Alright, so I am currently saving up my money to buy a new audio system and over the last couple weeks, I have been going around and checking out different brand systems including JL, Kicker, MTX, Rockford, etc.
I really liked how hard JL w7's hit so I thought about getting JL 1000/1 with two 10w7's but the guy at the audio shop said that I would most likely need to change my alternator (which he said would be around $800) if I am to get that amp.
Instead, he suggested 500/1 with 10w3v2's saying that would make the process much easier and cheaper, and the system will still hit hard.
So my question to you guys is...

1. Is what the guy saying true? I need to change the alternator if I get a strong amp?
2. Will I be getting ripped off by buying the JL's? (which a lot of people seem to find over-rated and over-priced) If so, which system do you guys recommend? (I also liked Kicker S7's)

I am looking for a system that hits hard but also hits the notes even when it's on loud volume. Thanks for the help in advance~!

JL's are not over rated. They are a very hard hitting speaker and are quality made. Also, yes. If you wanna get a powerful JL amp you will need to change the puny stock alternator. I think you will be pleased with plan B. PLan A was better, but this is a great alternative. How much is all of this going to cost ya?

JLs are very good speakers. i dont know about changing the alternator for 1000 watts. dave (2loud2k2xd) is @ like 3000 watts and is talking about getting a beefed up one, but i think he said his is/will be 400 (i may be thinking off) but i dont think it was near 800. if youre worried about power, why not get a 2nd battery in the trunk to power the subs? i saw a guy who has 4 JLw7s (if i remember correctly. i believe that was the model) in the back of his cougar w/ something like 3 jl 500.1s or 2 500.1s and 1 300.1...whatever it was, it was as loud as, if not louder than daves car (sorry dave...it was!)...ive got pics somewhere. i think he said he had something like 1/4 or 1/3" of flex in the rear window from the subs. every night @ the meets he always had his system cranked up and if you put your head in thru the window, you could keep it in there for about 10 seconds and then your head starts rattling.

Well it's good to hear that JL's are not just over-rated. The money I was gong to spend on my new system was a bit over a grand. I am pretty certain that I can get a 1000/1 amp for around $500 and the two 10w7's with enclosure for also around $500~600. Installation and wiring would be another $200. However, if I am to get a new alternator to use the amp, then I would not get this setup.
Instead, I will have to settle for the 500/1 with maybe one 10w7 or two 10w3v2's.
Like I said, would u recommend me a different setup for this amount of money?

You must have some kind of hookup to be getting the jl stuff that cheap... that being said, it'd definitely make for a killer setup. check http://www.icixsound.com/vb/showthread.php?p=162874#post162874 for a recent very in-depth review of the w7 and several other top notch subs. if your deal for the jl stuff falls through, i've always liked the stuff from the guys over @ elemental designs ( www.elementaldesigns.com ). their stuff is top notch and manufacturer direct so you get the best possible prices and a great warranty to boot.

JL stuff is awesome, I'm also a fan of alpine stuff especially if you have a new alpine headunit (you can control the amp controls of the v12 model with the headunit). Install you could do yourself and save some money.

The main point with subs is that the max power (watts) of the amp should be close to the max power of the subs and the rms should be close but the amp can put out a higher rms. For a deeper bass I like 12" over the 10".

lol, you really dont need an alt upgrade with 1000watts. im pushing 3100 watts RMS with an 1125ca battery dedicated for the system. i also run a 3 farad cap. i need an alt bad. my roof flexes and my back door windows flex also. maimly because i did not dynamat the roof. flexing is bad. there should be no flexing whatsoever. i have NO rattles from my setup. you can barely hear it outside the car. but open the door and it will blow dry your hair. my set up hits in the 145dbl range with the 1 kicker SOLO X i have. really, the only other hyundai out there that can even come close to those numbers is djspinner02 and his boy that has an accent.
i think there is another thats hitting around 138 or something like that. but the numbers really sdepend on the spl meter used. my numbers and djspinner02, and his boy with the accent were all done on a term lab meter. im sure we can get even higher numbers on a cheaper meter, but term lab is the meter used at most major competitions.
also my setup is a DAILY set-up. djspinners and boys accent is SPL only. which means i can listen to mine all day at 90% full volume and its clear as day, no distortion. they howerver for daily use is not possible.
my sub alone weighs about 57lbs and retails for over $1100.00
the sub amp pushes out 2400 watts RMS and retails for over $1200.00
then there is the 20' of 0ga wire at 10.00 a foot. 6 pairs of rca cables at 180.00. the 1125ca batt is 225.00. the deck is 650.00. the dvd player is 600.00. 100sq yards dynamat 150.00. custom made box 70.00 for materials
the cap was 200.00. batt terminals were 25.00@. connectors, say about 30.00. man i can go on and on about my set-up. ive invested almost 8000.00 total in audio/video/and all the mods. oh, dont forget to add 1200.00 for 18's and rubber.

evan, next time im down there ill throw in a competition cd and see how long you can sit in my car before you get out:) lol

haha u dont understand how many times I have looked at your setup. I know you have one of the best audio systems on the forum. But I have a question, did you buy all your products from an authorized dealer or online (ebay)? Because I am most likely to purchase my products from ebay, aka cheap without warranty. Anyways, I dont intend to participate in any auto show. If anything, it would be competiting against my friends from school at a parking lot. I have checked out Kicker Solo X as well as the S7's (a bit more suitable for someone like me) but S7's started to miss the notes when it was cranked up to almost max volume. Do Solo X do the same?
On a side note, I read the in-depth review recommended by chaos GT and so many good things about the W7's. Since 2loud2k2xd vouches that I wouldn't need a new alternator, I am highly thinking of 1000/1 with two 10w7's or one 12w7. What you think?

eric, i doubt you'd need anything more than something your could buy at a local retailer like circuit city. my system gives me the bass i want and the projection i want. with my trunk open you can hear my system from across a parking lot or down the street. if that "1000/1" is the wattage of the amp, you shouldn't need a new alt., i run mine 1200/2 and my only extreme drains on my power are noticible (ei subs hit at max volume= headlights dim SLIGHTLY)

sidenote: 2loud2k2xd, your system must be so pimp.

yes it is pimp, thanks.
the reason you can hear you system across the parking lot is you have not sound proffed the car. with all the windows down, and the sunroof open, i still hit a 125spl. sealed up ill hit about a 145spl. thats crazy loud.
buy the stuff from ebay. be careful of shady sales tho. look at feedback rating.
i have a 5.25cu' vented box. when i compete i still have the clarity i do when daily driving. i can hit all the notes. i tweak the amp differently for comps. just above clipping...but thars another topic in itself (clipping).
any properly installed set-up will sound good. sound proffing is a must for clarity. and vibrations/flexing will sause you to loose precious spl, and it makes me laugh when i hear a bass car that rattles like tin cans in the trunk.
