aftermarkets but the often have really low power reqs

go with the ca600m for 70$.
all in all youre going to have a really nice powered component set for around 150-175$
in my opinion the cadence cwm-6 are the best components around for that price, and that amp is decent and puts out the perfect amount of power for those comps.
