OK, I'm gonna do some tint (or have done, rather). I am only doing the back window and the rear side windows (The Law is a *****). That said, I don't think i want to go too dark, because it'll make the front stand out as not being tinted a lot more. I dunno, what do you guys think.

ALSO: For those who have been tinted by a shop, what is a ballpark figure of what you paid? I'm trying to sort out the order of mods, and cost is an important scheduling factor.

I think that a 35% tint is enough to darken the ambient light sufficiently and improve the exterior look of the car, but it won't be dark enough to make your car look funny.

I had mine done at a professional shop with a lifetime warranty and it cost me a little under $200.

I think you should go 35% all around, the law shouldn't touch you at all. If you are worried, then I'd go with 35% with 50% on the front side windows.

I paid $220, full lifetime warranty to fading, peeling, purple'ing, scratching, etc.

Every good place around here is the same price.

The law I know in Jersey is the front window and front driver's and passangers CANNOT be tinted or it won't pass inspection. I don't know what the laws are in illonios but I'm guessing they're similiar.

I just removed my front tints after having to deal with the cops out in the suburbs here more times than i wanted to. That said, I now have 20% tint in the back only, and it works out pretty well.. helps that the car is black though too.

The shop I got mine done at charges $165 for the back tints.

I have 20% on both front and back. Law states maximum of 35%.
Haven't had a problem though, this is my second car with lower than legal tint. First was on a 1983 Mazda 929 Wagon.
Anyhow, I agree with the general concensus that you should get 35% on the rear if you aren't touching the front.
I paid 260 which is average for good quality.

I think I paid about $230ish for 35% on the fronts and 20% on the back at Ziebart(they have since changed their name to something I don't remember). It's been atleast one year maybe two(my memory is going) and I have yet to have a single issue with the law. If you avoid getting pulled over in the first place and roll down the window before the cop gets there you should have no problems doing the front windows. But if you're still concerned deff no darker than 35% on the back otherwise the naked front will look funny.

I paid a little over $200, i have 5% on the back and 35% on the front... I dont have pics of it on my elantra yet, but i had the same thing on my TIb and it looked good...

Thanks for the chop Ilan. I can't wait to get the suspension done so this year I wo'nt have the monster truck syndrome with the 17"s on there.

Anyway, I'll probably just go with 35% in the rear. I have to drive through Grundy County Sherriff's speed traps every day. They got my mom for tinted windows (that's the entire reason she was pulled over, nothing but windows) and I know they have nothing better to do. I don't have to worry about the actual 'in town' cops, but I have a 15 minute drive throught the middle of nowhere to get from where I work (and am going to live) to this crappy middle-of-nowhere town (Morris), and that's when I'll get popped.

I might actually go to walmart and buy some of that tint-film in different percentages, then tape it on the window to see which % looks the best. Maybe if I had a 35% on the rears, a 50% on the front wouldn't be too noticible? I'll have to see.

I got 35% all around, for $189, Id say go with 35%

I have 17% all around, I paid around $190. I had 7% on my car before and never got in trouble

Use the same % around. I think it looks tack when u do really dark on the back windows and then a low % on the front.....JMO.

not true ilan,

The law actually reads that Florida state police must be able to read a newspaper through your window with the door closed.

I swear to god, that is the offical law

Shawn :)

oh and mike, I got 0% in the back and 35% up front, just cause you can't see **** at night with 0%, it doesn't look bad imo

Whatever you decide, stay constant on the sides (If you do the front). The side view with two different shades looks tacky. In the back you can go a little darker though.

BTW, Tinted my own for the $40 for the QUALITY tint, and my time. Came out fantastic (8th car of mine that I've done...practice,practice,practice). But the going rate here is about $150 - $200 for a four door.

Mine is 20% in the rear and 35% in the front. I like it, some don't like the 2 different shades, but it looks fine to me.

When you guys "tint the front" do you also tint the windshield? Is it a good idea or bad idea...?

I've seen some cars with it only tinted where a text banner would go...

input?

You need to know the laws in your area and how they're enforced. Like in PA, any aftermarket tint is illegal. This is mainly to keep the super-bubbled losers off the streets. Really, if the job is done well/right, the'll never know. Anyway, it's one of those deals where they can't stop you for it, but if they stop you for something else, they'll use it to start tacking on extra fines really quick.

That being said, I know I've seen guys around here that walk the edge of the law. I think our darkest tint allowed is 35%, but I've seen guys that do a gradient tint
http://www.boyracersigns.co.uk/gradienttint1.jpg
that's like 10% on the dark side and 80% on the light. They get past because the average is still okay. I wish I had a pic of it, but there was a badass Z near where I lived in Pittsburgh that had a gradient tint with the dark half at the bottom. So sweet!

20% rear and 35% sides won't give u any problem in NY metro area.

I agree with super that if u want to do only the rear sides, go for 35% rear and 50% rear sides.

The rear windshield always have to be tinted darker than the side windows to look even. I have 35% all around and the rear looks lighter than the sides because there's more light going through.

I paid $230 for it. It's on the higher end costwise, but he does an amazing tint job. Uses Llumar brand film which is the best out there, and there is no gap on the edges so it looks good even when the window is half down.

In PA I wouldn't do it. I've already been stopped in my Sonata during quota time, just because I was driving in the area at an 'unusual time' (driving home from 2nd shift work  ). I see no need to give the police any more of my money. :D

(Thread Revived). Is this true? Have other people found that the rear window should be tinted darker than the sides?

Also, on the back window - are they able to use one piece to tint it, or will I have a seem where they had to use 2 seperate pieces of film? My Camaro had to use pieces due to the size and shape of the window).

florida has no tint laws
Yep, wrong info Ilan.

For those of you who have any questions about what the laws are in your state, the details are here.

STATE WINDOW TINTING RULES & LAWS (http://www.iwfa.com/iwfa/Law_Chart/State%20Law%20Chart.htm)

My windows are done with Suntek InfinityOP reflective film and it looks very nice. While it is legal at 35% on the sides, there is a little added privacy with the reflectivity. It's not mirrored but has embedded metal so it's reflective. I had my last Elantra done with 35% non-reflective and it didn't even seem like the windows were tinted ... no privacy and not much heat reflectivity. The reflective tint aids in keeping the car much more cooler inside as well. I paid $215 to have my windows tinted last week. That includes a lifetime guarantee on workmanship and materials. I did 20% on the back window because the police are only allowed to meter the door windows here in Oregon even though there is a limit of 35% for the back window.

If you have your windows professionally tinted, they will often times put samples on your glass so you can see which you would prefer.

I had my windows tinted on Friday. Looks great-I got dark as possible.

Cost about $142.

I had never noticed the OEm tint on the front windshield.

I made a photochop with a medium tint on the rear windows only. I don't think I'm going to do anything to the front windows. Do you guys think this looks too funny without anything upfront? Only solution would be to go lighter in the rear, due to the fact that I want to leave the fronts legal.

(P.S. My car is back! That was taken this afternoon. It will be dropped this weekend).

^^ It looks okay. If it were my car I'd tint the rear less so I could tint the front. Maybe you could compromise and get some tinting done on the fronts to the legal limit--it might not look as akward as if you did nothing to the fronts.

SuperGLS
04-06-2005, 08:38 AM
I still think it looks pretty bad unless you tint all the windows the same amount.

This photochop just proves my thoughts, I think.

Maybe you could compromise and get some tinting done on the fronts to the legal limit--.

Legal limit in Illinois is NONE. Can't have ANY tint up front. I know a lot of you will say you've never had problems with the law. And I never had a problem with it in my Camaro, but at the same time, I know people who have been popped within a week of putting it on. It's a destiny I prefer to avoid.

I'll do another chop with lighter tint. Pretty soon though, it'll get to be 'whats the point' lightness on the tint.

Personally, I hate the half & half look. If it's illegal anyway, do it right or don't do it.

It's only illegal to the the fronts. There's no limit on the rears.

You can do 35% all around. You obviously can not tint the whole front window but u can do a strip on the front.

KeWLKaT
04-06-2005, 07:16 PM
Do this:

35 in the front, 25 in the back sides and 20 in the rear.

The fact that it gets darker gradually eliminates the ''oh my good, half tint!'' and helps you keep the cops away, because the front looks lighter than the back window.

hyunelan2
04-06-2005, 09:01 PM
Umm. No. I am not putting ANY tinit on the front windows. I don't want to give a cop a reason to pull me over at 3:30 in the morning, when I've had two beers and have to walk the line - all because of window tint.

It's back and rear-sides or none.

Agree that the lighter tint up front and the darker in the rear makes it look 'ok' but you can still tell an obvious difference between the windshield and the sides, even if lightly tinted.
