Have you guys seen these Clamp on oil coolers? They come in a few makes and models, i.e.

The idea seems legit to me. Increase the surface area of the oil filter with a heat conducting collar.

They use that for some older video cards....it's a heat sink basically.

video cards?

He's talking about the video card on your computer. As long as there's air flowing over the cooler it should work and would probably work quite well.

i can see people now... polishing the paint off the outside of their oil filters.... using arctic silver....

I don't really think it would actually cool the oil all that much....

You can buy a performance oil pan that looks like a heat sink. Ideally, you want the oil to be hot on our cars. Not too hot of course. If your oil gets too hot, then there is a problem somewhere else.

I love it!! I don't over-clock anymore, but man, I use to have that stuff everywhere! :abovelol:

crawl under your car and look at your oil pan
looks pretty much like a heatsink to me

Yeah, I was thinking about that. I'm sure that the oil pan is designed to be a heat sink. I'm just thinking for people that make more power might want some easy cooling. I'd venture to say that with an oversized filter and the heat sink, you probably increase your cooling surface area by 10-15%. That's not bad.

I'd buy it. It makes sense, although I doubt there would be a substantial amount of cooling taking place. Not as much as a true Oil Cooler would. I think I'll get one of these when I get some money.

Don't forget to add the 92mm Panaflo's blowing over the heatsink :)

I knew that, but i see now... (peeking at the video card right now)

Considering there's probably not much air flow around the oil filter (it's tucked above a shroud), it's probably a waste of money. I'm not sure that our cars need an oil cooler, anyway. It's one thing if you've got a turbocharged car that tends to heat the oil more or you're racing your car, but I doubt it will gain anything on a stock Elantra driven on the street. Also, you need to remember to remove it in the winter, as it will be counterproductive.

Air flow does not make the oil cooler, the heat sink effect does, it dissipates heat, I think it would work

Good Find

well, air flowing OVER the heat sink makes it cooler, so in effect you need both air and the "cooler"

No you dont Sed those fins dissipate the heat so it will still work, if you want air flow in there just add some type of hose comming in towards the filter and your golden.

Somebody quick- dyno your car before, get this thing, clamp it to your CAI or SRI, dyno after! :D

I think we need to get some oil temps before we start trying to cool the oil. It could be very damaging to have it run too cool and a waste of money for only a couple of degrees which is all I think that thing could possible do with the velosity and volume of the oik flowing through the filter.

The more airflow you have across a heat sink, the greater the cooling effect. Low air flow means little cooling. If it didn't matter, radiators wouldn't be mounted vertically in the front of cars with open grills in front of them, would they?

Isn't the whole engine a heat sink? What will that little thing do?

To some degree, yes.

What will that little thing do?
Good point.
