View Full Version : Would the stock exhaust cause a loud squeak if it had to be recalled?

When Ilm driving my 01 Elantra, sometimes I hear this loud squeak coming from the underside of the vehicle. I'm not hitting the brake, and the e-brake isnt on. When it happens, it usually not more than 5 seconds. I can compare the sound to the screaching noise in vehicles when the pwer steering goes out, or when you try to turn the wheel when the steering is frozen.

The frozen steering is not an issue cause its hot, but I'm fed up with this noise. The only recall I havent got done was the voluntary exhaust one. From what I've read, the exhaust may leak. Could this cause this louse sharp noise to happen?

Also, has anyone ever had a problem with a dealership saying they did the recall, but having the recall not actually being done? I asked this because my airbag light is still coming on. It used to be infrequent, but now its just constantly on.

I doubt that it could be the exhaust, but who knows. I almost wonder if one of your engine belts is going.

It wouldn't hurt to have the exhaust manifold checked out, though. If you don't do it before the Pittsburgh meet we can take a look and listen then...

That would suck if it was my belt. i would hate to drive up to Pittsburg with the threat of my belt going out.

the weird thing, is I just came back from NC today (4hr drive) and I rarely heard the noise. I stayed pretty much at a constant 70-85 mph. I seems like I only here the noise between 40-60Mph. Its really weird.

Its prolly about time to goto the dealership anyway.
1. Gotta get airbag light checked out
2. See if I need exhaust manifold redone
3. Check out this weird noise
4. Get oil change (might as well get it done while there)

I'm a try to get it done next week after the meet. lets just hope nothing drastic happens between now and than.

If you're not noticing anything else happening with the squeak (loss of power, lights dimming, etc), I doubt it's anything drastic.
