    Default Sound deadening thread

Ok so i've been putting sound deadner in the XD and just wanted to post some pics of the progress, im currently using several products.
Second Skin Damplifier <38sq ft so far>
    Foil Tape
    Butyl Backed Foil Tape
Second Skin Spectrum Liquid Deadener <30sq ft so far>
1/8" thick Frost King Duct Insulation
    1/4" thick foam weatherstripping
    (3.5 yr old) eDead v1 <3sq ft>

I still have a whole lot to do and am waiting for a new shipment of damplifier to come in so i can do the headliner and the back doors and other misc. areas.

hmm... those doors look kinda... crappy... but then again... ive never done this... so i cant really comment..

however... ive been told that it is best to cover up as many of the holes in the door as possible, for best results... instead of just covering the metal.

hope mine doesnt turn out like this... :/

Your trunk has a liner. Was that Standard. My Gt is all open an Ugly. IT would look sweet with a liner.

Actually, I think I've seen a pic somewhere of an elantra with a trunk lid lining somewhere. The cheap cardboard/carpet type, but I'm pretty sure about that. I'm sure he's gonna cover the holes at some point with something to prevent water intrusion, and as far as it looking crappy, who cares? It's behind the door panel, if it works, cool. I think he's doing just fine, seems to be one of the more knowledgeable people on the board when it comes to stereo stuff.

damn, pete just blasted me ,but its cool
well for one it isn't done these are progress pics, also i have galvanized sheet metal for the holes but unlike MOST cars the door skin of the elantra is designed in a way that doesn't let the material just lay flat so it has to be cut in sections and placed at angles. It also doesn't matter what it looks like too much because its under the door panel but it can't be set certain ways or the door panel won't go back on. but i'm not gonna cover it up too much because I will need access to that area for my future plans w/ the car when I get the body work/paint next year. (or if someone tries to break in and busts out my window i can replace myself semi-easily)

I could have taken the outer skin off but I did that on my other elantra and when the bolts are removed the window glass slides off track and its a PAIN to get seated correctly. The trunk was lined w/ damplifier and then covered in liquid deadener. I'll post more pics again soon.

haha, you should see mine. its very time consuming to do and making it "look good" is rarely a priority. as long as its there and sticks well, itll do the job.

as far as filling the holes, yea you really should do that. It basically puts your door speakers in their own enclosure, helps with bass response a lot. I use wire mesh held in place with liquid nails. its easy enough to remove if necessary later, and holds up well.

i watched a how-to video from crutchfield on installing this stuff... n they said to trade the cuts and shape of the plastic liner that u have to take off, into the sound proofing material... and stick it on that way, keeping it as much in 1 piece as possible.

but obviously... our doors r diff than the ones in the video... so the process is different, and i understand.

thats nice noisewater, is that fatmat or raamat? and like tommy said I could make it nice like noisewater but for the cost of second skin it wasn't worth it to me because I still have to put $$ elsewhere, and im going to use the butyl tape and sheet metal to cover the holes then go over it w/ more damplifier. i left spaces in between because I was going to use plexiglass and sheetmetal screws but I found the tape cheap and I already had some galvanized steel

yeah, you should have a good amount but certain areas in your trunk you may want double layered. You might use around 40sqft in the trunk if you do it better than mine. oh, i also forgot to add that im gonna be putting closed cell foam in the inner door too, i have some coming but im not to sure if its truly mold/water resistant, i may just buy some luxury liner pro and use the closed cell under and inside the back seat.

i plan on doing ATLEAST 2 layers in the entire trunk.

the doors will get 2 layers also, 1 on the inside skin, and 1 on the outside.

well be ready to grab another roll, once you have all those panels off and start laying material you notice other areas that you could stick it, then pretty soon your layering deadener everywhere

cb, you need/should cover all the inside door (yes, behind the glass, and safety bar in the door). once all that is done, then work the outer door (where the door panel goes. all exposed metal should be covered. this is easier when using the paint-on sound deadener. do all the doors like this. also do the ear seating side panels.

the trunk and side walls look great. nice large pieces, and it looks like you went over it with the pain-on sound deaderen. A++++. make sure you do the same for the trunk lid.

i wouldnt do anything with the carpet/floor area. the carpet and foam backing will provide enought of a deadener.

    roof:
remove headliner and do the entire roof the same way as you did the trunk area.

good luck man. it took me 18 hrs of back wrenching work. id charge you 1000.00 to ever do it again. thats how much id rather not ever tackle that job again.

I don't know if it is a brand or not, but it is Butyl Rubber and foil, not asphalt, and it is thick. It is some OEM stuff I got at work a while ago. I also plan of layering the trunk, and lid.
