ok. my first DIY so lemme know if I should fix anything

tools needed :

T-40 socket. (6 pointed star)
7/8" socket
1/2" extension (will make it easier, but can be done without)
Flat head screw driver

time- Less than 1 hour (took me 1:20, but i had to run to the store for the socket and spent 10 minutes soldering wires i messed up)

Step 1
DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!. i disconnected both positive and negative to make sure it was disconnectd. do not avoid this. you DO NOT want an airbag going off in your face. hit the brake pedal a couple times to make sure all electricity is gone.

Step 2
On each side of the steering wheel there are 2 covers. Drivers side is a small circle. take a screw driver and pop it off. Right side is around the cruise control switch. you can pop it off with a screwdriver or your finger if it fits.

once you get the covers off, you will see the 6 point star bolts. Use the T-40 socket you got. note - these will NOT come out. there is a piece that holds them in so just unscrew them until theyre loose.

Step 3
Pull airbag off steering wheel. there will be 2 wires going to it. The wires wrapped in yellow, going to the center of the airbag are for the horn. READ carefully here - it will look like the wires come out of the harness they are in. THEY DONT! all you need to do, is take your screwdriver and pry up on the whole piece. it plugs in to the back of the airbag. just stick it under and pry up. it comes off easy. the other wire comes out of the harness at the top. it is held in by a tab, you just have to press the tab in and pull out the wire. the airbag will now come out.

http://www.nitrousworld.com/pictures/PICT2885.JPG

Step 4
Take the 7/8" socket and remove the bolt on the center of the wheel. you will want to put the wheel to where it is perfectly center before you take it off, so the new wheel isnt crooked while youre going straight. once you get the bolt off. hit the wheel from the back forward and it will come loose. take the wheel off.

http://www.nitrousworld.com/pictures/PICT2886.JPG

Step 5
Put Tiburon wheel on. try to make sure it is straight (or in the same position) as the Elantra wheel you just took off. plug in the wire to the horn (it will seem upside down. the wire will come up) and plug in the wire from the wheel into the harness. put center bolt and lock washer on, and tighten down

Step 6
once the airbag is in place, tighten the 6 point star bolts on each side. make sure airbag/horn is not loose.

Step 7
go out and start pimpin the Tiburon wheel in the Elantra!

*problems i had
1. had to make a run to the store for the right size socket. its a T-40. theyre 2-5$ depending on where you go
2. the wires for the horn. DO NOT try to take the wires out. i did this, broke both wires and spent 10 min soldering them back to where they broke from. just pry the whole harness away from the airbag/horn

compared to stock wheel it feels a little fatter. im pretty sure it is too, caus i hanged/hung the light on the stock wheel and it went on easily, tib wheel it was a little tighter.

dave, if you want one, there is a guy selling one on NT for like 200$ or so w/ airbag. VERY cheap seeing that its probably 1,000+ from the dealer. if you want to bring it to me ill install it. maybe get another small meet at my place and save the shop for a big meet this summer.

Good job Evan. Looks nice, wish the stuff I had coming from Canada was quicker. Damm it was shipped on 3/30. Enjoy the new wheel and let get you turbo'd.

If it were a few months from now (after house is closed on) I would have already bought that tib steering wheel. Stupid having to wait. Looks great. It would go perfectly with the new door upholstry I'm doing. (and tib seats when I get to those).

Nice work Evan. I'll add this (and some of the other DIY's) to the DIY page when I get a chance.

You didn't by chance happen to compare each airbag (without the front plastic piece) and take pics did you? I'm still trying to figure out 100% if the Elantra airbag will work with the Tib wheel.

evan938
04-12-2005, 10:02 PM
i did not compare the airbags because i did not want to take everything apart. heres the thing though. if you see an "airbag" for sale on ebay or whatnot, its usually gonna still be attached in the horn. i dont think someone is gonna take out just the bag to sell it. theyll probably sell it w/ the horn. as you can see, the elantra/tib horn/airbag arent close to being the same shape.

Great job man it looks sweet in the elantra!!! will this void any saftey warranty by swaping these parts out???

evan938
04-13-2005, 01:59 PM
i would hope not. im sure if i was in a tib, id be sitting just as close to the wheel as in an elantra. OEM part, but im sure hyundai would have something to say if i get in a wreck and it doesnt deploy

evan938
04-20-2005, 10:23 PM
im hoping it will work. all connections fit the same. wheel doesnt have grooves in it for fingers on tib wheel. feels a lot better. wheel is a little fatter too so theres more to grip

I have a question.

I have a 2006 Kia Spectra5 and i am trying to install this wheel in my car. When i took the airbag off I noticed that it has 2 wires going to the back of the airbag. Both look like the yellow wire/connector pictured in the DIY but one is green. Does anyone know what this is?

I suppose this wheel may not fit in my car afterall but I wanna make sure.

I'll try to take some pics.

Yes, I have cruise controll on my wheel but that is a separate control and wire. On the DIY where the author says that the yellow wire is for the horn, I think he means airbag. Yellow is always airbag.

I havent had a chance to take any pictures because of the huge storm we have been having. A little cold to work on a car with no garage :)

I will get some soon though.

Stay Tuned!

here is a picture of what the back of a spectra wheel looks like:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v94/HIBIZL/spectraairbag.jpg
and here is a picture of the back of teh tiburon bag.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v94/HIBIZL/05_tiburon_drvr.jpg

I've checked and all tiburon bags only have one sensor wire so it looks like i'm out of luck. Anyone wanna buy my tiburon wheel?
