    Its a belt.

    CHANGE IT ASAP

EDIT: Forgot to add, we have interfering engines, meaning that if your belt breaks, then big chances that a piston will touch a valve and **** it up.

There is a timing belt that is run from the crank to one of the cam shaft pulleys.
Under the valve cover there is a chain that drives one camshaft with the other.

Yeah but some cars do have a timing chain instead of a belt

Which is why he asked. Those usually require no maintenance.

Actually, on the Beta's, and especially the 1.8 beta the chain and guides would wear and need replaced with age. They would chatter and rattle. But the belt was needed to be changed at 60k miles. You're past due for your second belt.

both...the belt needs to be replaced at 60,000 and the chain should be checked periodically too

Question Re: Timing Belt?? Timing Chain??

O.k. I have a 2.0 beta (01GLS) and I just passed 74500(20,000+ in 6 months) how much is it to get it changed(both dealership and self) and is it part of the 60000 check?

No, it's not normally part of 60,000 mile service (although how the services are packaged is up to the dealer).

DIY: less than $150 USD (with waterpump)

    Dealer: $300-400 USD.

While it is not a real complicated DIY, it does take time and must be done absolutly correct, or you can destroy your engine.

The hyundai dealer i worked at was seeing 03-04 xd's with 65,000 mi on them and the belts were breaking left and right. But iam in AZ so that might be why, very dry area. Also They were charging like four hours labor and I was doing them start to finish with tensioner in about a half hour.
