View Full Version : Can you talk me out of a 04 Tibby GT 6 speed?

Well, can you?
I have an xd 5 spd but ever since I drove the dodge srt4, I'm looking for more big time hp. Hyundai is having a $2,000 rebate on any left over new 2004 Tiburons. I know I would take a hit on my xd, but the rebate almost makes up for it.
I do like the styling on the Tiburon better than the srt4, and the xd. I have yet to test drive a new Tiburon on dry streets - I hope to do so this weekend. I'll have a better idea on performance then.
Thoughts - Oh XD brothers and sisters?

If you are getting a new car, get the SRT-4. I love Hyundai, but it seems like what you are looking for can't be found in an Elantra or Tiburon.
Either keep the XD or get the SRT-4. That's the bottom line, because SuperGLS said so.

Wody check insurance... those SRT-4's might be quick.. but the insurance companies know this too... unless thats not a factor

There are plenty of cars I'd get before the GK. If you're gonna upgrade, I'd get something with RWD or AWD. :)

, I'm looking for more big time hp.
Then why are you considering the tib?
HP vs. Money = Mustang GT, (IMHO).

Wow - That did not take long for replies!
BlackDiamond - I called my insurance co. (Geico) with a vin# on a SRT4 - the operator said "2004 Neon?" I said, "Yup". The increase was marginal. But maybe they would find out in time it was a SRT4 at some point, not the standard Neon - I guess that's a chance I would take. I have not called for insurance on the Tiburon.
hyelan2 - I'm not a ford mustang guy. I know there is no real logic behind this - but I'm just not. In the same way with sport bikes I go Kawasaki, or Yamaha, not Honda or Suzuki - go figure. Plus a Mustang GT is going to put me over $25,000 - w/ a hit on my trade is, this will not work.
I will say that I actully prefer my xd over the new Tib in the rain. But I think that is just the stock tires. I switched all 4 of mine on the xd over to kumho.
I'm communitng more with my new job - about 20 miles one way. Most of this is highway. I actully have been very happy w/ the xd on my commute. I think it is a good "tool" for the commute. And its nice to get 31+ mpg.
I'm still thinking about it all. If I can get the right deal, I may go for it. Otherwise I'll keep the xd and be happy. I win either way!!!

According to many insurance companies, and kelly blue book, an SRT-4 is just a turbocharged neon...:)

4mynikka - I just don't like the WRX, but I emailed the guy with the turbo tibby - asked him if he would consider a trade plus cash on my end.

If you want a Tibby I would suggest getting a 5 speed rather than the 6. Seems you get more trouble with the 6 speed transmission.

I have a freind who owns both. The 6spd is his wifes, the 5spd is his. I like the feel of the 5spd better. More direct IMO. The 6spd is fun in its own way, lots of shifting and killer 2nd gear spinning. If I remeber right they where like .1sec between them but the 5spd wasn't as broken in at the time. I say 5spd. BTW I love driving those things.. torque owns in them.

Wdctr - Nice to hear from you. At this point its a matter of what I can find as a carry-over 2004. There is a tidal wave blue gt manual (not sure if 5 or 6 speed) that looks very nice - tidal wave seems to be rare in the new tiburon. But more and more I am leaning to the white, that almost has a porsche look to it in white. I drove a tibby gt 6 speed in the rain last week. It has good mid-range - kind of like the 2.0. And I love the 2.0. BTW - Dodge is offering no discounts what so ever on carry over 2004 srt4's.
As hyunelan said the new tibby is no match for the srt4 in power to weight. At the new tiburon forum, a member told me that a sri would add 12 whp to the GT. This seems high, but if its true this would be about a 20% bump in power/weight over the xd. That would be like having the xd with like 170 crank hp. There is the option of turboing the xd, but that will not help, will probably hurt resale value. I'm already hiting some of this with just the few mods I've done on the xd.
Evan - who built the turbo? What are you asking? A local guy builds turbos for the 2.0. He said he can do his turbo for around $2,500 installed.
BTW - I called geico. The increase for me from xd to new tibby gt will be like $4-5 per month.

If you're happy with Hyundai, stick with it. The rebates are good and you know the warranty is killer.
Don't forget the Tibby is over 300 pounds heavier than the Elantra, though. Kind of negates the additional horsepower over the Elantra ... in stock form anyway.
If you want guts, get the SRT-4 but you'll be crying when it breaks and the warranty is gone. Of course, if you throw a turbo on the Tibby, I doubt Hyundai is going to honor their warranty for engine internals. Not sure, but that's my thought.
The WRXes are TINY inside. I have two workmates who own them and I am still amazed at how cramped they are inside. Not only that, but they are heavy! They haul *** but they definitely aren't roomy. Your shoulder rests right against the "B" pillar.
It's all a matter of taste and test driving is so important. Keep us posted on what you decide! Hope you get an awesome deal on whatever you choose. Don't be shocked when any dealer offers you next to NOTHING for your Elantra. It's sad, but it's a fact with trading in a Hyundai. They are great cars, but the buying public isn't completely convinced yet.

12 hp with just an SRI??? That doesn't sound likely. I'd spend some time over on newtiburon.com and see what mods produce what power. Also, with this being your commuter car, I can't see it being a good idea to put a turbo in a tib, or buy an SRT4. You're asking for a lot of reliability commuting, out of something that won't be.
Personally, I say you've got your bikes for fun and performance, right? Keep the car that gets the job done - or go buy something with reliable power. Of course, then we're talking more $$, but you know the addage... you get what you pay for.

Guys - I just don't like Suburo's or however they are spelled. I have drive a couple and just thought they are crude cars. I will not go w/ SRX.
Evan - Yeah, that number seems high for a sri - looking at dynos posted on new tiburon, I figure that crank hp with sri would be about 190+, and with sri plus exhaust, a little over 200hp. Apparently the 2.7 liter setup is VERY restricted for air.
BTW - The Hyundai dealer said he would come close tio KBB trade in price on the xd. This is about a $3,000 hit, but like the say, the rebates more or less compensate for this.

Woody, my wife and I have been considering trading my Elantra for a Sonata recently too. Bigger car, more room, 2500 cash back, 1000 loyalty and 0% financing look mighty tempting. So I definitely understand what you're going through. But just remember that a performance car is not a very good daily driver and lacks dependability. I might suggest keep the elantra, buy a cheap car to go fast and play with. Older miata, rx7 or even a V8 stang or camaro. Something that was meant to be stupid fast. Then you can have both worlds.
hyunelan2
04-21-2005, 01:32 PM
^^^ I agree completely. [Car that was not meant to go fast] + [modifications to make it go fast] = [not a good or reliable daily driver]. If you want a toy, get a toy... but also remember that it is then your toy, and you still need a 'work car'.

Guys,
I've read your replies.
If money was the only concern, I'd keep the xd and drive as is. But this is about wants, not needs. If money was the main thing, I'd be driving an accent, or metro, etc.
The first question I asked in the new tiburon forum was about car reliability. The replys I got back either said no problems encountered, or minor gripes. I have heard at the xd forum that the transmissions are expensive to replace ($5,000 - 6,000), but I expect I will sell the tibby long before the warranty is expired. This is my personality defect to go thru cars quickly. (Don't smoke, don't drink, just go thru cars quickly.) I was kind of hopping Fordfasterr would stop by - cause I know he has both xd and new tiburon. But somewhere I think he said that he felt the xd was more fun for the money becasue it was lighter, and kind of begged to be thrashed.
Its all in a lot of IF's for me...IF the white tibby is staill available...IF I get the right trade in...IF I get the rebates they promised. I'll know more this weekend.

Woody ... you and I are the same in going through cars. I say the same ... some people waste money on cigarettes, drugs, and booze ... cars are my addiction. :D
Thankfully, internet porn is free! :jerkit:
Get the Tiburon if you like it. That's my best advice!

Yup. That's about it. I used to be the same way with bikes.
Like I say, its all in the numbers. If the numbers don't favor me, I have no problem walking away from the deal. I DO like the xd. It is a much better do it all car than the Tibby. But I guess I am in love with the new tibby body style right now.

UPDATE:
I ran my numbers based on invoice price for the new tiburon, rebates, a very optimistic trade in for my exlantra, and went to my dealer. My mind set was only to make the change if they could meet my projected best deal - my 04 xd plus $7,500 for a new 04 GT Tibby. And I told my sales guy if they could not meet that I was walking. The did their thing at the dealership and came back with my car plus $8,000 - and they thru in an "Autobutler" service plan at n/c. Done deal.
I only did the deal because I got EXACTLY the car I wanted (White new 04 GT 6 spd manual w/ EXACT options I wanted,) and I got my best projected deal. I traded my tidal wave blue xd 5 spd for the above car Saturday.
I may poke around back at this forum from time to time. If you guys don't hear from me I want to thank ALL for being such a great group of people. The forum has been real important to me, espeacailly as I was looking for work and had more time to spend on the xd.
Blessings to all. I will be posting a "test drive" impressions on the new tiburon as time permits.

Its just me. Don't try to make sense of it. I bought the elantra with the intention of keeping it a long time. At the time I bought the xd , the reviews on the new tiburon were mixed, and I did not think I could afford a new Tiburon GT. It was just over time I warmed to the new Tiburon. More and more I liked the looks of the Tiburon. I was iffy on performance until I reset the ecu on my test car. Now that I have removed the air box, and stuck on a bomz cone filter on my new tiburon, I'm happy with the performance. It does really open the response on the car quite a bit . A bigger bump than on the xd I would say.
PS - I go thru about a car a year.
