View Full Version : Rear speakers 2002 Elantra VE sedan
hey,
this question probably has a simple answer(I hope). How do the rr speaker grills(6x9's) come out of the back deck on a Elantra Sedan??? I see lots of clips underneath in the trunk, But I can't seem to find the right ones that remove the grills, and I don't wanna trash the grills by prying them off with a flathead screwdriver. I'm sure I just need new glasses and there is something really obvious that I'm missing....thanks in advance for the help!

ok ...first....take out the back seat. The top and bottom cushions. Then remove the cushions on the side of the seats. Then remove the c-pillar. Then you can remove the deck that has all those clips. this was alot easier said then done. this job took me a good 2 hours not knowing what to do exactly.
I'll throw up some pics of how it was looking....
the last one there is how the grill is connected to the deck.

yea, and while you're changing the speakers, insulate the crap outta that parcel shelf...otherwise you'll be wishing you did 6 months later..:)
holy crap!!!...I didn't figure it was that labour intensive...I'll have to plan more mods around the speaker swap while I have the back of the car ripped out. Thanks for the detailed pics and instructions!

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but how do I get the side cushions off? I just got a 2003 Elantra and don't know a whole lot about the back area.
Also, I was thinking about hooking up an amp to two Alpine Type R's rather than getting a sub. Anyone have that setup or know how it will sound? Thanks.

I didn't see a DIY in that section about removing the rear deck.

Thanks alot man. That's going to help a ton. Very, very much appreciated.
Just out of curiosity, that site is for a 2004 -2005 Elantra. I have a 2003 and figure that it ia the same process. Just want to make sure before I embark on this thing. Thanks again.

personally i think its pointless to remove the back seats, just fold them down and work around them. i took out my speakers in about 20minutes. if i did it again i could do it in 10.

How? It doesn't seem like there is any other way.

You can remove it quite easily, at least i did.
Remove the c-pillars (pull hard)
Remove the side cushions (pull hard)
Remove the 3rd brake light by pushing up the tabs from the trunk
Remove the top row of plastic rivets holding the deck material to the black plastic (4)
Remove the two plastic rivets above the black plastic (2)
Remove the three bolts with covers on them on top of the deck (3)
Push in the 4 plastic rivets from inside the trunk
Pull up and out carefully to remove the deck.
I promise you it's much easier, i could do it again in 10minutes if i had the tools next to me.

And this would work fine for a 2003? Did you remove the weather stripping too? And I thought the side were bolted in?

i did this on an 01' GLS. You dont exactly have to completely remove the weather stripping, just unattatch the part that covers the edge of the c-pillar. my c-pillars are not bolted on (im talking the plastic pillars on the sides of the deck).

Side seat bolster ARE bolted in at the bottom. If you try to pull them out you're going to destroy them in the process.
there are many ways of getting into them, I didn't remove my C-pillar trim, I just flexed the trim panel in the middle enough to clear the trim and slid it out. A lot of cursing was involved.

lol i dunno if mine are broke but i yanked on em pretty hard and shot a couple F words, they fit back in pretty firm and dont move around so apparently they still work good as new.

It doesn't seem like it's that difficult to take the rear seat out though. Wouldn't it just be easier to remove it and have more room?

for what it's worth...
it took me 5 minutes to remove the side bolsters with the help of my girl holding the bottom of the seat down to give me access to the bolster mounting bolt at the bottom.
didnt even let loose with an F bomb. that came later. and again. and.....

So is it worth doing it or should I just remove the seat? If it's a pain in the a** I might as well take out the seat.

Either way its gonna be a pain in the ***. I had to lay down in some pretty akward posititions to get to clips and bolts. The DIY makes it look almost easy but it isn't, if anything the FAQ is more of a reference guide if you get stuck in the process.
If i were you, id try to do it without removing the seats, then if you get stuck or for some reason the seats are in the way, take them out.
This is what happens when we all buy hyundais.

the best way is to follow the DIY it is easy and people will tell you to "do this" and to "do that" differently. think of it this way, there is a DIY for a reason. just like assembly instructions, you should follow it as closely as humanly possible. the DIY explains it with little to no damage to the car (those plastic screws are a PITA). and easy to assemble. I can get it done in 5min after reading the DIY and having done it myself. Following everystep by memory. its just that easy.

Aight thanks, Vamp. I was probably going to do the full method anyway.
OK guys, now a wiring question. I just bought a mono 300W amp from my buddie. It was a great deal, so I picked it up. Eventually, I will probably run a 12" sub off of it. However, for now I was curious whether I could somehow amplify 4 or at least 2 speakers. I figure there is probably some circuit I could build that would work, but would it even be worth it?

yes, if you follow the wiring diagram floating around here somewhere, you can amp two speakers on one channel (aka bridging). if you do it correctly, it will be amazing! if done uncorrectly, you will need a new amp, and possibly new speakers soon after.

hey buddy, a mono or monoblock amp as some people refer to them are single channel amps designed for subs.
Typically, they are 2 or even 1 ohm stable, and yes you can run multiple speakers off the amp, insuring your impedence load does matches the amp's rating.
So....if you run a pair of 4ohm components wired in paralell which would give the amp a 2 ohm load, this is fine, BUT......it will be a mono signal. I guess it would work until you get a sub.

actually, most mono amps only produce signal up to a few hundred hz and as such are meant strictly for subs. you can hook up speakers to them, but you won't get much sound out of them.

Alright guys, I think I've made a decision. Since I only have the mono amp right now, I am not going to amp the speakers and instead will get a 12" sub. Hopefully I will eventually get a 2 or 4 chanel amp to use for the speakers, but that can wait for now.
Quick question though. We installed my head unit before as we've done dozens of times before. However, ever since it was installed there is an electrical problem. When the car is running, everything works fine. However, when the engine is not running, all electrical cuts out. Nothing will work at all. I figure that there is a break in the circuit and thus the current cuts out. Probably will be easy to figure out, but wanted to see if anyone here knew what it was before tackling it.

true, true.
Fosgate used to (I think they still do) make a mono amp that had full 20 - 20K frequency response, complete with a LP AND HP crossover. I always thought that was insane, but whatever.

Alright, ran into a major issue here.
The headunit will work, however the unit has no memory once the car is turned off. The red wire (12v) has no power coming from it at all. Is this right? Also, when the key is not in, the power locks and lights will not work.
