I currently have a Dell 4300 1.7 ghz

Intel's 845 chipset and 256MB of standard PC133 SDRAM

I want to upgrade to a faster more stable computer.
I want a minimun of 800FBS.

What do I need to upgrade to acomplish this?

Keep it cheap please

Go to newegg.com or pricewatch.com and get a new processor, you can handle 512+ meg of ram.

You have front side cache, so it'll be really quick with a ghz or faster and at least 512m of ram.

shawn :)

How cheap are you looking? Are you partial to Intel processors, or are you willing to use AMD? Basically you'll need new motherboard, processor, RAM. You will re-use components of the dell, such as disk drives and components like your modem/network card (if they're not built-in to the new mobo). Do you have a video card, or do you use integrated graphics on your motherboard (may be cost influencing).

What is it you want the computer for? 3d modeling/games type stuff, or just internet surfing and word?

I personally use newegg.com, for your price range of $500.00

AMD Athlon XP 2700+, 333MHz FSB, 256K Cache Processor - Retail $102.00 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-342&depa=1)
ABIT "NF7-M" nForce2 IGP Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU - Retail $92.00 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-127-150&depa=1)
Crucial 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-2700 - OEM $68.67 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-485&depa=1)

Then pick a ATX Case with/without power supply. Put your old Hardrive in it and the old IDE cables and you got a running system for less than you wanna spend.

For the price I would say it is fine but, I would try to find out what Ram Manufacturer they use and what Mother Board Manufacturer they use otherwise for that price its a really good deal but like I said they could have the good processor and the rest could be crap and be worthless.

Although the specs make it sound good, it's probably the cheapest crap they can put in a box. Generic memory, off-brand parts, etc. As you stated you wanted a 'stable' system, I would not buy one off ebay.

If you're going with an AMD based computer, I'd recommend the Athlon 64 processor. The Athlon XP processor is good, but for the future, 64 bit processors are going to take over.

Here's a quick pick from me:
Athon 64 3000+ socket 939
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-501&depa=1

Abit AV8 K8T800
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-127-181&depa=1

512MB Crucial PC3200
http://www.newegg.com/app/SearchProductResult.asp?Submit=Go&DEPA=0

ATI Radeon 9600 (lot of other options though)
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-289&depa=1

Total of above parts = $417 + about $20 for shipping.

Add in a case and power supply of your choice and you're still under the $500 mark, using good, quality, reliable name-brand parts.

Of course, if you're partial to intel, then the above option isn't for you.

Motherboards are often overlooked, you mention that you want something more stable. In this case I would urge you to choose a good mobo. My personnal favorite is ASUS but I would also look at MSI and Abit.

Your cheapest upgrade right now would be just a new P4 processor (2.8 FSB 533) and 256M more megs of sdram or switch to 512 DDR and be ready for next upgrade(if your mobo supports it)

Otherwise you need:
RAM
Mobo
P4 or AMD
VGA card if your current one is onboard
Soundcard if yours is onboard
New case if yours is too much Dell proprietary (sp?)

Again, your cheapest option is ram and processor for the Dell. What kind of stability problems do you have?

I personally like Nvidia Video Cards, in my computer now I have the 5900XT and it is awesome, it was $180.00 for your budget I would either stick with onboard which is fine and works, but I would go for something under $100.00 maby a Nvidia Geforce FX 5200.

I don't know if you need to upgrade your videocard or not, but your best bang for the buck would be the Nvidia 6600GT. This week there's a decent sale at Worst Buy for the 6600GT OC. It's $229.99 plus there's a $30 mail in rebate. And if you have a Best Buy reward zone card, that'll be another $7.66 (in BB coupon) good for future purchases.

The only thing is that this videocard is for the PCI-Express slot, but if you have to get a new mobo anyway, you might as well get one w/ the pci-express slot.

I doubt thats what he wants becuase that is half his budget.
