Ok so i've been putting sound deadner in the XD and just wanted to post some pics of the progress, im currently using several products.
Second Skin Damplifier <38sq ft so far>
Foil Tape
Butyl Backed Foil Tape
Second Skin Spectrum Liquid Deadener <30sq ft so far>
1/8" thick Frost King Duct Insulation
1/4" thick foam weatherstripping
(3.5 yr old) eDead v1 <3sq ft>
I still have a whole lot to do and am waiting for a new shipment of damplifier to come in so i can do the headliner and the back doors and other misc. areas.
Cornbread is right, but it's not just bass, the clarity or your rear deck 6x9s will benefit too. When I had just "proofed" my rear deck lid, I drove around and listened to various types of music, and I was very impressed with the improvement. Now I have finished my whole trunk, and I am blown away yet again, it just keeps getting better and better.
Also when you go to sell your car, and they go for a test drive, and it's quiet inside the cabin, it might net you a reasonable resale value.
too bad they don't make pre-cut sheets of that stuff for our cars so someone like me with the patience of a 2yo and the motivation of a DMV worker, just pull off the backing and stick it on. One of you guys with more experience should buy some big a** sheets of this stuff cut out all the holes and shapes needed for the main parts like the doors, trunk...etc. and sell it to me for a small fee.:kick:
That stuff is too flexible and sensitive to heat to precut. itd be a mess by the time it made it to your door. That and generally you need to cut it into strips and patches to get it all to sit right, and you couldnt put a precut large piece on the inner door skins.
eDead is good stuff, they've always got it at that price on their website, i posted the ebay link because their website says their still on backorder, youll need to email them before ordering it through there just to make sure.
Im a big fan of Elemental Designs. Great products at a great price, unfortunately theyve been moving slightly away from car audio and doing more H/T stuff, but what they still sell for car audio is good stuff.
I am outside working on sound proofing the passenger compartment of the car, and good grief is it hot, I am sweating up a storm. I got the rear seat out, and the deck fascia was a pain in the butt, because I forgot how I got the third brake light out when I put in the speakers.
The deck lid is really going to be a pain, because of all the little uneven places you have to cover.
Here are some pictures of the progress, I am heading back out to get to it again.
Here is the after.
I just finished up the installation and man I am heat exausted, cut to shreds and tired as all get out. I got so exausted that I started skipping steps, and made a few mistakes. I forgot to put the middle seat belt back in place before bolting the seat down and I forgot to mark the holes for the bolts, and I had to scrape up the deadener to find the holes; I am such a fool. The good news is I had just enough to finish all the way under the seat.
well this sucks, the box is insane and now I need to put in more deadener, I finally see how the sub is supposed to sound and it's ridiculous. I have to adjust the gains and stuff more but I definatley can't turn it up because it pushes too much air for me to really concentrate on driving (maybe because i'm not a bass head). The initial layering of deadner holds ALOT of sound inside the car but the sub box is closer to the lid by about 8 inches so I need to do some more "reinforcing"
thanks, and yeah its "painted" w/ the liquid deadner (pics on the 1st page) there is a layer of foil deadner under it too. I have to do something about the roof flex though(other than turn the bass down)
thread revival!!, i'm replacing my infinity kappa's that i've had for 7 years, i think they'll be here Saturday and i'll be adding some additional deadener to the door. I was gonna get a set of rk6's but i didnt think they'd fit so i went another route
what are you replacing them with? another set of kappas? should have gone with the RK6's, hearing great things about them, thinking about them myself actually.
A set of Image Dynamics CTX65CS, I got them at a great price ($119 bnib shipped)but I could've gotten the RK6's at an insane price also but when I saw that you needed 3"s I kinda got discouraged when I pulled out the measuring tape and I think there would be an issue with the window touching the magnet, and the fact that mdf rings are required, i'd have to mod the door panel and then there's no telling if they'd fit still. The guy I bought them from said that most people end up selling them because they can't get the fitment (I'm probably have more ingenuity than wal-mart installers but you can't make it work all the time). I can get you in contact with the seller Tommy if you want to try the Massives.
and freebird, i've not heard of audiotechnix but I haven't done any work on car audio in over a year but that stuff seems like a good price, however you do need to layer products on top of each other to get the best results so that stuff would work as a solid base to apply everything else to.
Yea, 3" is a lot. My woofers are about 2.5, not sure how much it would take to get another half inch. I made a thick mdf mounting ring, and then trimmed off the ridges on the door panel to make it fit under the panel.
Lemme know how the CTX's are. Need some new equipment myself, and who doesnt love ID?
Ok i got them today and I can't mount them because they touch the window but Im gonna use 1/4" board to make a spacer and it should work for me, they sound alot cleaner than my infinitiy speakers just wired outside the door. I do think that the Deflex Pads that I have behind my door panel will actually be of some use now because before they cleaned up the sloppy echo in the door but the old crossover wasn't as wide of a range as the new one is so I should really get my money's worth.
I also laid another layer of liquid deadener and taped a few seams on the door panel I might post a pic tomorrow or whenever I get the ID's in
