View Full Version : Removing antenna base?

Does anyone have any idea of how to remove the black base part of the antenna? You know what piece I'm talking about, I hope.

I looked in the trunk and found this:

http://www.elantraxd.com/images/question0001.JPG

http://www.elantraxd.com/images/question0002.JPG

... but it didn't look or feel like it could come out.

So, thoughts?

i tried to google a solution and found nothin?! i would almost say rag around a wrench and pull but that may cause some damage. is there any particular reason for this? or is it a secret?

It's a ricer thing to lose any convenience of the antenna itself.

:D

off topic-i unscrewed my antenna the other day and was comparin it to my step moms 2000 elantra. seems like my 04 has about 2 inches more than the 2000. just kinda interesting as if that makes a huge diference. I might hafta swap just for a little bit smaller antenna.

chop it off boi.

Well, I want to get rid of the silver piece at the top of the black base if at all possible.

Anyone else?

KeWLKaT
02-15-2005, 10:44 PM
I don't get it. Let me check it out.

Back... hmmm... scared top try it on my car, but it seems as if you pull firmly counterclockwise, by grabbing on to the black part, it would come out.

then again, im not sure.

Anyone have any other ideas? I found some info on Webtech for previous Elantras, so I guess I'll give that a try.

Yellow_Elantra

The silver piece at the top is a nut that screws on to hold
the antenna to the car.

the best way to get this off is to use a pair of multi-grips
and a heavy (thick) rag

There is actually a 2 prong tool that can remove the nut,
they are hard to come by.

Yah, there is a special tool to remove it the silver cap. You should be able to use a set of needle nose pliers though. I beleive the black base is a rubber gromet. Once you remove the silver piece, you should be able to pull out that metal adapter from below. Then the grommet should slide out the top.

I haven't tried this on my elantra. I only speak from experience when I switched to a powered antenna on my celica.

I went to check mine, and that silver base was VERY loose. So I screwed it down all the way, nice and tight. It makes me wonder if that will solve one of those "mystery" sounds that comes from the back passenger side.

Anyway, hope I could help.

Thanks everyone, I'll give it a try when I feel like getting off my butt.

How easy is to replce the OEM antena for a powered one?

Atomic
02-23-2005, 08:00 PM
Its not as hard as you would think. Basically disassemble the factory antenna parts, then screw in the new antenna. You'll need to run power to it and a sensor wire to turn it on, and possibly a drain tube for when it rains. The sensor wire hooks up to your aftermarket deck, usually they have a power antenna sensor wire out.

Goto www.Crutchfield.com, about halfway down page on the left they have a "What fits my car?", type in your make+model+year, then on the next page choose Antenna's, and if you look in the recommended accessories, they have they wire kit you'll need. I think there's like 2 choices for our cars, black and silver I believe. If Crutchfield says it will fit, then it usually will. I haven't replaced the antenna on this car yet, so purchase/attempt at your own risk.

Looks great! So was the silver piece a spacer or does your antenna now hold the whole assembly together?

SuperGLS
03-03-2005, 06:34 PM
The silver spacer you see there came with the antenna. I suppose it's used for the Tiburon. ARK sent me the antenna, not knowing if it would fit or not. When I installed it with the stock antenna base it looked no good because it didn't sit flush. After removing the OEM silver antenna base, it works perfectly. ARK is DEFINITELY reccomended.

have you had a chance to try out the radio reception with the new antenna?

SuperGLS
03-03-2005, 08:08 PM
It definitely suffers in the reception dept. EDIT- It was bad sitting in front of my house, after driving around, everywhere else it's only slightly static'afied.

But, this is for looks, who needs the radio... what I need is some XM.

Do you happen to make them in billet aluminum, maybe even anodized? I used to have a short antenna like that on my Celica. I'd be interested if you offer that.

^^^^Doh, checked your site, I like the blue anodized. I'm in for a GB on the anodized billet ones.

I wonder if that's not part of the rubber antenna, that came loose from the antenna instead of the base....

Can somebody with an 04 hatch take their stock antenna off to see how it's threaded.... that would solve this pretty quickly....

Eh, Scott? That's the adapter that came with that weak rubber antenna that I gave you last year. It is not at all part of the car; just grab it as tight as you can with some lockjaw pliers and untwist that puppy. Doesn't matter if you strip the upper threads with the lockjaws unless you want to use your ex-antenna again.

glad I decided to log in to XD today after a few months off. :D

I just ordered the black antenna. The total is $47 USD to Canada, not $44 like the EXD front page ad says though. I didn't realize how short and great it looks until I looked at this post today. I don't care if it affects radio reception or not, I only listen to the engine or sometimes my CDs, my girlfriend may have another opinion on this though! :S
