Looks to me like they're trying to get out on top while they still can. There's been many talks about lawsuits regarding their disgustingly high profits from spiking gas prices.

    gas here is momentarily:

    1.60 euro for 1 liter

    1.60 euro = 2,47 dollar
    1 gallon = 3.79 liter

    3.97 liter x 1.60 euro = 6.06 euro

    1 gallon = 6.06 euro
    6.06 euro = 9.36 dollar

    conclusion:

we pay 9.36 dollars for 1 gallon of gas.

I never once complained. I know fully well that we have some of the cheapest gas in the world. complaining gets us nowhere, and it won't magically lower the gas prices.

Unfortunately, not all people realize this and still complain, because it's what they're best at.

But, this doesn't have anything to do with what I said. I was talking about Exxon and their record making profits, not what we pay for gas.

You [europe] pay so much for fuel because your taxes on it are so high. The base price of fuel in U.S. and Europe is about the same, but your government taxes the **** out of it.

Make no mistake: the price of the raw gas is about the same as the U.S., but Europe taxes gasoline at a higher rate. At the moment, taxes in France make up about 70 percent of the pump price. For comparison, the U.S. federal gasoline tax of of 2005 was 18.4 cents per gallon, with each State adding between 10 and 33 cents of tax, according to Widipedia. That makes the maximum gasoline tax rate 17% in the U.S.

Exxon-Mobil is selling gas stations since it's more profitable to sell gas to the gas station than it is to sell gas to the consumer. If gas station owners were making a killing off of selling Sprite, Doritos, and cigarettes, they might be more apt to keeping the stations.

The gas station is the least profitable aspect of the oil business. Exxon-Mobil makes their money from drilling and exploration. That's why they are selling them off.

I'm really loving these high prices...everyone is starting to feel it ~$4.00 for regular around here. I love seeing guys in trucks and SUV's blazing past me on the interstate, and imagine them complaining about gas prices when they go home.

I think that gas would have to be about double what it is now for it to really have any more of an effect on me. I'm pretty thrifty on my consumption.

Agreed. Gas prices aren't hurting me too much because I don't drive that far. Plus now I'm getting 82mpg on my errand-runner. . Now if the neverending cycle of thunderstorms would stop, I could take more advantage of it.

Back when Exxon and Mobil merged there was pretty much only Exxon and Mobil gas stations in the area. In the last 5-7 years many of them became Sunocos. For some reason I feel better about going to a Sunoco rather than an Exxon-Mobil station.

As for the profits, more power to them. That's the plan in life: get money.
