I recently bought a 2005 5dr Elantra and I am very happy with it, except for the performance of the headunit.
I have a JVC cassette deck paired to a 10 disc CD changer. I will replace the head unit on the dash, but where do I install the changer?
The owner's manual says there is a dedicated place in the trunk to install the changer, but as much as I have looked, there is no flat area in the trunk to install it, except for the back of the rear seats. No room under the driver seat, which is my favorite location.
I really don't want to install it behind the rear seat, because I like the functionality of folding the seat backs to carry larger items.
Anyone out there has installed a changer and where?

Thanks,

Hmmm.... Haven't put one into THIS car (i had one in my old '91 cavi), but it seems to me like a good hidden location would perhaps be in the passenger's ''foot well'', with something to prevent it from being kicked.

although it won't fit under the driver's seat, there's a chance it will fit under the passenger's seat. you've got about three inches of height to work with, or more if you relocate the airbag and weight sensor electrical connectors plugging into the seat from below. they are snapped in place below the seat bottom and stick down below the lowest point on the seat bottom.

alternatively, it may fit in the glove box.

Thanks to both of you, but I tried. It will not fit under either of the front seats. As far as the passenger foot well, that won't work either, because there is the blower and other stuff in the way, no solid attach points, and it would interfere with the glove box down travel.
The only place that I can see is somewhere in the trunk; perhaps with some velcro strips glued to the liner, it will be steady enough.

You will want to mount it firmly wherever you put it in the trunk -- I've found that CD players and changers skip more when they aren't anchored well enough.

It sounds counter-intuitive, but it appears that the CD head unit / changer manufacturers have designed the dampering to absorb the primary shock of the bumps, but not the secondary shock of the player moving around after the shock.

Possibly you could fit it in behind the wheelwell arch near the tail-lights?

Thanks again to all. You are such an enthusiastic crowd! I am spending hours going through the posts in all categories. I have decided to put it in the left side of the trunk rear side cavity and I'll bolt it down on its rear end facing up. I'll just have to make some brackets to ensure complete stability.

I have mine mounted to the sub box and I have never had a skip. This may not work for every changer though cause I had an old changer and when I did the same thing it would always skip.
