On my 2005 GLS I have noticed that the door open/key in chime does not operate with lights inadvertenly left on with ignition OFF.
I see that only the parking lights remain on in this condition, which is good enough to save the battery for a few hours.
Is there any way to get the chime to work with ignition OFF/key in and parking lights on? I think it would make for a good DIY project.

When you turn off the car and remove the key, all the lights turn off. They will only come on if your car is in the 'off state' and you turn on the lights.

yup saved my butt a couple of times!! its a nice little thing....along with you cant lock the doors with the key in the ignition when the door is open...hence you could almost never lock your keys in the car

Turning off the car and removing the key turns off the headlights, but the parking lights only turn off when you open the door. With that in mind, if you want the lights on while your car is off, just open your door and then turn on the lights.
That's a good point though, I do miss the way one of our other cars chimed if you left the lights on. My door chime is disabled now because it bugs me, but I'd hook it up to indicate the lights if that were possible.
