Here's the deal.
I have been sicker than a dog for the past week. Finally get into the doctor and they come up with severe chronic asthma. We're talking just going to the mail box at work and I'm winded. Hell I tried to do the nasty with wify and had a attack. Now I have 2 inhalers and god knows what else is in-store.
Anybody out there that can tell me what I am in-store for? Kinda sucks will have to change my whole life now. 34 yrs old and this comes out of nowhere.
The man upstairs works in strange ways.

ive got asthma...the 2 inhalers you got were probably green and red and short right? their just steroids to open up your air passage. mine only hits me when its going from warm to cold or cold to warm when the weather is changing. last couple years it hasnt really bothered me. i just started jogging and at first couldnt go more than 1/4 mile without hittin the inhaler, but im up to 1 mile without it. youll probably grow out of it with time.

also, gonna be out @ the lake tomorrow before 3 sometime. hit me up so i can check out the XD and the truck

I've had asthma since pretty much forever. Work with your doctor to find a program that works for you and you should be able to get things under control. I'm on Advair twice a day, Allegra in the morning, and Albuterol as needed. If I remember and take the Advair religiously I'm usually pretty good. Season changes can be bad times for me. Certain foods can trigger an attack, too. My doctor would love for me to get rid of my cats, but that is NOT an option.

There are two components of Asthma - airway inflammation and bronchoconstriction. The steroids (the fluticasone in Advair and many others) takes care of the inflammation, and the beta 2 agonists, (bronchodilators) - (albuterol - short acting / i.e. "rescue") and long acting - salmeterol the other component of Advair helps to open the airway. Heh heh, I said beta 2 :D . If the asthma is severe enough, the corticosteroid is by far the most important if not getting it in a combo product. It may not give the rapid relief of the albuterol, but with faithful everyday use may help cut down on the need to use your rescue inhaler. For you that exercise regulary, and still have problems, a leukotriene receptor antagonist (Singulair or Accolate) may give additional benefit.

For the ones that use Advair, has your physician or pharmacist ever mentioned exhaling through the nose after use? Some residual fluticasone (the corticosteroid) may enter the sinuses and give some minor benefit to those who suffer allergies as well. I use fluticasone intranasal (Flonase) and have not had a sinus infection in 5+ years. Once I got my allergies under control, what they thought was exercise induced asthma for me went away. If you have out of control sinus allergies, they will only aggrevate your asthma. Talk to someone about a maintainance antihistamine and possible nasal corticosteroid.

Sorry all, but I just had to hop in on this one, its my real job ;)

Did they try/test you with a round of oral corticosteroids (prednisone, methylprednisolone, dexamethasone, etc) to see if things improved? For severe asthmatics that are on everything (inhaled corticosteroid, long acting beta2 agonist, rescue short acting beta2 agonist, leukotriene receptor antagonist, and God forbid, theophylline too) its good for them to have some onhand oral corticosteroids in case of a flare-up, usually just 5 days worth will normally do the trick.

You said you didn't smoke (that great), but do you also have underlying allergies, seasonal or otherwise? Any family history of obstructive lung diseases? Are you around people that smoke (in the home), have animals in the bedroom where you sleep? Do you work in or around a lot of dust / dirt or in any polluted area air quality wise? Are you overweight, have blood pressure problems, or in general good health? Sorry, I am sure you've been grilled with these questions already....

With this new problem, you might also have been unlucky enough to have an upper respiratory infection to further complicate things. Regardless, I would stay away from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs - ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen sodium (Aleve, Anaprox), many Rx ones (Celebrex, Relafen, Mobic, etc, etc) and technically aspirin as well. They could really make things bad on you if what you in fact have now is asthma.

Air quality is really bad here where I live in East TN - lots of pollen, and just bad air quality in general. Plus, people just are not health conscience here - they smoke on top of our already poor conditions. The president was even supposed to be in Cades Cove - about 40 minutes from me (a historical Appalachian area where people farmed and "lived off the land" at the turn of the last century adjacent to the Smoky Mtns) last week to discuss cleaner air and the preservation of the area. However, some bad storms came in, and his stay was short lived.

I'm sure if Oregun catches this post he'll jump in as well. You can always PM me if you want to discuss something in private, meds or otherwise.

Well, I gotta get some shut eye. (off topic) The wife and I are going to our first birthing class in the morning.

I've had asthma since I'm born.... Mine really sucks though, I used to have a crazy huge machine inhaler back in the days with Ventolin and such...

But I've been doing a lot of cardio training for the past years and I can run 20 minutes on the tredmill at 6 mph now!

I had asthma since I was a kid and have had to take adrenalin shots to keep it in check. Albuterol (either in a nebulizer or inhaler) does work, temporarily, but Advair will work for me. With taking Advair, I rarely use Abuterol.

It depends on the person. Advair does not work for everyone. With it, I do watch what I do anmd avoid the triggers as well.
