Unfortunately I got an Auto. I would've really loved a stick, but when buying used, you can only be so picky.

my very first stickshift... driving home from the dealer was awesome during a Friday rush hour on 270 & the Beltway near DC. My stickshift-driving friend in the passenger seat was kept highly entertained; she spent most of the trip either laughing her head off or screaming "CLUTCH!!" at me. Musta stalled half a dozen times.
and due to 1-2 grinding 'cuz of screwed-up synchros, they replaced the entire transmission last October at 10k, so I got a brand new clutch in place of the one I learned to drive on. woo hoo!

This isn't a repost.
The question has been asked before, but not officially. Plus, it was a member request.
and I'm sure the question "Automatic OF manual" hasn't been asked before.

Manual, bcoz I prefer to drive manuals. I have never driven an auto XD, so I'm a little biased towards the manual. Hyundai Australia's latest promotion is selling Elantra's with free auto's. But everytime I get my XD serviced at the local dealership, they always give me a manual loaner. I was offered an auto loaner once, and I said 'Now P is for park, R is for reverse, is D for DAMN FAST?' The salesman looked at me, and said 'Maybe you'd be better off with the workshop ute instead.'

04 GT 5 Speed Sedan. I told my local dealer what package, tranny, and color I wanted and sure enough they got it for me. I stopped by on a Friday and talked to them. Gave them a deposit over the phone on Saturday and picked up the exact car I wanted on Tuesday. :D

03 GLS Auto
Acceleration on the Manual is so much better (gear ratios).
Gas mileage at 85 mph on the auto is much better (gear ratio).

Manual. I wouldnt even look at an automatic when I went looking for a car. I had a 4 cylinder automatic car once and said never again.

I prefer MT, but my wife strongly requested this car be an AT. My last car was MT and on those few occasions when her car was not available, she could not drive mine. She doesn't drive a stick, has bad knees, and absolutely no desire to learn. And since she rarely drives my car anyway, she would forget how to drive a stick even if I taught her.
robs02elantra
11-16-2005, 06:38 PM
My wife didn't want to learn, but it was because her dad insisted that all his daughters learn on his wrx, which wasn't the easiest stick to drive. It was his baby, and he let it get too personal when they would stall and what not. Anyway, I taught her and she is doing just fine now.
I think that my previous statement of outlawing automatics was a little strong, but I just think that with something as potentially dangerous as driving (or as my dad calls it, piloting a 2 tonne bomb) I don't think it is wise to make it so people have less to do. Also, with a standard, if you can learn how to drive it properly, there are more things that you can utilise in emergency situations, like the clutch to slow you down for example. I just think that if people were educated correctly on how to drive standard, driving might just be a little safer overall.
I do know that there are people who just can't drive standard, and I don't blame them for that or even think that they should not be allowed to drive, I just think that more people should be given the training, and that it should be more encouraged to drive a stick.
I gotta have a m/t,driving just isn't the same without them.

You may not think it's wise, but unless you can show some evidence that indicates manual transmission cars are safer than autos, you're just so much hot air.

Well, I am sorry that I did not present my case well enough. I just think that if we could get some people who think they can drive, and talk on phones at the same time, or other things like that in an automatic, to then go and do something else with the other hand and leg...we might have more people concentrating on the task at hand.
Anyway, like I said, sorry for not giving my opinion in a better way. Here's hoping that I don't fail my words again in the future.
(no sarcasm at all, honest!)

The real problem, then, is that you don't like it when people think they can do non-driving related activities when behind the wheel. With that, I can heartily agree!

Cool, sorry again for not making it clearer.

11-16-2005, 10:38 PM
LOL I talk on the phone sometimes while i shift gears :)
Anyways... Here's what I think: driving is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. You have to earn it. Some people like (don't get me wrong here) handicaps, or normal people just drive like idiots, or 89 year olds that parasite our streets with their bad vision and 15 kph driving speeds, well, they should be using common transportation.
A car is no joke. You are driving a man killing weapon. If you aren't able to drive stick, your reflexes aren't good enough. You don't have good eye/hand coordination. You shouldn't drive at all.
End of rant :D

is there any difference between an 01-03 manual and a 04-06 manual?
I thought only the auto trannys got changed from a mitsu in the earlier Elantra's to a Hyundai tranny

and i cant drive an atomactic when ever i try i always tend to slam on the brake cause i want to push in the non existant clutch.Buy a car with an AT and you'll cure yourself of that pretty quickly. When I was driving a 5-spd Ford Aspire and my wife and an AT Escort, I did the clutch-foot-on-the-brake panic stop several times!

My wife insisted that I get an auto so she can talk on the phone and drive in traffic at the same time. I love my car but hate the auto! I've been trying to find a way to reprogram the TCM (I auto-x my car) to get some more control... I guess I'll end up trading to get my trans :( She never even drives it now!

i did the clutch foot on brake pedal as doohickie calls it once and my brother hit the dashboard lol it was great i couldnt' stop laughing... even before i had my car i would get into my mom's crappy ford contour and try to hit the clutch to start it... it was weird especially since i had only driven a stick a couple times

Craputomatic.....I wish I would have got the carbon blue one on the lot it had a manual. I will never own another automatic period. Unless I have a wooden left leg. Then again I could always fab my clutch pedal to be bigger so I can drive with my wooden leg.
