Picked up a set of wheels, nothing fancy, but everytime I back up, I hear a rubbing sound, like metal against metal can't figure it out. Sound comes from front of car. Took off wheels can't find any marks on the rims puzzled.
Thanks Emerson

Are you using hubcentric rings on your aftermarket rims? If so, put some anti-sieze grease on them. It's just possible that they may be loose enough that they're sliding around and making that sound -- the grease will keep them stuck to the hub or wheel enough to keep them from moving easily.
If you don't have hubcentric rings, get them! That's not a likely cause of the noise, but it will keep your wheels on if you hit a major pothole.

I had the exact problem but mine was forward, reverse, and sideways! LOL I eventuallly took my hub rings off the front and the problem went away. I had some shake in my steering wheel at speeds of 50mph-65mph when I had my rings on and the problem didn't get any worse with them off. I never had my car aligned after I put my wheels on. Could this be the problem? Or could it be my rims need rebalancing?

Emerson,
I definately agree with Sed on this one.
You'd better take out those screws ASAP.

Should this be done with stock rims (steelies) also?

it's only necessary to remove the screws if you have aftermarket wheels that will not fit properly with the screws in place.....
