Not bad. At first glance the XBox 360 still appears to have the edge on performance. And it shows in the screenshots of the games being developed.

The Xbox 360 has a 3-core 3.2 GHz PowerPC processor, which is basically the same thing as having 3 independent processors each running at 3.2 GHz. That's the kind of technology you'd see on an enterprise-level server, lol.

Here are the specs that are known so far for the Xbox 360:

3.2 GHz PowerPC processor with 3 cores
ATI custom graphics chip
512MB GDDR3 Unified System Memory
10MB embedded DRAM
12X DVD drive
20GB HDD

The fact that XB360 will not support Blu-Ray or HD-DVD will hurt it, in my book. These 'systems' are moving away from just being video game players. If I were to buy one, PS3 would have a leading edge just for the fact that I then would not have to buy a DVD player with digital 1080i output, or a Blu-Ray player (when they become more prevelant).

The memory architectures are also different. Whereas XB360 uses 512MB of shared memory (split between system and video) and does not have a stand-alone graphics processor. PS3 has 256 for system, and 256 for video memory, with a 550MHz GPU.

Although it doesn't matter much, it also sucks that XB360 will not be able to play Xbox games, while PS3 will be able to play PS2 and PS1 games.

That's true... that's one advantage the PS3 is going to have. But whether or not that becomes a selling point is going to depend on how well it's movie playing functionality is implemented. Some people may be happier with buying their own independent HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player down the road than using their video game system to watch movies.

They're both going to be excellent systems though, and the simple fact that HDTV is being fully adopted is a big step up. That's always been one of the biggest problems with video game consoles since the resolution was so poor in comparison to what a PC can do. Now with HDTV the resolutions used in the games will be as good or better than a top of the line gaming PC will do today.

I thing the blu-ray capability is a moot point, unless the 2 standards merge. If they don't (and that is a real possibility), then you'll only be able to play blu-ray movies in it..... you'll still have to buy a player that will play HD-DVD.....

Link works ok for me. I'll probably be going with the Xbox 360 when the time comes. Been really happy with my X-box so far. I doubt I will play the old games much but if I do I will just use it. Perhaps when I have the new system it'll be time to mod it into a Linux PC. :D

Well, graphics are graphics to me, so as long as the games aren't poorly done, then I'm not really worried. I'm more into the software than the hardware. And if you aren't aware, the talented developers can do some amazing things with easier-to-use, more simple hardware. Has everyone seen RE4 in action on GC?

And, a couple weeks back IGN had an article about how Sony and (insert name here, I can't remember) have decided to use the Blu-Ray software with the HD-DVD hardware (or was it vice versa?). So, the disc medium shouldn't be any problem, no worries of a VHS vs Beta war this time around (which is good for the consumers).

Like I said in the other thread, I'll support the system with the best (which to me is most fun) games and the best (not least expensive) price.

PS. Has anyone noticed I love to use parentheses?

For the XBox 360...

Project Gotham Racing 3 looks pretty sweet
http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/741/741362/vids_1.html

And so does Ghost Recon 3
http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/736/736206/imgs_1.html

For the PS3...

I must admit this game MotorStorm looks incredible

... pretty insane damage modeling.

last I heard, it fell through......

probably what will happen is that manufacturers will build players that can play both formats.... this way they don't have to worry about supporting the loser and losing money.

I just was reading about the Nintendo Revolution, it's supposed to be backwards compatible all the way to NES. I gotta say that sounds pretty cool. I think I might have to buy all 3 systems again.

From what I have been reading, the PS3 id backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 while the XBox360 will only be backward compatible with select games.

I don't know. Right now it's simple. Xbox kicks everything else's ***, except high end computers of course, but I'm not rich enough to keep up on the computer front. If the next gen machines are more or less equal, then I guess the games will have to decide it for me.

how much HP does that translate into for each system? Ford needs to dyno them asap.

I wouldn't say that, it really depends on what games you like right now as well. I think they GC is my favorite system. There is a higher percent of quality games on GC I think.

Don't get me wrong, that damn xbox with Live is addicting as hell. But I have less than 5 games and I'm happy with it.

High res pics of the new Nintendo Revolution:

I'm sure E3 is going to reveal lots and lots more.

Oh, one more thing, since xBox 360 is coming out this holiday season it's going to have a big jump on PS3 and Revolution, I hope Sony and Nintendo know what they are doing. Also, Halo 3 is scheduled to come out the same day as Sony releases PS3... ouch.

What I heard was that you would be able to download the older games to run on the system.... basically the system will have emulators for the old systems built in... This way it will work more reliably than hacking your xbox and putting emulators on it... and it would even be legal! It's a VERY good idea as long as the games are reasonably priced...

if it ends up being a slot-load like in the picture, it may not play GC games... which would be a terribly ironic considering it will play NES games....LOL

Just posted on ign, the PS3 will cost about 50,000yen.
Or $429

SuperGLS

That's in Japan though. I'd guess Sony would go with a $399 price here. Expect Xbox 360 to be the same, although I still think Revolution would be cheaper. Maybe $349.

We'll see... I bet retailers will tell people they can only buy them with a game bundled or something stupid. Stupid retailers.

like you'd buy a console without a game???

but I know what you mean.... I worked at CC when the xbox came out.... and I think to get one on the first day you had to buy a bundle that included a game and a couple other things... stupid idea I think....

Microsoft is still losing money on every Xbox they sell right now. I don't imagine Mr. Gates wants to keep losing money... hmm.

There is a good article in Time magazine right now about Microsoft, Gates, and the Xbox 360. Check it out.

Oh, when I said Xbox kicks everything else's ***, I meant graphics and processing wise. I'm a graphics whore. It's got to look good or else. I played some GT4 and I was disappointed with the graphics and the lack of damage and the lack of speed sensation. But I love the games too for Xbox, namely Forza, Halo2, Burnout3 (best soundtrack on any game ever), and Colin Mcrae 2005.

We'll have to wait and see but here's where the speculation comes from...

How much will Xbox 360 cost?
The sweet spot for the cost of a new console at launch is $299. This is a good estimate of what a core package will cost for Xbox 360. Right now we know that every system comes with a twenty gigabyte hard drive. The system is DVD ready out of the box and we have seen the remote, but there is no word on whether that will come packaged with the console. The bundle has become an incredibly popular sales technique, so don't be surprised to see more comprehensive bundles that include controllers and peripherals for around $500.

I see. That sounds like there isn't even a controller included...strange. They are using wireless controllers from what I've read, so I think they'll need to be included (people won't be able to use the current controllers, that's for sure).

All this video game news makes me excited.

The motorstorm graphics kick a$$!
Me & hubby have been watching g4tv all week. They showed a lot of the clips for both games and IMO I think ps3 has the best graphics.

Every console maker loses money on them. It is the licensing they do which makes them the money. I think the PS2 is just now starting to make Sony a little money on the hardware.

I would personally buy the PS3. I'm a racing game freak, and I don't like the way the current X-Box controllers feel while racing(namely using the triggers for gas and brake), as well as the fact that they are bulky. I haven't seen the new controllers for the X-Box yet, but I have seen what the new PS3's controllers look like, and they look so much better feeling than what I picture Microsoft coming out with for the X-Box. As far as graphics, the more realistic the better, as long as I can enjoy playing the game with the controller layout. Otherwise, I'm happy with my PS2 graphics. Sony is also on the cutting edge with processor technology that's not even out in a commercially available PC, Microsoft tends to go with PC industry standard pieces since their bread and butter is the PC/IT industry, not that that's a bad thing, though. Just my $.02.
