Hello, im new to this forum and car tuning in general. I apologize if this thread is too long.. I read the thread on accord CAIs that fit the XD's and proceeded to buy one on ebay. Of course like a tard I didnt see that I should get one for the 4cyl accords only and got the V6 kind. Well after some fanagling I WAS able to get this intake installed. The pipe was too big to fit next to the battery so its installed going down (very close to the tranny) and to the right, into the wheel well. It does not interfere with the "shift linkage" (if thats the correct term). I reset the ecu and it works nicely and the added power is apparent. The growl is also very cool!
On to the problem... the intake is making some kind of middle range pitch harmonic tone (lol) that is annoying and is very audible outside the car. The only way I can describe it is that it is similar to the sound an empty bottle makes when you blow across it, except slightly higher in pitch. Its coming from the intake itself. I believe it is from vibrations from the engine but I cant be sure. It even makes this sound for 2 seconds after the car has been turned off. Any suggestions? Should I just bite the bullet and get the correct intake? Or can I de-tard my mistake? Thanks for assisting the greatest of noobs.
I can post pictures of the intake and possibly a recording if it will help.

the sound you get from the intake when you turn off the car is normal.
don't worry about that.

Thanks for the reply. I understand the nice lil rumble it makes is normal. I had a SRI installed before and it made the same noise when I turned it off. The harmonic tone continues a second or two even after the CAI rumble is gone.

i would inspect the intake closely.
make sure that the intake is not rubbing on ANYTHING and that its mounting bracket is properly secured.
with the car running, open the hood and look / listen closely directly at the intake, have a friend turn the car off.
try to see if the intake is rubbing no anything or has any parts that could be rattling on it ... etc...
good luck !

That's not the giant sucking sound Perot was referring to is it?
I think you bite the bullet and get the right one.

Yeah, I was worried about the sound it makes when I turned off the car too....it's just the amount of air being sucked everywhere...enjoy it :) it means it's working!

My EvoFusion intake made specifically for Elantras sounds like a vacuum. It has a loud hum to it, just idling warming up in the driveway for 30 seconds wakes up the other people in my house when I leave for work in the morning.
Just doublecheck all your connections like everyone else said.

Thanks for all the advice. I will try to isolate it from contact with anything, hopefully I can get the hum to go away. If not, I will just get the correct one and pay more attention to the details. Thanks! :)

let's see how you have it setup...

The biggest rubbing/contact concern would be the master cylinder and any brakelines. So pay close attention to these areas. Check them every few thousand miles...like at oil changes.
As far as the noise issue, I have the 4-cyl Accord Intake and it makes that humming noise you described, but only when the engine is at idle. Also, when I turn the car off, the intake makes an awesome sucking noise...caused by the intake valves opening on the last crank rotation. Sometimes it's a quick gulp, as if my car is about to dive into a pool. Other times it's a slow "inhale"...and sometimes it makes no noise(like when it's the exhaust valves opening instead of the intake valves).
Enjoy the new intake. Unless you have issues with rubbing/contact, I wouldn't worry about buying another intake.

is it like a whistle almost?
could just be the air going across the breather tube

Hello again. I have checked everything and the only thing the pipe is close to is the engine mount thinger, but I dont think it will be a problem. So far everything is good. I am slowly becoming accustomed to the vibrating tone it makes, I guess its not that bad after a while. Its not really a whistle, as the sound a thin metal pipe makes when you hit it and listen to the reverb, except continuous. The noise it makes while driving around and when you shut it off is a deep growl, very nice. Im going to go ahead and leave it as is. Thanks.
If anyone still wants to see how its setup, I can get pictures.
