white gum eraser...meguires (?) back to black....
Taping works, but you can also apply the back to black or other trim detailing product to the trim first. This will protect the trim from the wax if it gets on it.

I got one of the polymer car waxes on by GT's black trim, too. Back-to-Black worked for a while; but after a month or so the wax started to show through again.
I've seen fixes like peanut butter, toothbrushes, cooking oil, etc. recommended. Those might work on a carnauba-type wax, but not on the polymer waxes!
The way I got rid of it was to take a paper towel and rub really hard on the wax spots. I think it worked because it was able to rub off the surface wax and get in to the "nooks and crannies" in the rough plastic to get at the wax there. That method also worked on the rubber mud flaps. After ~1 minute of rubbing per area, no more wax residue!
While a toothbrush didn't work for me, I thought that a good fine & stiff-bristle brush might work well, too, if I'd had one to try. I don't intend to put wax on my trim again just to find out, though!

Back to Black works but the wax will still be on the molding - it only covers it up I find.....use an engine degreaser - I have a purple bottle of Castrol and it worked mint.....you can also try bug/tar remover, toothbrush and toothpaste or even peanut butter/oil works I hear.

Brake cleaner will take it off too...and your clearcoat, paint, basically everything on top of the sheet metal!

Exactly. Kerosene also works as a last resort, just make sure you wash the residue off within 2-3 minutes or the paint will just fade away.

K, again, white gum eraser works perfect. Don't believe? spend $1 and get one then try it. Then no more need for the chemicals. Swear to god it works. Seriously. Believe me yet? lol

there's also some stuff called black jack. it will work. only prob is it's extremely hard to find. even on the internet. look around for it. it'll take off years of wax on trim and vinyl.

okay...so i washed my car today...and broke out the eagle one tire spray with the applicator....and i dropped it on the matte black spoiler on the hatch....and no sh!t....it turned black again...so i rub it on just to see what happened...and vala!! it was the deepest black i had seen it!! i finished the wing and did the moldings....it was mad easy!! so you have wax on your moldings like i did or they just look a little faded...try this it works extremely well!! :)

Yea, tire cleaner/shine works good on all the plastic. It's not permanent though, and sometimes leaves a greasy feeling on the plastic after application... i use it on black stuff though.

Armorall protectant works good also

Armorall is one of the worst products you can use on a car. The problem with it is it contains silicon. When you apply it to plastic, it seals the pores, causing them to dry up, and eventually crack. Now you know why all of the older cars always have cracked dashes, it's not cause they were cheaply made.

yeah armor all is only good for the dash....the synthetic ones anyway....i have never had a problem with it on a dash...

I finally got my car back from the body shop last weekend. It's all fixed from my accident and the shop also detailed my entire car for me. Vacuumed, washed and waxed. It was beautiful. It rained in the NY area the last few days and today I noticed there is wax residue on my molding. I remember reading another post about how it is important you do not get Meguir's wax on your molding cause it will not come off. I don't know what kind of wax they used but it's definitely showing on my molding.
So why is this only becoming visible after a week? Is it indeed the rain that's the cause?
Is there a way to get this garbage off my molding? I haven't tried anything yet, asking advice first. thanks.

You can use a small black bristled paint brush and dab it on the waxed molding. This will not didcolor of chip/gring away at your moldings. This bristles simply reach down into the crevesses of the molding where rags can't reach and it pushes it out. Simple!

I set it up for them to look at it when I go in to have my oil changed next week, since it's been like that since I bought it.

I waxed the GT the other day, and noticed alot of wax ended up on the side moldings. i read that using tire shine will clean the molding of the wax, and make it shine nice. i tried it and it works great. so anyone with a gt, if you get wax on your side moldings, or just want to clean em, use tire shine. :D

Yeah I have tried alot of different cleaners, but never Tireshine. I have been told by several shops that any type of wax that has carnuba in it, will do this to the side moldings. I still have YET To get the wax out after lil over a year now. I will try this. I was just abuot to spend $300 to have all my moldings removed, and have them painted to match the car, which I think I will just save the money now, and get that in the future. Thanks for the TIP!

I would have to agree on the Back to Black - Mothers. I've used it on previous vehicles and my new Elantra GT.
It is awesome for black molding.
I avoid contact on the side moldings when waxing and use kitten brand vinyl and plastic protectant. I got these sweet applicator things from a cheapo shop, they are mainly for the tyres but I find they work great to apply the protectant on the moldings after I wax the car. The stuff goes on the molding and not on the paint.

I started reading that and thought you said that you use a kitten... :abovelol:
they are nice and soft though...... gotta watch out for those razor sharp claws... they can scratch the paint.....
Kinky uses a feather, weird uses the whole chicken! I actually just polished my car and got that stuff in my eye, its debilitating to say the least.

I know this is not directly answering the post, but, I use this stuff found at Walmart and other auto stores, to wax my present and last car (it was 8 years old and the finish looked like glass). It's called Eagle One Wax-As-U Dry. I wash the car, and as I'm drying, I spray the wax on and wax/dry the car up to a glass-like finish every time. The reason I bring it up is that you can spray it on the trim or front grill and it stays BLACK. So if you see the product on the shelf give it a shot. it's under $5 and gives around 12 waxes. The only drawback to the product is that you need to use it regularly as it probably wouldn't stay on for 6 months. But I've been using it on cars for 3 years and find it to be a big work saver, and I have no issues with the black molding.

Eagle One Wax-As-U-Dry is a quick detailer; never mind six months, that stuff disappears after the next car wash as it's only used for touch-up jobs... There are a couple of waxes there that won't stain the black side mouldings, P21S being one of them (P21S Description on eshine.ca (http://www.eshine.ca/proddetail.php?prod=P21SCarnauba&cat=11) ) Hope this helps

Well I had this very same problem and, living where I do, I can't get any fancy products to remove it. I tried the white gum eraser and it worked perfectly. So well in fact that I wondered why there aren't people repackaging erasers and selling them as proffesional grade wax removers. :)

Yeah, I agree 100% on the white eraser.... it works wonders! However, I think I will put masking tape next time I wax the car, I'll save some time this way.

What I've found is that chemicals such as Black Jack are only a cover up. The first time a rain comes or the car is washed again, the wax comes back through. I used bug and tar remover, a toothbrush, and elbow grease to remove it off of mine. I then followed up with Windex to clean off the excess bug and tar remover. Takes some time and effort, but it works.

I just paint the front molding with dull color black it came out nice. I will take some more picture tomorrow. Took me some time to tape all the edges and yellow light on the side though, but side doors should be easy.

nice way of masking. the pics look dark, its hard to see the actual color, but it looks good.
i spray on the NXT wax from mag and it doesnt stain my molding but I got tons of **** on my molding from awhile ago I still cant get off. Back to black only works alittle bit plus it stays on the paint when you accidently get it on it for months unless I wash it about 10-20 times (discolors paint blah blah takes alot of scrubbing) I'v also tryed tar remover, dish washer stuff, wd-40 all that good stuff no go still

The eraser trick does work, but since I ran out of eraser pretty quick, I had to get resourceful and used a scotch-brite kitchen sponge. The abrasive, green side, works well but you have to be very careful not to scratch the paint. I cut the sponge in many 1/2"x1/2" sections and applied moderate pressure on the molding.

Sorry guys im at school and didnt have time to read through the whole post but i found a synthetic wax made by turtle wax called ice. its a little pricey at about 16$ a bottle but its lasts a very long time and you can use it on all surfaces except glass and it protects the rubber and plastic trims as well as shine them.

Well, as a pro detailer I'm going to give this a try because I always like to see what developments have been made in consumer products vs. professional products.

I tried Mother's Back-to-Black, which is a different product I think than the one mentioned earlier. It seems essentially like a thicker, richer Armor-All kind of liquid. Just for the heck of it I used it on my dash, steering wheel, console, shifter and E-brake handle. A very rich, deep, but soft shine.
It seemed to work okay on the body side molding for getting the wax marks off, but it's too early to tell if the wax will show through again.

I use this on my moldings and it keeps them shining for about a week (unless it rains) but then again I have no wax on my moldings.

Has anybody tried the "peanut butter method" of cleaning wax off the moldings yet?
mlumz
04-12-2006, 12:54 AM
please elaborate on the peanut butter method? I'm curious. But someone also said the white erasers people use for school are suppose to be pretty good.
I like mothers back to black but as stated above it only lasts for like 1 week before wax begins to show and if you do highway or it rains the wax is done.

Now it's been 8 month that I have some white old wax thing on my molding.
I tried WD-40 but didn't work. Any other suggestion plz?
Theres a couple things you can use.
1) Rain vision
2) Goof-off
3) Armor-All tire foam
After you take off the wax armor all it, or even better use tire shine. I detail cars daily and it works every time. Spray rain vision or rain x on a rag and rub it on the molding, after that use the armor all tire foam, if its still there use high shine.
If its STILL bad theres a couple more solutions, you could use a plastic carpet brush with a Leather & Plastic cleaner, then use a clear spray paint.
IF THAT wont work, clay it, sand it, black touch up paint.
I forgot to tell you to use Tar-OFF, tar off has kersone so its strong enough to take off anything, yet it has conditioning chemicals to protect the paint.

I am a strong supporter of the eraser method, its cheap, fast and easy. It took about 15 mins to do all the moldings and you can do this sitting down. I would say try this first before going on to other techniques.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser!
I've used the same thing. extremely cheap, and works wonders.
it's also useful on your rims
but be careful with it on your paint or shiney/polished parts - it's pretty abrasive when you use pressure and will remove the clear coat really quick.

saturn

pretty much anywhere. I got mine at kroger (local grocery store) -- I bet wal-mart has them, if you live out in the middle of nowhere...
also note; for me it wasn't as easy as clean and wipe with a wet rag.... the residue will dry pretty fast and leave a cloudy water stain -- I had to wash the car around the trim to get it completely clean... but the mr. clean erasers definitely get rid of the salt and wax!

aright ill have to see about picking some up
saturn
04-18-2007, 02:18 PM
they come in a box of 2 (at least mine did) so pick up 2 boxes (they're cheap, 1 or 2 bucks). I only needed 1 sponge, but they're nice for other things around the house as well as kids toys, etc.
you'll need to get them pretty wet and foamy to be effective (use a bucket, treat it like a sponge). don't be freaked out - they tend to wear down pretty fast. if it turns grey, rinse it out... otherwise you end up smearing cloudy stuff.
it's easiest to go up and down in sections on the trim. put some elbow grease into it but be CAREFUL to NOT rub your paintjob...
also don't miss that triangular plastic section behind the rear windows on the hatchback.
