Well, I just took a weekend trip for some live continuing education to middle TN from east TN. There is a lot of elevation changes there going from the valley to the plateau, and then to the basin. Best I got before was about 35 MPG going roughly 70 (in TN east to west). That is with a K&N panel filter and slightly moddified stock intake.
I did get about 38 MPG going to Orlando last summer, and about 36 coming back, with a short stint from Atlanta back to Knoxville getting 39. And I have a GLS, so I calculate the old school way. Odometer / trip mileage reading divided by number of gallons at fillup.
Anyway, back to my weekend trip. I now have a 2¼ catback into an Aerochamber muffler. It was a little too noisy at first, so I had a glasspack resonator installed slightly thereafter. Now, I was going to be interested to see if this mod made any improvements. I usually tried to keep it around 71, because there was a noticeable noise difference between 70-72, and 75+ was just too noisy for my taste, even with the resonator. However, many people were really hauling, so I had to get with it to keep from getting run over. I probably bounced back and forth from 72 to 75 and in a few spots hit 80. I set a new personal best time wise to the first medium small city from Knoxville, lol (about 55-60 miles away). Anyway, when I got to Nashville, I filled up, and wholla! 37.6 MPG!! That is almost 2 MPG better than I have achieved east to west in TN. So, I am quite pleased.
In normal daily driving, it is mixed highway and in town about 50 / 50. Depending on if I am working or not, I average 29 on my off week (more in town), and about 32 on my work week (split about 50/50 in town and highway).
I have an 03' GLS 5-speed, modified stock intake w/ K&N panel filter, bosch platinum +4 plugs (which supposably hurt mileage slightly), NGK wires, custom hyper ground wires, and the catback described above. In the next few weeks, I will probably pull the plugs and check them. If they don't look so good, I'll be trying out the IX Iridium NGK plugs, and see if I pick up an additional MPG.
