Tools for job:
10, 12, 14mm sockets/wrenches

Difficulty level: 2

Time for project: 1 hour

Removal:
1) Open hood
2) Gaze a engine with disgust
3) Disconnect battery!
4) Remove coolant overflow line (ensure the engine is cold when doing this)

5) Remove PS pump adjustment bolts
6) Move PS pump to the side.
7) Remove PS pump bracket (6 bolts total: 3 in triangle, 1 down and to the right and 2 on left side of bracket)

8) Now there is another bracket to loosen, you cant remove it unless you you remove the waterpump pulley and thats just a pain, so loosen the two bolts off as much as you can until that bracket swings to the left.

9) Go underneath car
10) Remove power wires from alternator (clip and bolt)

11) Remove nut from alternator, then push long swivel bolt out.

12) Now push on alternator until it comes off bracket.
13) Go back up top and try to wrangle alternator out.

Install is just opposite of removal though when installing alternator make sure its totally bolted down with belt tension set before going on to PS pump.

Install points to consider:
A) Put swivel bolt through new alternator with the nut on the end.
B) Seat alternator back on to lower swing bracket and push in as far as possible, it will be very tight so dont give up.
C) Once its in as far as you can manage swivel alternator up and place the tension adjustment bolts in so that the alternator swings for up and down adjustment. If you push the alternator all the way down at this point the lower bracket will seat itself all the way in.

D) Now carry on with PS bracket and pump installation and adjustment.

Many Thanks... nice to have the voice of experience on this kind of thing :)

And of course, it goes without saying that the battery is disconnected for this procedure.

hello
thanks for this, i had to modify this because of the top 3 bolts was rusted and the lack of good tools. to avoid removing the PS bracket, i removed the radiator leaving the lower hose connected so i did not have to drain it this gave me the room i needed to lift the alternator get it out. as for that pesky pin, i had to remove it through the wheel well, its actually simple only 2 small bolts to remove the mud flap and there is the bolt.

thanks again

Ok James hope that helped...Im sure if you had a stock manifold it could come out the bottom, but with the header in the way, actually there was still all kinds of room I just couldnt get the alternator out. So I figured this is the easiest way seeing as most can access everything under the hood easily enough.

Hello, I'm a total newbie to the site. I've owned the car now for about 3 years and have had to put 3 alternators in it and two batteries! :( I think part of the problem is that the alternator appears to just be hanging there exposed directly to the road and is maybe getting wet and sprayed with salt. I see you mention there is a guard that protects the alternator. I think I should buy this. I know if I go into a dealer they will have no clue what I'm talking about. Do you have a Hyundai part number? Thanks!!

I did mine from the bottom, just looten the belt off of the alternator, remove two screws holding the plastic "wall" between the alternator and the wheel well. Unplug and unbolt the alternator and remove through the wheel well.
Looks good though.

This is a necessary step and if the fan is removed there is no need to remove the P/S pump or bracket. The alternator will come out from the top if you gently rotate it past the oil dipstick tube. Have done it this way many times. Also, removing the radiator overflow bottle by just lifting it off the bracket will give you a bit more room to bring the alternator out from the top.

it is easier to just remove the fan and oil filter to drop it out the bottom than to remove the p/s pump. but if you can't get under your car then removing the p/s pump is your best bet.

I was trying to replace the alternator belt. I loosened the alternator bolts (1 adjusting, 1 on the slot). The slot bolt accidently came out. Now I am trying to tighten the bolts back to the alternator housing. I struggled for two hours, but I can't tighten the slot bolt because it won't go in through the slot. The nut hole may be misaligned, but there is no way I can adjust. The slot bolt goes through a hole in the adjusting bolt retainer. How can I tighten the alternator slot bolt?
