I asked my dealer mechanic today (was getting an oil change) if he had any reports of K&N filters making any difference.
He told me that, even though there is an increase in airflow compared to the stock filter, the MAF would adjust it and the flow of air to the engine would be the same.
Is he right or talking outta his a*ss?

The MAF is just a sensor that reads the amount of air coming into the intake. The only thing that this sensor does is read the amount of air coming in and the ecu controls the amount of fuel to be mixed with it. The MAF can't adjust the amount of air coming in, and if I'm not mistaken, when the MAF senses more air coming into the enginge, the ECU pours more fuel to keep the proper Air/Fuel ratio which gives you your HP increase. I'm sure there are people on this site who can help you more than me, but I think that those are the basics.

2fstfru is correct ... the MAF only meters the air volume intake so the computer can adjust the fuel delivery appropriately. More air = more fuel ... so, you do get better performance, but you burn more fuel.

I'm surprised a mechanic wouldn't know that.

I've got a K&N Filter in place of my stock air filter and am quite pleased with it. $45 but it will outlast the car!

K&N filter = Loss of dealer $$$ in replacement stock air filters. That might explain something.

I've had a K&N panel filter in my 2002 since about 3 months after getting the car. I didn't notice a difference then, but I also never need to replace it, just clean it off with the appropriate products.

There are some Mechanics out there that just work on cars for the money, not for the pleasure of it. Which means they don't know any more than how to fix a stock, strait from the factory, car; and will never learn more than they have to, to do it.

It saddens me when I can go into a shop and know more than the guy working on my car does, and I'm no mechanic.

the shop I go to, is a mechanic I knew from high school....and he still owns a Silver 1970-71 Buick Skylark GS....Sweet car.

anyone else have one of these? everyone above is sayin it uses more fuel, so thats no good. i thought a better intake was better on MPG? anyway, im thinkin about gettin on of these for my b-day, but is it worth it? im not getting a CAI, or even SRI..already tried to convince my parents. so is this the best choice? heres the link the the site

I dunno- when I put my intake on, I got an increase in mileage, which was good.

If you use the extra power that the intake gives you, you will use more gas, killing your fuel mileage. The reason that intakes and exhausts give better mileage is that you have to do less work to take in and push out air, meaning that you need to use less power to do so. This means that when you're cruising, you will get better mileage.

I have one and noticed and increase in MPG. Here is where I bought mine:

AJ USA (http://www.ajusa.com/cgi-bin/knfilters/products?ajr_skey=b930f132a14a8edc0b984f2da2bb5f8d )

Several others have bought them from AJ USA too. This is my fourth one for four different vehicles. Service (http://www.elantraxd.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6212) is good too.

thats what i figured. i guess if i had 500 hp, i could tap the pedal and go much further idleing than holding it down now...I'm just gunna go to autozone and pick one up if they have em.

I had a K&N filter on my Montero Sport and I did a few HP gain but did also gain in MPG. I'm gonna get one for my 05 Elantra GT soon. AJ USA is a good sight that is where i got mine from (shipping is free so the filter costs around $25-30). Don't forget to get the recharge kit too so you can keep the filter clean.

HI guys! New here.

Just wanted to share my 2 cents worth on K&N.

after much research. I purchased the drop in filter (the first and maybe the last mod i do for my elantra).

I heard all the pros and cons, especially the part about K&N not being able to filter in smaller particles.

I came across an article i think it was a "transworld auto sport" report about KN's wherein they did a product review. microscopically, the cloth material extends out and does create a mesh that traps dirt so what we see as little holes are there, but there are little filaments that we dont see. to make a long story short the article gives the filter good reviews. i am also aware of a study that showed KN being really sucky. that scared me, but i was thinking. would Transworld auto sport as an organization tarnish their name by giving a false review. and K&N has been around for years.

Overall, i think mods like this is like life. you take risk. one risk works for other people, for others well...

One thing I find though that in really really really dusty conditions/area, maybe this aint the right filter for you. but where i live, there isnt much dirt.

but to be sure, i just installed it last week. and the season here calls for a lot of rain so that helps wash away the dirt from the road. I plan to wash my filter late spring, this way, the streets wont be so dirty (rain), then winter, then fall, by summer where its humid, smoggy, and dirty, the KN would have enough larger "dirt" trapped that these would help trap the smaller dirt particles.

i think one way of checking if there is any dirt passing through the filter is wiping the intake above the filter. i done this, and its clean, not even a trace of the filter oil that they said could affect the MAF.
so i think the filter is doing its job.

after popping this filter in i did notice a slightly louder engine roar, my mileage imporved as well.

p.s. i love this site, very informative. keep it up people!

yea, i noticed a bit of a deeper sound. performance may be increased a bit, but nothing noticeable. MPG is the same for me so far though. its not like a CAI where the filter is directly exposed to oncoming air and dirt. its in a fairly enclosed box, which also keeps alot of dirt out, so theres no reason to be worried about that, plus this shouldnt void your warranty, so if someone were to happen, hyundai should fix it under warranty.
