i believe it has something to do with wheel width as well. here's what i know:
stock steelies 5.5" offset 40
stock gt 6" offset 42
gls allow 6.5" offset 45

yeah... it kinda does.... the wider the wheel, the more offset you need to keep it from rubbing on the inside....

If you have coilovers you have to worry less about rubbing on the strut.

i dont think offset's and width have anything in common. they are 2 different things when pertaining to rims. you can get a variety of different offsets with different widths. i have coilovers and no rub...except the inside wheel well liner. it rubs when i turn the wheen 90% or more in either direction. i will verify this when i do my rotation before i store it for the winter.

i have a 18"x7" w/45mm offset. no rubbing with the stock suspension(used to have), no rubbing with tib ultrasports w/tein springs(used to have), and no rubbing with the B&G coilovers i now have(except as mentioned above...the liner, no big deal tho), and i have it about as low as you can possibly go. ill put a pop can under the rocker panels to show you how low i have it set at. and the fronts and rears are about dead on as far as lowering. usually the rear sits lower than the front, not a problem with coilovers. :D

Yeah but what i said was meant for the elantra. OE offset seems to be 40 for 5.5" wide wheels, 42~43 for 6" wide wheels and 45 for 6.5" wide wheels.

This is just a guess but i would think that 7" would be best fitted with 48 offset, which does not mean that 38 would'nt rub.
