    Default Speaker Upgrade Suggestions

    Hey all,
I've got an '06 GT with the stock speakers.
I've had this head unit for quite a while: Sony CDX-GT520

All I'm looking for is a performance boost that wouldn't require a separate sub or amp (unless I really need the amp). One of the reasons I got this car was because of the utility of the hatch and cargo space. So I don't want to waste it by putting in a huge sub.

Not looking to spend a ton of money on anything too fancy, but some extra punch in the bass would be nice. Any suggestions?

Nice head unit, i don't see why the head unit enough isn't enough for your needs, when i installed my head unit, it was waaaay better than the stock, but if you truly want some bass, with out sacrificing space, then just go with one 12 or one ten inch sub, with like a 500 watt amp.... You should be able to find a deal in the "penny saver" for not more than 120 dollars!!

If you want cleaner sound with no subs, i would install a 4 channel amp, its a huge difference. any small 4channel 200watt watt amp should be enough.

also for speakers i would recomend some Polk audio front and rear speakers, thats what i got and they sound very clean and have good bass.
I got all 4 speakers on ebay for under $200

to get any kind of bass you will not want to use a HU and you will need an amp.

the eclipse amp i have pushes 85 x 4 at 4ohms at less then .0001 thd ...something liket his is what you want.

speakers....hate to say it but you get what you pay for....i bought my diamond audio HEX series off ebay for 400 bucks....hands down the best set of speakers i have owned.

others would be mb quart, but your going to need to spend if you dont want to use a subwoofer.

So really, if I want to keep my cargo space, any sort of upgrade is out of the question, since I would either need a sub, or I would need to mount an amp (which would also reduce cargo space.)

For about $100 you could add a Bazooka Tube, or equivalent (infinity, etc). The amp and sub are integrated into one unit, with a simple molex connector. If you need to unplug it, unhook one connector and you can move it or take it out. I have 2 8" tubes in my trunk, and they've done all I needed for adding just a bit of low end. You're not going to be heard coming around the block, but it will put a little more bump in your music.

I've had orion's CO652 before, hooked up to a series 2, 4 way rockford amp, and it sounded sweeeeeet. No need for subs with good speakers. Some cars even come with a built in-door enclosure.. i don'T know about the GT, but the GL didn't have any.

You sure want the lowest thd % possible, but the .0001 thd is tested with a stable power source, without any distortion, seperated wires, so you are never going to get that much quality.

Yeah...those might work. Not looking to rattle the back windows and disturb the neighborhood. But I've driven the company cars at work ('08 Impalas) and their stock sound system sounds pretty good to my ears. If the stock Chevy sounds good without fancy amps and subwoofers, there's gotta be an easy way to upgrade my car.

What about the Kenwood deck & speakers that came as an option in the elantra? Does anyone have that and do they sound decent compared to stock?

Don't know about the Chevy you were in, but a lot of "stock" systems have amplifiers. You can always mount an amp under the seat if you want to conserve the hatch room. That's where most come OEM anyway.

My jetta is a pre-monsoon, and doesn't have the amplifier under the deck, but it sound better than the actual monsoons. i missing a little bit of power at really high levels, but it's not worth upgrading to an amp'ed system since i'll max out the drivers.
I really wish i lived closer, you could actually hear what i'm talking about.

    But to get back on the subject;

IIRC, the gls/gt have components drivers stock right? my gl was actually a 2-way. So does the gls/gt have an actual crossover? or it's the radio that acts as a crossover?

For the OEM components in the doors, it's not a crossover in the radio. My GLS had all the wiring and I just bought and plugged in the OEM tweeters (have aftermarket stereo). I'm not sure if there is a crossover/bass-blocker in the wiring, or if it was on the tweeter itself.

The GT's have a little inline capacitor/filter that goes to the tweeter, not a crossover.

If you just want a cheap upgrade without loosing any space, just look for a set of ~$100ish coaxial speakers for the front doors, and a decent set of 6x9's for the rear. Even on deck power they're going to have better sound/bass than the stock sets. Been a while since Ive looked at regular speakers, but I seem to remember pioneer speakers making some decent bass on low power. You'll loose the factory tweeter position with this solution, but i doubt youll miss it.

If you want to spend a little money, Im going to give you the same solution I did for Ugzz and Pete.

Those are literally the best speakers I have ever heard from a major brand for less than $200. Ive installed 3 sets myself, and recommended to a number of people, and everyone has been very please with them Run those in the front, and whatever you feel like in the back, and I think youll be very happy without loosing much room at all.

He has a hatch, they do not use 6x9 rear speakers. I think they are 6.5" round speakers in the back - not sure, I have a sedan.

to save on space you can get a slim style truck box. I have this one with a 300 watt sony amp in my accent hatch right now. It doesn't take up a lot of room and if you mount the amp to the rear of the box with some quick disconnects for the wiring you can pull it out if you know you are going to need to fold down the seat or fit anything large in the truck area.

$59 bucks for the whole speaker set huh? Two questions:
    1. Would I need to run new wiring out to the door? I had to run small cables out to the door for my LED side mirror signals and that was a HUGE pain in the ***.
    2. Would I need the amp for those? I'm assuming that's why you included the second link.

In regards to car audio, the most I've ever done is swap out my deck (many times in all three cars I've owned). I've never installed aftermarket speakers & amps or run cable. So I appreciate all the replies to this.

to run and amp you will have to run (depeding on the amperage) wire through the firewall...there is a grommet in the middle of the firewall thats where everybody goes in.

to be honest i used the oem harhness through the door...i just found the wires spliced in my wire from the amp and then cut the end of the connector off and hooked up the speaker up that way...the oem wire is a little restrictive but only 85 watts i really didnt worry about it.

hooking up and amp is really easy....power, ground, remote (usually a blue wire from the HU) and your RCA's from the HU. then your wires going out the speakers...the hard part is nailing down the gains...but if you have an ear and dont get too aggressive you can get it right.

You could spice into the factory wiring, but i wouldnt.

You would definitely need an amp for those. They're power hungry.

Wiring car audio seems daunting, but really, its very simple.

I can handle the wiring...it's just a pain to tear everything apart and figuring out where to run everything for a clean install. Especially in the cold weather. This will probably have to be a summer project. Along with adding the dreamka4u heated seat kit....
