View Full Version : Daylight running lights
I have a 2004 Elantra GT and was wondering if there is an easy way to activate the daylight running lights as used in Canada and other countries. The dealer doesn't know or won't tell me. I also noted that the owners manual eludes to an automatic A/C control option and the same is listed for the GT as standard on 2004/2005 Elantras on the Kelly Blue Book website. The dealer has no info on this. Was this a factory option in some areas/countries? TIA

Welcome to the site Ned.
I don't think anyone has looked into the DRL's in America, it should be an easy enough job though, I'm sure someone has the answer.
As for auto CC, it's a Korean option for the Elantra. We've been considering this mod on and off since this site started. It can be done, but most people think it would be expensive, with wiring being fairly difficult, and location of temp sensors being a problem.
We did manage to get the Korean Tiburon multigauges working, so getting the auto CC might next.

I think Daylight Running Lights are a great idea. I drive with my lights on all the time.
I actually never turn the switch off since the lights won't stay on after the key is removed from the ignition. Aside from bulb life, the only other problem that might be encountered is if for some reason you go thru the passenger side to use the key in the ignition (the parking lights won't go off because the driver's door was not opened).
Welcome to the forum. There are some great personalities here. I find it interesting how one little car can bring together so many different types of people (age, sex, etc...)

If you were feeling particularly spunky, you could do this...

:abovelol: HA!!! I did that once at work to close the sunroof! Luckily someone told me my lights were on before the battery died. Funny you should mention that!
Hi Ned, hope you enjoy your experience here.
you mean having the low beams on at all times? Just get the switched power at the light or the switch and connect it to a battery switched power, so whenever the car is on the lights are one. simple. What would be even better is to get a light meter and mount it on the dash and have it turn the lights on automatically at night ;)

Uh, I'm no Jeneeus or nothin, but it seems to me that having the lights turn on only at night be the opposite of what Ned wanted?
well yeah, but I already answered that in the first part of the post, just voicing another idea....

I HATE the cars that do that. Rented an Alero in Seattle with automatic headlights. You couldn't even do it manually if you wanted. We went under a bridge and they turned on for .5 sec. Then, on a foggyish day, it was hard to see but apparently not dark enough to turn the lights on. Stupid.

I'm not as bright as my high beams, but my ' 03 car does that already as long as I dont' turn the lights off by the switch. The lights go off when the key is removed from the ignition and the parking lights go off when the Driver's door is opened.

I'm guessing you have your light SWITCHED ON all the time. Sed's suggestion would turn on the light while the switch is off.
In a sense they are same since they get the job done. but if you wanna be really anal about it, Sed's idea would be closer to DRL though since you the lights are technically 'off' :D
Either way it will work, but you wouldn't have to worry about draining the battery if you inadvertantly open any door but the drivers door. You could also turn the lights on from the switch to use the high beams, since the high beams wouldn't go on if you clickked the multifunction switch foward with my idea, since the lights aren't technically on as far as the car is concerned...

Don't know if this was mentioned... but my b/f has an 03 tib, and ordered the auto light switch from Korea.... the kit came with another full switch and a little sensor that is placed inside this little vut out in front of the passanger side seat right next to the window... he is actually contacting the guy he ordered it from to see if there is one for my car (I can let you guys know what comes of it...)... considering all he had to do was get the factory part from Korea, I would not see why we could not do the same... being this option is avialable in Korea... only down fall, as someone stated is that when you go under a tunnel or even small brigde, the lights go on then off once light is shown again.... but it is really nice add on, and took him litterally all of 5 minutes to instal if you know how to take the dash etc off the replace the switch....
