Well, I'm finally getting started on the interior painting. Parts will be in this week and next. (I don't like painting the originals, so I got extras). The colors I plan on using are the silver of the body, and dark grey metal flake (just like the outside of my car, silver, and the lip is dark gray).

My original thought is to paint the fascia and upper door panels silver, and leave the vents and window-switch-panels alone. Then I saw sed's interior picture, where he just painted the vents silver and left the fascia gray. I thought that looked good too. Help me out. Please post some pictures of your painted interiors so I can get a feel of what scheme I'm going to go with. Thanks.

Here ya go, I like this option best. Any way you do it, please make sure there is something to offset the paint. I have seen red on red and also the silver on chrome, both not appealing IMO....

edit: Damn it !!! now I need to learn how to post pics AGAIN!!! so here:

TNT, that's what I had in mind in the beginning:

But after seing Seds, I'm not sure which I'll do.

Regardless, they're the same color scheme, just reversed... opinions?

Yea, I've seen yours. The red turned out well, it's just too much color for me. doens't blend well with my neutrals and half-tones.

My fascia is silver, the vents, switches, and cig tray are all black. I can take pictures if you want, just so you know what to expect if you go my way :D

I wish you could all see my interior in person. It just looks so classy, like everything is meant to be there. When you paint the entire dash fascia, to me its like you are trying to cover everything you can with paint. I like accents, subtle hints of color.

thats just me though

Since I no longer have the car, feel free to copy the colors. ;) Krylon Fusion "Red Pepper"...same stuff RabidDogBoy used on his interior. Holds up extremely well.

Thanks for the pix, rix... I think I'm going to do similar to what you did, but not with red. I want to match the exterior paint as best as possible. Also, I don't think I'll do the Bezel on the gauges. Thanks for helping me visualize.

Krylon Fusion has the amazing property of after 1 week, it is guarenteed not to chip or crack. Now the only problem is, there is no Fusion Silver. So i had to use a Krylon "Original Chrome" paint to get a silver color. Then I clear-coated it, and it has this sand-papery texture if you put more than 2 coats on, and a thin, finger-nails-can-put-marks-in-it-but-it's-smooth texture if you put only 1 coat on it.
I wish there was a Fusion Silver, but...meh, whatever.
Whatever you choose, it'd be great to see the results.

bolobfly - sed had his wife paint the emblem silver with a paintbrush. She is/was a graphic artist, so has more talent than most of us.

if you cant decide, check out my paint, i just did the interior plastic pieces up front (dash, center console and passenger vent) in a chameleon that really turns heads when they see it. i also did the door panels up front. the rest will be black when i get time to do it.

The in-dash gauges are a DIN unit made for the Tiburon (aka Coupe) that a few of us have made work on the elantra. Do a search for "multigauge" to find more information on that.

Silly little question: How do you get that vent piece off (the one in the dash by the passenger door)?

Vampyrate
01-19-2006, 11:29 AM
take a flat head and pry it off... it pops off and everytime i have removed it (a dozen or so) im afraid that ive broken it because it literally pops off

hyunelan2
01-19-2006, 11:43 AM
Be carful if you're going to paint that one. Myself, and many others, have broken some of the little vent 'fins' when removing those and preping it for painting.

Vampyrate
01-19-2006, 01:29 PM
i didnt do that, i just painted it all... its on the passenger side adn just didnt care about it, i think it looks good either way, gets me to think if i should paint the other vents like it too

Vamp I advise you clear wiith at least 4 Coats then Wet Sand with 2000 Grit paper and polish the paint to a mirror shine

So what process is recommended to paint these interior pieces?

I have a can of engine paint (Aluminum, matches Pewter damn near perfectly)

Like this?
3-5 light layers of paint (10 min between each layer)
2-4 layers of clear
Wet Sand 2000 Grit

Ive painted other plastic fixtures before, and they have came out very well. (i.e. headlights, engine cover) I ssume the only extra process would be to add clear coat to ensure lastability.

hyunelan2
01-22-2006, 12:12 AM
Just be sure not to wetsand a metallic paint - it takes the luster right out of it. If you clear-coat it and wetsand the clear, that's ok, but don't attempt to wet sand the 'aluminum'

I cant decide on whether to do mine like yours, or like seds.

hyunelan2
01-22-2006, 12:29 AM
I know what you mean, I had the same problem. The way I decided was "if I'm gonna take this all apart, I might as well paint more than just accents around vents." I think in my case, I made the right decision because I'm happy with how it turned out.
