    Default Rocks and A/C

Like on the XD, The HD also is prone to getting rocks through the lower grille area and puncturing the condenser. Unfortunately, my car needs one. Cost is about 416 for the part plus another 150 to install and charge the system.

It will be fixed soon. A/C condenser is about $416 so that isn't that high. I thought it would be over 800 just for the part.

No warranty on this item, but my insurance should cover it. At the same time, I got a few chips in the bumper and a ding in the grille. Tomorrow AM I'm going to get it looked at by an adjuster. Hopefully they will cover the A/C unit and rock chips at the same time. Since the A/C was punctured, that is the reason why I'm planning that route. A/C work is generally pricey.

Too bad the condenser is new. I could have gone to a bone yard to find one.

Planned on it. But the condenser is not exactly cheap. Since it was damaged and I got a few rock chips in the process, why not kill 2-3 birds with 1 stone. This way, I could get my car painted my way plus get the A/C fixed.

I can get the condenser online for $330.00.

Just a thought, I spent $15 on 1/4"x18"x36" mesh grill (very strong, like bbq grill in dimond pattern) painted it black and followed the DIY, I havent got a dent in my condenser since. People might think its ricy, I think its functional, and with it being black you can barley see it anyway.

That truly sucks, how old is your car? Not even four months old right? How about dreaming up a rock deflector of some kind and writing up a DIY? Come to think of it, I'm on it already! A little expanded metal screen in front of the condenser should do the trick, maybe with a small extension piece bent at a 90 degree angle parallel to the road to catch any ricochets.....

actually colin, i would wonder why Hyundai didnt plan on this in their designs. they know that almost all of their cars run this risk, yet it seems that they dont care. this problem alone could drive away dozens of people a day if they knew about this flaw

I told the dealer about this.. They know I am going to fix it myself. I asked a radiator shop if it is repairable and they said yes. I'd rather spend $50 for a simple plug/repair rather than spending $415 for a replacement.

I bought it Oct 30th, 2006. 6 months old. I'm going to get it repaired at a radiator shop (it is repairable) rather than replaced and design a mesh screen from Home Depot to put behind the black grill. I might do that for the upper grill too.

Insurance is paying for it. They estimated the total damage at $1,639.00 which includes rock chips on the bumper. White urethane paint is cheap. For a gallon, at my cost is $75 a gallon. Clear is $80.00 a gallon. I already have that the primer and the catalyst ($35.00) so as soon as the condenser is removed, the car will get my kind of paint job.

For a complete paint job, and condenser repair, the cost to me is $355.00.

I found the piece I was talking about at Ace "true value". It was an expanded metal, dimaond pattern, HEAVY duty. It was for making your own brick BBQ I think. It took a big pair of wire cutters to get thru it to cut it to shape. I couldn't bend it by hand, not enough to fold it anyway. Then I just followed the DIY, and it has worked great, I just zip tied it to the vertical supports, it fits really snug in between the foam and bumber so I figured no extra holes were neccessary. I didnt bother with behind the fogs cause there is nothing to protect, and after I painted it black, it is nearly invisible. Cost was $20 including the paint!
