View Full Version : SRI placement

After installing an SRI, is there an ideal location for the positioning of the filter? I installed a '97 Accord short ram, and I currently have the filter between the engine and the battery right behind the radiator fan. I thought this might be good for airflow, but I also realize that this is bad for air temp since it is basically right up against the engine. Would I be better off shortening the pipe and shifting it to the right so that it rests behind the battery and above where the stock box used to be? My description and question would probably be easier to understand with a picture, which I will try to post later. I've searched the forums, but I haven't found anything that specifically addresses this. Comments, criticisms, and random $0.02 are greatly appreciated.

well, really it doesn't make THAT much of a difference. Its really hot under there at all operating times, so placement is pretty much rearranging deck chairs on the titantic, but i would suggest using the stock air shield that attaches above the driver side light to deflect some of the really hot air being blown around by fans, and angling the filter towards the stock resinator (or where the resinator used to be)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll make the necessary changes tonight, and hopefully that will improve performance. However, one problem I have is that the stock air shield was removed sometime ago. I don't know why, when, or who, but I just noticed one day when jump strarting my car that it was gone. I haven't been able to find a replacement part. Is there a way to make one?

it is quite easy to make one out of thin sheet metal.

:)

Then you drill it out to match the holes on the radiator support in the same spot as the stock shield went... the use some nuts and bolts to hold it in place...

use some metal shears like these to cut the sheet metal..

easy job..

but metal would hold the heat longer and wouldn't keep the "filter side" of the engine bay as cool as a plastic one.

if you install it in the same location as the stock heat shield, it should not be anywhere near the air filter itself.

also, the shield will diffuse most of the airflow that would have came from the radiator so the filter should be a few degrees cooler even if the shield is made of metal.

also, you can spray the sheet metal with some paint or something to help reduce the " radiant " heat that it could possibly emit once it is at maximum temperature..

Ford,

While, as usual, you do a bang up job writing up a FordFasterr Special, you must specify there that you can't use that setup on a 04-05 Elantra without cutting and getting reducing couplers...

with an 04 maf setup, i think you can still get away without reducers... just 2 straight up 3 inch ID couplers + 4 extra clamps will work fine.

sed, I have one more SRI here that we can install in your car anytime you want then we can do a write-up on EXD for it. :)

yeah thats a good idea, just don't charge me 50 bucks this time!

anyway, the OD of the MAF is 2.75" the ID of the SRI is 3", even with couplers that isn't going to be enough i think. I really think you would need a 3 - 2.75 reducer coupler

I got an OEM heat shield from the dealer, and I also put one around the filter.

Yeah, I could do something like that, but at the moment I don't have any more pipe. I'll probably just wait a while and eventually upgrade to a full CAI with AEM valve.

This heat shield around the filter is what we were disucssing above, it does not make sense to place a metal plate directly over the filter element, the heat it will produce will neutralize some of the gains you get from the cone filter because once the plate gets hot, the radiant heat will go directly into the engine..

the stock heat shield is good enough to reduce the heat that is directed toward the filter in most situations..

also, having a shield SO CLOSE to the filter will reduce the air-flow that the filter can absorb because it diffuses air-flow on the sides that it covers...

lol

Ok. Thanks for the tip. I'll remove the filter shield tonight. I guess that was $15 that could have been better spent. Anyone want to buy a slightly used shield? ;)
