I don't think anyone's ever said old cars are safer. They're death traps. So many people died in the 50's and 60's from car accidents. That's one of the things that got legislation going to require seatbelts and safer vehicles in general. I"m pretty sure the guy in the Malibu would survive, be a little banged up though.

Why do that to a nice '59? Did we really need to destroy a nice, vintage car to know new cars are safer?

I like the how Bel Air's windshield detaches itself and just goes flying off.

In the '80's, older cars were safer. '80's cars were built with mostly '50's safety technology but were much lighter. The '80's are when the whole "old cars are safer" thing started. Unfortunately, some peoples still believe it. Newer cars weigh the same or more than the large '50's boats and have all kinds of new technology, including airbags, better crush zones, stronger doors, and stronger materials.

better it go flying off than what used to happen a lot with laminated glass before seatbelts. I had a teach once, old lady, was a nurse in the early 60's. She said before seat belts, a lot of times people got decapitated in car wrecks when their heads would fly into the windshield and get stuck in the glass.

sacrifices have to be made when doing research.

When I die, I want to die like my grandfather–who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car.

Unlike todays cars where the windshield is glued in, the windshields of older cars were just held in with a rubber gasket, similar to the rear quarter windows in cars today.

What "research"? Like I said, what did we learn from this? That a brand new car is safer than a 50 year old car that has suffered 50 years of weathering and probably has a rust-compromised frame? Well, DUH! Who didn't know that? I wonder how a less rusty '59 would have done.

    Here's the car they used:

It's just an old car. It's like crashing a 1998 Elantra in 2041. Nobody really cares. You are just pretending to care.

exactly.. One reason why hot rodders box frames, use sub-frame connectors, etc.

The glass is glued in to provide extra rigidity to the "cage". I doubt they had butyl (sp?) type adhesives back in those days.

I'd still take the 59. Those are sweet looking cars imo. I think its crazy what happened to the door upon impact on the bel air.

If i filled my gas tank with half Shell with V-Power, and the other half with Chevron with Techron gas...does that mean that my gas is V-TEC?
