Does this affect the black areas as well? And would this allow you to use regular bulbs with Blue Condoms on them?

On a side note, I've noticed all your close up pics are blurry. Does your camera have a macro setting?

no green film against the icons...which is how it is from the factory and that's why changing the color on the HVAC has always been an involved project.

Oh that is COOL! This could make it SOOO much easier to change the lighting color on those controls. Don't get me wrong, the LED's look sweet, but man the process to install them looks like a PITA. Here's hoping...

Unless I'm mistaken, you still need to cut the old LEDs and solder new ones in to change the color. Just now, they will look good, not with a green tint :D

The HVAC is not lit by LEDs. There are 3 incand. bulbs in it.

How was ilan soldering LEDs in, then...?

Ilan (and others) have added LED bulbs to the HVAC and removed the incand lights. It's not like the window switches where you just change the leds. The HVAC is a pita because you need to completely add new leds.

the reason different color incand. bulbs wouldn't work is beacuse of that green tint. LEDs however are waaay brighter and shine through the green tint and the color is not visibly affected by it. but since LEDs produce very focused beam of light you had do use not just 3 in place of stock incond. bulbs but a bunch more.

So would you still be able to use the colored covers on the lights? It would be a hell of a lot easier than the LED work up.

wow thats pretty cool... ive tried taking the film off with rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover, but it started to effect the black surrounding.... ilan you have no problems at all with the black surrounding?

That's the same question I asked earlier this morning. That and using the Colored condoms to change different colors.

Forgive me if I'm way over-simplifying this, but if the green backing can be easily and safely removed, couldn't you just paint-on or in some other way attach a different color backing to the icons? It'd be a hell of a lot simpler than changing out the bulbs. (If you could get the color right.)

yes this is an oversimplification. have you ever taken out the hvac unit?? well the bulbs are way easier to change then changing the color of the icons with paint, tint or whatever else. if my memory serves me right all 3 bulbs can be changed without taking the hvac apart ...to get to the icons you'll have to unscrew the unit.

of course i am talking about chaning stock bulbs for colored incond. bulbs...not LEDs

in my opinion, the LED conversion is seriously very easy, just looks/ sounds hard... painting the icons would not be a very effective task it'll reduce quality, but making the icons clear will actually make the LED's give out their true color and not a slightly torquise blue or a tinted green superwhite

I see what you're getting at. Still do the LED conv. but have a better quality look when done. Sweet.

i still say that having green film there makes no difference if you do LED conversion to blue or red....maybe if you do white. getting rid of that film will help to those who don't wanna bother with LED conversion and just want to slip on some colored defusers on stock bulbs

when you remove the green there is no backing at all, the black stays intact, Now if you decide to change the bulbs to red, you still have Red on the temperature side and the knob indicators(04-05) so you will kill the red effect, after you remove the green you can add film as a color you just have to play with it untill you get it right, is best to do an LED convertion and then use some diffusing plastic on the back of the icons.

I knew there was a reason I bought SuperGlue last weekend ;)

I wonder which ingredient in the super glue takes the film off. Is there a particular brand of super glue we shoudl be using? And how exactly is it done? Do I just drop the glue on and wipe it off? Ilan is awesome.

Also, with the green color now gone, you can get a pretty good red effect by placing your own colored film behind the icons. Similar to changing the clock color. I'm thinking this would be better than using bulb condoms.

The Mini Aqua blue LEDs look great. It took me about 8 hours though. I would not do this on my other GLS's. It shines like a mofo. But to much time to do it again.

I used a ultra concentrated (20:1) water-acetone. Film Be Gone. I also heard goo gone works

I just tried goo gonne and I would not recomend it, the piece Im using is a bad one so I am experimenting, Goo gone takes a lot of rubbing and takes off the black too.

Very slick. I hope I have enough of the gel left to correctly tint this stuff (used most of it on my clock) it doesn't look like I'd need a lot, but there's only one way to find out :) Excellent work ilan, what kind of crack were you smoking when you dreamt this up? Hehe.

Is all up to you, This would be a step on the right direction, but is no guaranty you will get the results you want, I think the Reverse indiglos would look awesome.
you still need a LED convertion with this.

How about going to a local hobby store and getting transparent/clear modeling paint?

They come in transparent blue, green, orange, yellow, and red.

Here's one example online ...

a combo of removing the green and using LED's is the highest quality, better then painting and using blue or red film
