View Full Version : Scratches
Today after washing it I noticed that there are a bunch of scratches in the clearcoat on my brand new car. Im so pissed off.
I trying rubbing compound and it helped a little. I waxed it with Nanowax after using the compound and the scratches were lightened but are still there.
I can run my fingernail over them and feel them just a little bit. Theyre not really deep.
How can I get these scratches out? I really dont want to buff the hood myself.
Should I take it to a good body shop and have them sand and buff the affected area?
The scratches are also in the plastic chrome part of the grille. Is there a way to get those out at all? Theyre not as bad as the hood.
Id like to kill whoever or whatever put the scratches there. I think it might have been a cat from the parking lot at work but I dont know for sure.

I think from your description that they are too deep to be removed by yourself. I'd take it to a paint shop to see if they can be removed, which I suspect they cannot be. You might have to get it recleared.
I know how to remove them, but I won't suggest you do what I do.
What do you do to them?
Theyre not real deep and I can only see them while looking at the hood certain ways.

Don't blame kitty, I seriously doubt that the claws are harder than the clearcoat. :)
Ive seen alot of cars scratched up by cats and some had paw prints to prove it.
Lately my car has only been at home or work 95% of the time. I know for a fact theres cats around the parking lot at work.

Meguiar's Tech Wax I hear works pretty well. I have a bottle of it but have not tried it yet, it's been way too hot down here. I always suggest that people do not use that damn brush on their cars at the car wash, if you've used it that's what their from. I also saw an episode of Trucks! and he used a set of really fine wet sandpapers and wet sanded a scratched up hood. Honestl it looked good.

saw that same episode, one of my favorite series, stacey david is the bomb!
I sponge wash my car all the time at home and the only place there's scratches is on the hood. I dont want to sand the hood and screw it up on an '05.

Take it to the body shop... if you're not comfortable with buffing it yourself, I wouldn't recommend wetsanding it yourself either. They'll be your best bet. And if they screw up, they're a bodyshop, they can fix it. They'll probably start with a buffer and see how much they can smooth it out. They are pros though, when you show up for an estimate, they'll probably know immediatey, what they'll need to do to solve your problem. Good luck.

If you want to follow the cheap route you could go get yourself some clear coat touch-up. Just like the paint in a dinky bottle only its the clear in a dinky bottle. You could use an artists fine paint brush rather than the big white-out looking brush and hit the spots you have issues with.
Assuming you have a steady hand and a good eye you should be able to use a little rubbing compound and a soft cloth to take care of any uneven surfaces left in the end.
I did this on my Blazer before my Elantra and it worked out beautiful... saved a ton of $ too !

Can you buy like and circular buffer at an auto shop? I have countless dings and scratches. Could I go get some hard-core wax and just use the buffer? I don't really wax my car much and I wash it too much so I think that’s not good.
