I thought this might be an interesting topic... I'm not planning on doing this conversion, but I figured we could get an idea of what parts would be needed.
So, from what I can see, to convert the exterior of the XD hatchback to the XD2 hatchback appearance, you'd need a front bumper skin, hood, headlights, grille, fog lights, taillights and the painted-to-match rear lip spoiler. I believe the front fenders are the same... Does that sound right?
The front exterior of the XD sedan can be converted with the same front end parts, but the XD2 trunk lid and taillights won't fit, according to what others have posted.
For the interior, the GT leather seats would have to be replaced with the lighter gray leather seats, as would the door inserts. The dash fascia around the instrument cluster and the passenger side air vent would have to be swapped. I don't know if the gauge cluster can be swapped between the years.

From memory, the gauge cluster cannot simply be swapped, as the wiring harnesses are different. I don't know if the same signal wires are in the harnesses, so you would be able to splice together a working harness or not.
For exterior, you also need fenders, as the areas around the lights are different. Basically, for body parts, you need everything except the roof, doors, and windows.

I personally don't like the front of the XD2 at all. The grill just doesn't look right. The lights are ok but dunno. I do like the interior...
Hope the XD2 guys don't get mad at me....
It would just be alot of work to do unless an XD1 and XD2 did a trade for parts. But don't see that happening...

Really? Oh, my bad then. I thought the area where the headlights met the fenders was different, but I would say that Ilan is more of an expert on this one, since he's owned both cars.

I like the XD front end better than the XD2 myself, too. I just thought it might be interesting to know the different parts for reference.

Well there you go, 2 less parts that would need to be swapped....

Just the fronts? I could understand that. I believe the rears are different though? I know you can't swap XD & XD2 sedan tail lights cause the contours are different.

The fenders are the same. Ilan is right. We've gone over this before, the part numbers are the same (Kinda like the RD/RD2 Tibs).
Also, on a sedan, you'd need the XD2 rear bumper.
On the inside, you'd also need some of the HVAC piping that is behind the dash, as dash layouts are different, meaning the pipes (at least the ones adjoining the dash fascia) going to them should be different. You'd also need a different rear deck with the covered child seat holders. The center console is also different, the storage area in the front is deeper on the XD2's. On tan interior Elantras you'd also need a different dash completely, as the XD2 has a more brownish gray while the XD dash is tan. Same with the ebrake handle. Along with the dash fascia, you'd need the new ash tray and some wiring for the extra outlet next to it.
I'm sure I'll think of other things.

Keep in mind the angles on the trunk lids between 01-03 XD sedans & 04+ are different too.

i'd do a delta swap before i'd make an XD look like a XD2 (or vice versa)...

Oh yeah, I wouldn't bother dong this swap... I thought of it mainly to see if someone messed up their front end or other parts, what parts they could put on from the XD2.
What got me thinking about this is that in the early 90's the girlfriend of my best friend had a Geo Storm and she crunched the front end. She had the first generation, the later one had the partial flip up headlight covers and a slightly different bumper skin. I thought it would have been interesting if she'd had the newer front end put on the older Storm, since the parts had to be replaced anyway...
so the xd headlights plug right in on a xd2 and vice?

They wires plug in, but they will leave a gap which will need the bumpers swapped too to look right (XD1 lights to XD2). The XD2 lights to XD1 car will not fit with out the bumper cover changed also. The Bumper markers, if not the same (which I think they are), will plug in.
I have an 03 GT parts car and compared it to my 05 GLS. The radiator support needs to be checked too.
