Quite an engine to be putting in such a plain-looking truck. That'll be quite the sleeper until you get the tires and paint job. :D Gotta love american muscle. That thing's gonna suck the gas, though. I wouldn't want one with gas prices like they are now. Oh well.

Put it in the elantra...

i will paint it something that screams "OH YEAH BABY" nothing wild like hot pink but like, a burnt cherry or dark midnight blue or something like that with some sort of striping decal like the joe gibbs silverado type of deal. something mean but subtle

i will also replace all the chrome trim that the xlt's came with and all the chrome light bezels and the like to brand new as opposed to used but in good condition.

i want to make this truck look sharp when you see it not just clean you know? and under the hood, i will accesories with chrome pumps and pulleys with a painted engine bay and glass filter cases etc etc

the interior will take the longest probably as i will completely redo it. it will be covered in black pleather or vynil(sp?) chrome and "brushed silver" from top to bottom(appropriately of course) and new carpetting from front to back and a new custom headliner with the inlaid flames or some sort of design(real easy to do)

its gonna be pretty sweet

oh yeah, i will get a truck avenger series carb and dual plenum intake for maximum fuel efficency which should lead to about 20-25 miles to the gallon . . . plus for the most part(80% of the time) it will be a secondary or "fun time" driver to the elantra.

you know what, i SWEAR i have always thought of that. if it werent for the fact that the frame would probably have to be widened(no thanks, waaaaaay too much hassle) i would have some day done it. lol it CAN be done, you should need to remove any brackets for the motor mounts and mount new ones. but the widening and the "top heaviness" would probably also kill that project dead in its tracks lol

That will be a cool truck, and ever since I helped a buddy of mine put a suped-up 351 Windsor in his 82 Mustang, I've liked that engine. There's a fair amount of "meat" on the 351 Windsor between cylinders, unlike the 350 chevy. I've heard from my Ford buddy that the 351 cleveland is better (4-bolt mains and such, heavier duty), but they're more expensive to mod and more rare.

However, I'm waiting to hear if you reach anything near 20mpg with a 351 Windsor 5.8L V8, regardless of the manifold and carb. You're going to be hauling around so much weight in frame, body and engine, plus the wind resistance. Personally, I seriously doubt that you'll see anything better than (maybe) 18 mpg highway and closer to 14-16 city mpg.

Seriously, though, let me know how it goes, and what your fuel economy turns out to be for real.

3/4 ton + 351 = 18mpg if your lucky

I get 20mpg in my 03 GMC 4X4 3/4ton crew cab w/ duramax (which has been dyno'd at 525whp/1025Tq ) ... but not if Im pulling the trailer...

Of all my friends with fords ( I've tried to convert them) I can't remember a single 351 getting better than 17mpg. I'm not saying it can't be done, just highly unlikey. One of these was in a mustang, 3000lb car with overdrive trans and he could brely get 18. Fords were never known for their gas mileage.

Shoulda dropped in a Powerstroke. That woulda been a killer machine!

Otherwise it should sound great. It already looks good.

ok so things have changed i think. my wife has been desperately trying to get me to change my mind about the 80-86 F series and i think she is succeeding.

i am now really really really loving the 97-01 and the 92-96 fseries(in order of liking the most) and thinking of getting one of those instead. it would be:
newer, more reliable(? lol) nicer looking, easier to get parts and accesories for etc

i really like the 97-01 crewcab 4x4's . . . reeeeeeeeally nice lookin!
if i were to go on the cheapside and still try to keep a bit of the older look, i would have to go with the 92-96(probably a 94) 4x4 supercab and still do the tires and suspension and all that.

i will then leave this engine project for another time down the road. i have been thinking(and i will do this for sure if i get a newer truck) to just drop something like this (the engine above) into a 60's stang or other ford hot rod.

the 80-86 is a nice series, very "rustic feeling" and all that (lol) but the newer trucks are well, just that, newer and cleaner and nicer and a hell of a whole lot less work thats for sure(restoration/customization wise). who knows, maybe i will get one later on just for the hell of it/to urk my wife lol

Good call on looking newer. You'll be avoiding the 'comforts' of a 20+ year old truck.

lol. yeah, i decided its not the right time for my hobby truck. the family needs of comfort, reliability in case the hyundai breaks down, and them not being ashamed to be seen in my "in progress" hobby truck outweighed the desire to have a beater lol
