View Full Version : New Wheel Vibrations

Last night I removed the stock wheels and put on some 17" rims with 215-45/17. Now when I drive at speeds over 50 mph the steering wheel shakes. Would this be an issue with balancing the tires? Could this be caused by not having the right amount of torque on the lugs? Any thoughts?

Check to see if the lugs are tight, then go get the wheels balanced.
you need hubcentric rings son! take the pressure off the lugs and put it in the center! - SW has taught me well

Thanks for all the info. I couldn't find a tire store in town with hubcentric rings in stock, but one place said they would have them for me tomorrow. Hopefully, by tomorrow evening I'll have my problem solved.

A local tire center ordered the rings for me for $10 and then installed them for free. The car drives better now, but there is still the vibrations except that now it doesn't start until about 60 mph instead of 40-50. Do the tires need balancing?

take the screws out of the rotors if that hasnt been done, if it still persists then i would say get em balanced.
it sucks but i think most people here said that after they got their wheel/tires from a cheaper source offering free mounting and balancing they had to get them RE-balanced...

Have them Balancedd, it took the dealer for me , two times( aftermarkrt wheels and tires) but they got it right.

Also, some people have never gotten rid of a minor shimmy too... I had a medium shimmy and rotated my tires... it got worse... then put on new wheels and tires, had them balanced, it got a little better... then got hub rings... a little better... then did my tibby ultrasports and Eibachs, got a lot better... it's still not perfect but it's a whole lot better. There are some really long threads around here about our shimmy problem...

My car did the same thing, I had them RoadForced balanced and all is fine now.

What is RoadForced balanced?

It looks like a regular balancer but it has a wheel that rolls on the tire when balancing. It shows the heavy spot of the rim, and shows the heavy spot of the tire. They brake the tire down and line the tire to the rim.
I had mine done at Discount Tire.
By the way I use to live in Augusta. I worked at Honda of Augusta.

I went to three places in town, but none of them offered roadforce balancing so I just got them regular balanced. This helped. There is still a slight tremor through the steering wheel at high speeds, but I can live with that for now. Next time I'm due for a rotation I'll be sure to find a place with the roadforce.

I've always had some kind of shimmy in the wheel. with the stock and my new aftermarket wheels and tires. Some days it seems worse. but also with the 40r tires, you do feel more of the road. it sucks. Now, what is this about hub rings things? I got mine at discount tire, think they just put them on?

Check if you removed the assembly screws
What are these assembly screws you talking about and what's their purpose?

There are two screws that keep stuff in place during manufacturing. If you take off your wheel you should see them, or two holes from which they were removed.

I think I'm looking for a better definition that it holds things in place such as what things in place and what things will be out of place when they are removed and what effect does removing the screws have on the balance of the wheels.

The screws are from the assembly process in the plant, their only purpose was to hold the brake assembly together as the car was on the assembly line. They serve no other purpose and can be removed without any negative effect. The stock wheels don't come into contact with these assembly screws, but almost all aftermarket wheels do and that keeps the wheel from sitting flush against the rotor hat and so it will vibrate.

I will remove those screws and see what happens but if I recall when I had the wheels off those screws were flush on the hub anyway.
