I bought one off E-bay from a 2002 GLS for $40. I have a 2001 GLS with a tape deck. I just want a cd player. Not really wanting to do anything else to the stereo. I hear it's a direct swap. What's the procedure for removing the trim to get at the screws that hold the head unit in place? If you have a photo it would be even better. Thanks!

trim - 2 screws above cluster, 2 behind ash tray...trim around HVAC and cluster will pull right out after those 4 screws...disconnect wires to move it away, and theres like 6 screws holding the unit in

Thanks very much! I didn't think it would be too hard but least now I know what to look for when my cd player arrives. I can't believe even by 01 standards that Hyundai was still selling vehicles with a tape deck. If they haven't already they should drop cassettes & make a cd player standard equipment.

Both of my 2004s came with cassette decks. The CD player came with cruise control as a $200 option. Of course, none of those were in stock. I got mine without but put my own Pioneer MP3/WMA player in. Would have liked cruise control though.

Yeah mine doesn't have cruise either. It would've been nice but I generally don't use it much unless it is a really really long trip. I also wish I had the ABS/Traction control but so far the power brakes seem quite good. I suppose they just use the tape deck as an excuse to get people to pony up more dollars for the higher end models.

Disconnect your positive battery terminal before you swap radios. There's not a big chance of shorting anything out, but better safe than sorry.

The factory CD head unit sounds OK, especially for $40.

As for the traction control and ABS, I have it on my '02 GT, but I don't find that it helps much -- I can modulate my braking and acceleration on slippery surfaces better than the computer. The only time I found ABS helped was one time during a panic stop at highway speeds in the rain. You're not missing much.

I imagine if you really wanted cruise, you could add it -- I think that can be a dealer installed option, so there shouldn't be too much work involved with adding it.

Check the DIY section above for info on how to get the dash fascia off. There's plenty of other good info as well.

Definitely a direct swap though, I did it too.

The DIY section with pics was of great help in getting the dash facia off. It wasn't that hard. In total it took me about 15 minutes. Works great. I'm not an audiophile I just wanted the ability to play cds in my car. I'm quite happy with it for a cheap stock unit. I know cruise can be added but since I don't do much highway driving right now it's not worth the trouble. If my situation changes & I get stuck driving more than an hour on the highway I'd consider it. I usually keep my foot on the pedal most of the time anyway.
