I had my 2005 Hyundai Elantra inspected today. It passed the safety but failed the emission test. The inspector told me to replace the battery even though I dont find trouble in starting the engine at the first shot itself? He also told if I drive some 40 miles, it would be sometimes ok. The error message said "O2 sensor - Not Ready" and Evaporator - Not Ready" why is that so? If I charge the battery over night from Walmart and take for the inspection next day, will the car pass emission??

he is trying to do a readiness check...sounds like a communications error on his machine. if you do not have a CEL there is not anything wrong with it. ask him to graph the o2 sensors and you easily tell what they are doing and if they are in working order.

replacing the battery has absolutely NOTHING to do with it.

He is thinking that the battery is weak, and that the computer is losing it's memory overnight because the readiness codes aren't set. Take it to a Hyundai dealership. Your car should be under warranty.
