I've always been a fan of the GTI/Golf. They're one of the best looking hatches in my opinion. The new ones look pretty good too although it hasn't grown on me as the current styling. I love how there's a huge aftermarket. VW's have never been known for their reliability though. I think the Evo RS or the WRX is more bang for the buck if you compared it to a VR6. Even the Evo MR and STi is more bang for the buck than the R32.

Reliability wise, European cars do not rank very high and of all the European carmakers who sell their cars in the U.S., VW ranks as one of the worst. One of the worst cars to own in 2004 was the Toureg. Still the best looking SUV in my opinion.

As for the comment about VW drivers being faggots and retards, I can see where he's coming from. Most of the people that I see driving VW's are young spoiled white girls with a ROXY sticker in the rear windshield and fruity or metrosexual guys. If you look back at the 80's, you'll remember what type of people drove the VW Cabriolet. To me VW's are more of a fashion statement or a fad. Their cars are overpriced and anyone smart enough to do research to get the most out of their money and have a reliable car know better than to go with VW. I have to admit that asthetically they do make nice looking cars.

Surprisingly, in some countries VW are the best selling cars. For example you would think that a Japanese or some Asian manufacturer would be the best selling car in China, but VW are actually the best sellers there due to how cheap the parts are.

Some people will tell you how reliable their VW is and how they have an old bug that's still running, but like I explained earlier there's a strong VW following. These are the enthusiasts that keeps the brand alive. Most of the old bugs you see running today have been restored. With the time, dedication, and money any car can be restored, especially if you have a lot of parts to pick from the junk yard. The VW brand reminds me a lot of the Apple brand. Overall they make a small niche, but despite their low numbers, they have very dedicated followers.

And if you don't agree with the statement that I've made about VW's reliability, just look around the next time you go out for a drive. Compare how many VW's from the 80's - mid 90's you see still on the road to the amount of Honda's and Toyota's from the same years. Honda and Toyota don't sell more cars than VW's just by coincidence.

It would have to be new so it wont be

The Volkswagen R32 is no longer available. A limited quantity of this European road burner was sent to the U.S. specifically for high-performance enthusiasts. Drivers looking for amped-up power in a compact package found it in this little speedster. With a powerful V6 engine, the R32 held the soul of drag racer. But don't worry. Volkswagen has plenty of engine options to scratch your performance itch.
:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

the 1.8T would be

22,445

and the vr6

25,740

so I'm probably looking at 19K if not less, I might trade the Passport for it soon as I get a steady job, so thats at least 5K down

This is being typed by someone who...owns a hyundai? what?

I didn't get a Hyundai for it's reliability...if I did I would have bought a Honda, Toyota, or Suburu. I bought a Hyundai because it was affordable, came with more standard options, and it had a 10 year warranty. When you don't have much money, it's nice to know that you have one of the best warranty in the business to back up the car.

I'm sure you weren't sold on your Hyundai for it's reliability rating also. Even if I were to buy my car based on that reason, the way Hyundai have improved I'd trust their cars more than VW's.

My friend got a black VR6 last summer, but he was conflicted. If he got the 1.8T for less money he could've got the Powerchip and gained something ridiculous, like 40hp. If he got the Powerchip on the VR6 his gain was only in the 20hp range. He said there were a lot more mods you can do to the 1.8T but in the end he'd just be beating on 4cyl. engine. He went with the VR6 because he felt it was a strong V6 with good horsepower. The interior is so nice and a black car w/ black leather interior and all the chrome accents on the inside, uh, heaven.

I gotta admit, reliability ratings be damned, I love the VW Golf! Good looking, great interior, and superior fit and finish. I came so close to buying a silver 4 door TDI Golf when I was looking for my Elantra, but the Golf was several thousand dollars more expensive, and had almost no remaining warranty. I loved that car though. The deisel is a bit noisy and when stock, isn't any faster than our cars, but the performance tuning potential on the turbodeisel is huge. They're torqe monsters to begin with, and being direct-injected and turbocharged, just some ECU retuning can make HUGE gains. 48 miles per gallon sure would be a nice bonus, too. :D

Wil
03-26-2005, 02:42 PM
I had a Golf TDI before I bought the Elantra. It was a great car, but if you buy a VW get ready for $1000 repair bills every few months after the warranty runs out. 4 to 5 week stays at the garage are not out of the question either.

That's the reason I now have the Elantra.

My thoughts...

VW are nice looking cars, my friend (and as of today, roommate) has a 2001 Jetta 1.8T Wolfsburg edition (I'm sure most people know by now). It's a really nice car. The 1.8T's are easily chipped (legit chips, not eBay chips) and can gain up to 45 HP on just the stock engine. He has a reprogrammed chip and a CAI, lowered on Bilstein struts and H&R springs, and a thicker rear sway bar, it's a very nice car. Quick, not super fast, but quick and handles extremely well.

My thoughts, the R32 is amazing. I'd definitely take it over the Evo, but not over the STi. They were only 2004 models though, so no new ones, plus, they are about $32,000 new I think. I think a must with GTIs and Golfs is to swap for a Jetta front end, I think "JTIs" look perfect. Plus, even if you didn't get aftermarket wheels, there are a LOT of good looking VW OEM wheels.

The new ones look even better, can't wait until they show up over here.

I'd be worried about reliability from VW though, they are constantly rated at the bottom (like already pointed out).

As for VW's being for gay people or retards... wtf? That might be one of the more thoughtless posts in EXD history.

I think his point didn't come across correctly. I don't necessarily agree with him wholeheartedly, but I sorta understand where he's coming from with that comment.

I mean, how many car manufacturers out there put a vase in their car to hold a flower? An exterior-color coordinating interior? Or exterior-color coordinating rims? Or daisy rims? If those examples are not gay I don't know what is. Nothing wrong with being gay but I think that's why he made that statement.

I like the Golf. Although being more economical & less performance oriented I'd love to have a TDI model with a manual transmission. I see tons of those things with 200-300k miles on them. They get awesome gas mileage too.

My first car was a '76 Chrysler Cordoba.
http://automobileart.homestead.com/files/75cordoba.jpg
I bought it in 1993. I couldn't take it for an oil change without having to drop $350 for everything else that was wrong with it each time.

I have had at least 8 friends over the past couple years who have bought or leased VWs brand new. NOT ONE of them has ever gone in for service without paying more per visit than I did for the old Cordoba.

The difference is that (a) the Chrysler had a right to cost that much and (b) if you want horsepower, no VW will give you what you get from a 400 with a 4-barrel carb.

(I really have no point to this, I just like talking about Zeus, and I've see many bad things come out of the VW factories.)

Ohhhhh, rich corinthian leather! ;)

I like VWs--don't care too much for the styling of the new Jetta though. But the Golf is nice, though I'd definately wait for the new one next year. The R32 is a bad-*** car, more in the vein of MB's AMGs than a WRX or STI. I'd buy one if I had the money; but, then again, I'd rather buy the new 1 series BMW when it comes out.

BlackElantraGT

Nerraux, I'm not a big fan of American cars, especially from the 70's...but that car is bad *** man. I can picture you with your rat face wearing a hat with a feather. That car is just PIMP! =)

And I don't know about rating the R32 along the lines of the MB AMGs... I think the R32 competes more with the Evo's and STi's. I wouldn't consider the R32 as being a luxurious sports coupe.

Well, I said the AMG comment because the R32 is more a grand tourer--it's made to go fast, quietly and in German style. The WRX and STI are both pure hard-edged sports cars--loud and unforgiving. Just a different approach to speed. :)

BlackElantraGT

Ahh I see your thinking. I've never driven the R32 and I've only seen one around here (which was parked), but if they sound like any of the souped up GTI's and Golf's, I don't know if I would call that quiet.

*Scott*, thanks for understanding my comments. I hope that most people realize that it wasn't a personal attack against you or Wil. I could care less what someone's preference is. I was just trying to possibly articulate on the other guy's comments about "fags and retards." It's just my opinion only that the VW brand seems to cater to a more feminine clientele (sp?) and around here where I'm from, the most popular VW model is the new Bug, which generally are driven by females. If someone wants a vase in their car that's great you have one built-in for you but for most men I think that would be a bit too feminine.

It's like me (an Asian guy) rolling through Compton in a black Escalade with huge chrome wheels bumping loud rap music and throwing the westside sign with my hand out of the driver's side window. Some people may look cool in it but I would just look wrong.

I've actually seen 2 R32s on the road since this post, and OMG THEY ARE A BEAST!

The first one I saw was a modified kitted turbocharged Red R32, and it was racing a modified srt-4 (which by the way, the R32 won) on the NJ turnpike. Doing about 120.

The second one I saw was blue and stock, doing about 90, and OMFG it was so beautiful I wanted one!

How are you sure it was a real R32? They may have just done an R32 conversion because mainly the differences are cosmetic on the outside. Most V6's that are turbo'd usually have a twin/bi turbo set up and I would think that would require a bit of modification and tuning expertise.
